SACRAMENTAL LIFE AT ST. PAUL

BAPTISM: Baptisms in English are celebrated every 2nd Saturday of the month at 1:00pm and 2nd Sunday during Mass at 9:30 and 11:30am. Baptisms in Spanish are celebrated every 4th Saturday of the month at 1:00pm and 4th Sunday at 1:00pm (Spanish Mass). Parents and Godparents are required to attend one Baptismal Preparation Class, if Godparents are not registered parishioners in St. Paul Church, they must bring a sponsor Letter from their parish. First requirement is that the parents must bring an original birth certificate when meeting with the pastor or deacon to schedule a Baptism. For more information, please look in the website at www.stpaulcnj.org

RECONCILIATION: The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated every Saturday from 4:15pm to 5:00pm in the Church. Personal appointments may be made by contacting the parish office.

MARRIAGE: The Sacrament of Matrimony is celebrated Wednesday to Friday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, Saturday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm and Sunday from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. We must be contacted one year prior to the date of the wedding. In your initial meeting with the pastor or deacon, couples must bring the following documents: updated Baptismal, First Communion, and Confirmation certificate. SACRAMENT OF THE SICK: The sacrament of the sick is celebrated during the 5:30pm Mass on Saturday. If you wish to be anointed during the 5:30pm Mass, or if you prefer other arrangements, please contact the parish office. In cases of illness, please notify us if you or a family member would like to receive Holy Communion at home. The pastor visits the sick twice a month. Please notify the Parish Office at 973-340-1300.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: The Religious Education Program provides religious formation and sacramental preparation for children of our parish in Grades 1 through 11. For more information contact our Parish Office.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION (RCIA) FOR ADULTS: A process of Liturgical and Spiritual formation for those seeking to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. For more information contact our Parish Office.

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky

waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

God tells Ezekiel that he has been appointed “sentinel for the house of Israel” ((v.7). It is his task to “warn the wicked”(v.8) in God’s name. As a prophet of judgment Ezekiel is called to speak words of warning to a people who have strayed from God. This warning might lead them to repentance. Many of Israel’s prophets “afflicted the comfortable” and so met persecution at the hands of their own people. Legend says Ezekiel was killed by his own people. As a prophet living in Babylon he preached to his fellow exiles of God’s disapproval of their behavior.

In today’s text, part of a section that promises hope for the repentant sinner, God calls the prophet to speak his words of warning, allowing for the possibility of repentance and reconciliation. Paul reminds us today that our task as Christians is to “love one another” (v.8). This is “the fulfillment of the law,” (v.10) he says. We are called to be concerned with the welfare of our neighbor and sometimes this means it is our task to speak prophetically as Ezekiel did, afflicting the comfortable. In today’s gospel Jesus give advice concerning dealing with those who sin against us. As the good shepherd goes after the lost sheep, so we too should seek to bring them back. He is not talking about correcting strangers, but “your brother” (v.15), in other words another disciple. This instruction is addressed to the members of the church. In fact today’s text is only one of two in which the word “church” is found on Jesus’ lips. In a text connected to the commissioning of Peter (cf. 16:13 ff.) Jesus tells the disciples, “whatever you (plural) bind on earth will be bound in heaven” (v.18). In the earlier text he gave Peter alone the authority to bind and loose. They are given the authority to forgive and to withhold forgiveness. For Reflection: Why should fraternal correction be a part of the Christian lifestyle? The Rosary Society will open its 2017-2018

season with a meeting on Monday, Sept. 11, 2017 at 1:00pm in the parish hall. We cordially extend an invitation to the women of St. Paul’s parish who have yet to join the Rosary Society as well as to women in our surrounding communities – come be part of a life-long sisterhood devoted to our Blessed Mother and to a mission of benevolence to those in need. All are welcome and we urge you to take the opportunity to join this wonderful ministry of St. Paul’s church. Our numbers are diminishing and we need members to keep this vital ministry strong and active. The new slate of officers will be installed by Father Leonardo at the opening meeting. They are Louise Moccia, President, Dale Ferment, Vice President, Patricia Csatlos, Treasurer and Rosilyn Struller, Recording Secretary. The Rosary Society meets the first Monday after the first Sunday of each month. A brief business meeting is conducted, a planned program or presentation is made followed by light refreshments. Throughout the year we have other events and programs, luncheons and a major annual Fish-N-Chips/Tricky Tray fundraiser. SPIRITUALITY OF STEWARDSHIP

Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus. It is a way of thanking God for all the blessings He has given us by returning to Him a portion of time, talent and treasure. Stewardship can change the spiritual lives of both individuals and the parish as a whole.

Living as a Christian Steward—Time: Giving of time for Christian stewards include time spent in prayer and worship, in sharing our love with family and friends, and in volunteering for Church and community activities that help others and promote justice. Talent: We share our talents by using the unique gifts God has given us to praise the Lord, spread the Gospel message, and help those less fortunate. Treasure: We give our treasure unconditionally, (without any expectation in return), in proportion to our giftedness, and as an expression of thanksgiving. ¿Qué significa ser un buen Administrador Cristiano? Un administrador Cristiano es un discípulo que vive en gratitud al reconocer y aceptar los dones que ha recibido de Dios y los comparte por amor a Él con su prójimo. What does it mean to be a good steward?

The Christian steward is a disciple who lives in gratitude by recognizing and embracing God’s gifts and sharing them in love of God and of one’s neighbor. Stewards who are disciples of Jesus live in thankfulness because we recognize that first we have been given the gift of redemption in Jesus, a gift we do not earn or deserve. Jesus freely offers that gift from His great love for us. Stewards recognize that what we have does not absolutely belong to us in the strict sense. Rather it is entrusted to us to be cultivated so that it grows for the greater honor of God. Therefore, our fundamental posture is openness to receive from God and the resolve to share what we have in love of neighbor so that others come to respond more fully to the saving love of God.

SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR THE VICTIMS OF HURRICANE HARVEY

Our Parish of St. Paul will have a second collection at all the Masses during the weekend of September 30th and October 1st. The devastation caused in the Texas/Louisiana region by Hurricane Harvey is staggering. It will take months and even years for people to recover from the storm. The funds raised will help those victims. Let us be generous with those in need.
