STOP ASSISTED SUICIDE IN CALIFORNIA
Stop Assisted Suicide in CA before it’s too late! Earlier this year, through a Special Session, the CA legislature passed assisted suicide, allowing doctors to prescribe overdose medication to terminally ill patients. Join a coalition of physi-cians, nurses, disability-rights organizations, and people of all faiths to stand for the lives of our elderly and dying and oppose assisted suicide! On the weekends of December 12/13, and 19/20 petitions will be available for signature outside of Masses. Signers must be registered to vote in California and can only sign once.
Why Oppose Assisted Suicide? • Sends the Wrong Message: Legalizing sui-
cide for the terminally ill, while discouraging it for the rest of the population, teaches that the lives of the ill and disabled do not matter to our society.
• Will Worsen Patient Care: Patients in other states, like Barbara Wagner in Oregon, are being denied treatment prescribed by their doctors, and instead offered drugs for assist-ed suicide.
• Will Increase Non-Terminal Suicide Rates: Suicides skyrocket when assisted suicide is legalized. Oregon's suicide rate for non-terminal people increased 49% after assisted suicide became legal.

Oh, Christmas Tree!!! Saint Boniface was an eight-century missionary praised by Pope Gregory II who brought Christianity to Germany. Returning to Germany later, he found that Christianity has not taken hold. On Christmas Eve he came upon the eldest son of the chieftain Gundhar being readied for sacrifice to the gods. The place was under the giant oak tree, sacred to their patron Thor. Boniface, in order to prove these gods powerless, felled the tree with the stroke of an ax to the astonishment of the onlookers.
When he was asked for the word of God, Boniface proclaimed that God’s counsel was that no blood would be spilt on the night of the birth of God’s Son, who was savior of the world. Boniface pointed to a small, young evergreen which was close by. It signi-fied peace because of its use in building people’s homes. The shape of the tree pointed toward heave, and the tree’s constant greenness symbolized everlasting life. Thus, Boniface made the evergreen the Christmas tree. People were to gather around it in their homes, not in the woods. People would no longer give sacrifice to pagan gods. Instead, people would receive gifts of love and the kindness of light to commemorate the birth of the Christ Child.
