News & Notes
February 2019
In January 1997 I attended my first Youth Quake. Since then, I have lost count of how many youth events I have attended. I’ve been to different venues and different states. I’ve attended in various roles and capacities. I’ve learned that each organization that puts these events together uses different models. But there is something common to these events. That is the “mountain top” feeling that comes from attending.
It’s a time away (usually a weekend) where you are surrounded by hundreds (or in the case of a national trip, thousands) of youth that are all gathered in the same place to have some sort of encounter with God and to grow in faith.
Today, I write this following Road trip, our Synod’s High School event in Ocean City. There were a few hundred youth gathered together to sing, dance, learn, pray and grow together. This year, it was even more special to see one of our own, Carla Heyser, on stage with the Lutheran Youth Organization leading the music for the weekend! True to form, this morning, following the event, I woke up singing the songs we heard!
To be honest, I don’t always remember the themes of the events, or everything the speakers say, but I remember the feeling. The feeling of spiritual rejuvenation, of exhaustion mixed with excitement, of having come from a place where I could be my-self, dance like no one was watching and embrace my faith in a way that wasn’t as easy at school and most importantly, being happy.
As time has passed on, and I’ve attended so many events, its been really neat to watch as people who attended as youth (some of them when I was their youth lead-er) have taken on leadership roles in their young adult lives. In the case of Road trip, some of my colleagues who are instrumental in putting the event together are people I remember attending the event with when we were all High School students!
Sometimes we may ask, why do we do this? My answer to that question is this:
I loved these trips when I was a youth. They were instrumental in helping me discern a call to ministry. Because of that, I want to give others the opportunity to have that experience.
Even if all that is remembered is a feeling of closeness with God, there were seeds planted within the participants. We never know what those seeds will grow in-to, but they are important! Yes, involvement in the local congregation is also im-portant in this “seed planting,” but God speaks to us each in different ways, so to of-fer different experiences increases the opportunity for God to speak in various ways!
Here at St. Paul’s we are truly blessed with a wonderful group of youth! When we go on these trips, I am reminded of just how wonderful our group is and how blessed we are here!
Our congregation is very generous in your support of the youth program, and we are thankful for that support! Please continue to embrace the excitement our young people have for going to events which are great opportunities for group build-ing and faith formation!
Peace,
Pastor Carolyn

February 2019
On a monthly basis we
have meetings of the Men’s
Lutheran Brotherhood
here at St. Paul’s. For one
morning a month the men of
the congregation gather togeth-
er to have a warm breakfast
prepared by one of our mem-
bers, a time of great fellowship,
and a meeting where we all
ponder how we can serve the
ministry of St. Paul’s better. It
is a great time, and I highly
recommend that you stop
by if you have not ever
had the opportunity to do
so. It has actually become one
of the highlights of the month
for me, and I personal view it
as a time to take a break from
fatherhood, be here at the
church with other guys, and ask
how Christ is stirring in my life,
and in the lives of other men
who gather around this table
from all walks of life, various
ages, and generations. It is a
time for me to admire those
who have put so much into
building the ministry here at St.
Paul’s through the years, and
still have the same commit-
ment to see the ministry
through today. It is also a time
for me to see new men who
have come into the congrega-
tion and see this brotherhood
as a way of living out their
Christian faith through acts of
service. I again, invite any
man who is looking for
Christian brotherhood to
attend these meetings on
the second Saturdays of
each month at 8:00AM in
the parish hall.
Recently, I have been
offering a small devotion to
close our meetings together. At
our first meeting of 2019, I of-
fered a prayer that has enlight-
ened my life, and I wish to
share this with you today. It is a
prayer of reflection, a prayer of
commitment. It is a covenant to
remind us of our commitment
to being faithful followers of
Christ. I hope that this will
serve as a reminder of your
own personal commitment to
Christ as this year of 2019 is
still in its infancy.
Best and Blessings,
Pastor Dave
A Covenant Prayer (Traditional)
I am no longer my own, but thine.
Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed by thee or laid aside by
thee. Exalted for thee or
brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me
be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious
and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit, thou art mine, and I am
thine. So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on
earth, Let it be ratified in
heaven. Amen.
“I am no longer my
own, but yours.
Put me to what you
will, place me with
whom you will.”

(Contemporary)
Covenant Prayer
(Contemporary Version)
I am no longer my own, but yours.
Put me to what you will, place me with whom you will.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be put to work for you or set aside for you,
Praised for you or criticized for you.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and fully surrender all things to your glory and ser-
vice. And now, O wonderful and
holy God, Creator, Redeemer, and Sus-
tainer, you are mine, and I am yours.
So be it. And the covenant which I
have made on earth, Let it also be made in heav-
en. Amen.

President's Message January 2019 Looking Forward
I am reflecting on a good year at St. Paul's. We were active on many fronts- Steady
attendance, a variety of music programs, social gatherings, successful fund raising, and
the continuity of some of our traditional activities. All of this becomes possible as you
commit to serve each other and the outside community through your devotion to St.
Paul's. If you take a moment to reflect back, you should feel good about what you helped
St. Paul's do this year. And if you want to be more involved this coming year, there are
willing volunteers around every activity who would welcome your help. The office staff
and our Pastors can help you find "your place" at St. Paul's.
In the next few months we will become focused on this year's Lent and Easter obser-
vances. We will have the opportunity to support our youth as they host a spaghetti din-
ner, and we plan to host the Annual Yard Sale again. Look to our regular communica-
tions to see updates on our activities and opportunities to serve. As I think of current
needs, we need worship assistants, helpers to set up and clean up the altar, ushers for
worship, and choir members for any of the choirs. Most importantly, worship services
are best when we share them with a larger group. If you don't worship regularly by
choice, we'd love to see you more often. If you do come to services, you should be part of
a welcoming atmosphere- St. Paul's is your church home and you can help to make this a
welcoming church home to others.
As I reflect on the leadership needs, there are currently openings on church council, and
there will be more openings in the spring as we meet in May for our semi-annual congre-
gational meeting. If you have ever lead a team of two or two hundred, you have the abil-
ity to help St. Paul's as we seek to grow with our surrounding community. Please give
prayerful consideration to adding St. Paul's Church Council to your way of contributing
to the life of our church.
Finally, I must extend thanks and gratitude to everyone who helped us close our budget
gap as we closed 2018. We are truly blessed as a church family, and I look forward to a
2019 of continued blessings!
Thanks be to God!
See you on Sunday!

