J esus said: "I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down

his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in or-der to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father."

Y o soy el buen Pastor. El buen Pastor da su

vida por las ovejas. El asalariado, en cambio, que no es el pastor y al que no pertenecen las ovejas, cuando ve ve-nir al lobo las abandona y huye, y el lobo las arrebata y las dispersa. Como es asalariado, no se preocupa por las ovejas. Yo soy el buen Pastor: conozco a mis ovejas, y mis ovejas me conocen a mí -como el Padre me conoce a mí y yo conozco al Padre- y doy mi vida por las ovejas. Tengo, además, otras ovejas que no son de es-te corral y a las que debo también conducir: ellas oirán mi voz, y así habrá un solo Rebaño y un solo Pastor. El Padre me ama porque yo doy mi vida para recobrarla. Nadie me la quita, sino que la doy por mí mismo. Tengo el poder de darla y de reco-brarla: este es el mandato que recibí de mi Padre".

The Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.” Both Pilate and the Jews saw this shepherd led to the cross for his sheep as the prophets had clearly foretold long before his Pas-sion: “Like a lamb led to the slaughter or a sheep silent before shearers” (Is 53:7). He did not refuse death, he did not flee judgement, and he did not repulse those crucifying him. He did not undergo the Passion: he willed it for the sake of his sheep: “I have power to lay down my life,” he said, “and the power to take it up again.” He destroyed suffering with the suffering of the Passion, death with his death. With his grave he opened graves. He shook the dwelling of the dead and made its bolts spring open. Graves are sealed and the prison shut so long as the Shepherd does not descend into death to preach liberation to those of his sheep who are asleep (cf 1Pt 3:19). We see him in the dwelling of the dead: he gives the command to come out; even there we see him renew the call to life. “The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep”: this is how he seeks the love of his sheep. Whoever loves Christ is the one who hears his voice.

«Yo soy el buen pastor. El buen pastor da su vida por sus ovejas». Pilatos vio a ese pastor; los judíos lo vieron, lo condujeron a la cruz por causa de su manada, como el coro de los profetas lo había anunciado claramente antes de la Pasión: «Como un cordero, fue llevado al matadero, como una oveja muda cuando la esqui-lan» (Is 53:7). No rehúsa la muerte, no le huye al juicio, no rechaza a los que lo crucifican. No fue sometido a la Pasión: él la deseó por sus ovejas. «Tengo el poder de entregar mi vida, dijo él mismo, y el poder de retomar-la». Él destruye el sufrimiento por el sufrimiento de su Pasión, la muerte por su muerte. Por su tumba, abre las tumbas. Sacude el lu-gar adónde duermen los muertos, le hace saltar los cerrojos. Las tumbas están selladas y la prisión cerrada mientras que el Pastor no desciende en la muerte para ir a anunciar la liberación a aquellas ovejas suyas que se habían adormecido (1P 3:19). Lo vemos bajar adónde duermen los muertos: les da la orden de salir, lo vemos ren-ovar incluso allí el mismo llamado a la vida. «El buen pastor da su vida por sus ovejas»: es así que busca el amor de sus ovejas. Quien ama a Cristo, es aquél que es-cucha su voz.

Haverstraw. We are pleased that we can offer Spanish–

speaking bereaved parents a place to get away from everyday

life, to consider their own spiritual journey in relation to

Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports the

Church in over 25 countries that are still struggling to recover

in the aftermath of communist rule. Funds from this collection