Women’s Daily Grace— Dancing Outside Your Comfort Zone! 1/24/2019
We all have our comfort zones. Occasionally we are asked to step outside them. This is what I am facing this year. My son is going to be married soon. The upcoming event will require me to shop for a “fancy dress and shoes.” But that isn’t even the most difficult task I face. I have to learn to dance. This is not even close to my comfort zone.
God, too, has a way of asking us to step (and maybe even dance) outside our comfort zones. God has given us all gifts that we need to tap into. But we need to stretch those comfort zones.
Imagine if you invited a woman that hasn’t attended your congregational unit’s Bible study to come with you. What if you asked the young women in your congregation for ideas of new ministries your synodical wom-en’s organization could help in the coming year?

History Hall The hallway which runs along the
Chapel and Parish Hall which
John Murphy, Ken Keefer and the
all the Property Committee have
been working on for months re-
moving the bulletin boards and
repaint, will in the near future
become the “History Hall” of St.
Paul’s. The Archive has worked in
conjunction with the Worship and
Music Committee to make addi-
tions to this project. A “Clergy
Plaque” which is nearing comple-
tion which will include all the
Clergy of St. Paul’s who had a call
to St. Paul’s and selected Assis-
tant, Vicars and Associated. This
work is part of our preparation for
St. Paul’s 150th Anniversary
which will occur in the fall of
2020.
The preliminary design is shown
facing page.
Focusing on Our Time af-
ter Epiphany The Epiphany Season will draw to
a close March 5th with Shrove
Tuesday which will mark the be-
ginning of Lent. So the begin-
nings of Jesus’ Ministry here on
earth occurs between Epiphany
and the 7 Sundays that lead up to
Shrove Tuesday and the beginning
of Lent.
We are about to enter the 4th
week after Epiphany. To re-cap
Jan 13th—”The Baptism of Our
Lord” (Jesus Baptized by John in
the river Jordan.)
Jan 20th-”The Wedding in Ca-
na” (Jesus’ changes water into
wine and performs his first mira-
cle beginning His Ministry.)
Jan 27th-”Jesus reading in the
synagogue in his home
town” (There He reveals the mis-
sion of His Ministry.)
Going forward we will be focusing
on:
February 3rd- “No prophet is
accepted in his own country.” (Not
everyone was pleased by Jesus
reading in the temple with author-
ity and announcing these “words
have been fulfilled in your hear-
ing”.)
February 1oth-”Fishers of Men”
(Jesus calls Peter, James and
John to follow him in His Ministry
by performing his 2nd miracle of
finding so many fish that two
boats begin to sink.)
February 17th-”Jesus’ Sermon
on the Mount” (Also known as the
“Beatitudes” were Jesus explains
to the crowd the Kingdom of
Heaven.)
February 24th- “Continuation
of the Sermon on the
Mount.” (How the Christian
should respond to world around
them and “building faith” on a
firm foundation.)
All this will lead us into the season
of Lent. St. Paul’s Social Media
Team will again be holding a
“Count Down” to Easter journey-
ing through Lent. We will be do-
ing a number of posts in various
media focusing on the scriptures
that St. Paul’s we be looking at
during Lent. Be sure and follow

Pre-Yard Sale Information
It’s BAACK… the annual yard sale will soon be here!
It’s cold right now, but spring will soon be upon us – time to clean out those closets and donate your unwanted treasures for the annual St. Paul’s yard sale. You likely have just what someone else is looking for. The sale date is April 27, 2019 from 8 AM to 2 PM.
Last year we raised over $3700 for the capital improvement fund. This year Brother-hood voted to dedicate yard sale proceeds towards the Scholarship Fund for further education of youth active in the congregation.
We will have more details and be requesting assistance from volunteers as the date approaches, so stay tuned. This event has a record of great participation and good fel-lowship. Don’t miss the chance to donate, be involved, and find a few treasures for yourself! Any items not sold will be donated to the Lutheran Mission Society of Mary-land for their needs.
We appreciate donations as soon as possible to stay ahead on pricing. Just leave any items in the basement on the table outside the yard sale room. (We would prefer that larger items not be delivered until closer to the sale day, when the parsonage garage is available for storage.) If you need help transporting items to the church, please call John Korslund or the church office and leave a message for John (301) 725-0241

that make the News & Notes possible!
Special Notes: Have an item to share for the newsletter? Please submit items of interest by the 20th of the month for publication the first Sunday of the following month.
Please let the church know of any Affirmations or people we should remember and other prayer re-quests
Last But Not Least
Photo releases: As we continue to update our website we need your help! We have people who take photos at events and we would like to high-light these events through the website! But, we also respect your need for privacy. We will not post photos that show the faces of anyone under 18. We also will not post your photo without your permission. We ask that you contact the church office via email or snail mail or put a note in the “communications box” in the office and let us know if you DO NOT want your image used on the site.
