St. Paul’s Lutheran

† The Epis le

Hello St. Paul’s and friends of the Church, It was wonderful to attend the Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod Assembly along with Kim Holle as voting mem-bers. A Synod Assembly happens once a year. We reelected Rev. Michael Rinehart as our synodical Bishop. He received 145 votes and 135 votes were required for election. Bishops serve a 6-year term and oversee the churches in a particular geographical area. They also serve as pastor to the pastors. The Assembly passed the Memorial Earth Charter. This declaration seeks to “inspire in all peoples a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the human family, the greater community of life, and future generations.” Now it will go to on to the 2019 Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA (Aug. 5-10 in Milwau-kee, Wisconsin) for discussion. The Assembly passed a resolution to be a welcoming AMMPARO Synod. This acronym stands for Accompanying Migrant Minors with protection, advocacy, representation, and opportunities. We updated bylaws for how many voting members can attend a Synod Assembly: Baptized membership: 1-174 (minimum 1 and maximum 2); Baptized membership 175-349 (minimum 2 and maximum 2), etc. Currently our Baptized membership is 213. We elected members to the Synod discipline committee, consultation committee, and Synod council, adopted the 2020-21 budget, worshipped, and had lots of opportunities to fellowship with members of churches throughout our synod. We learned together around the theme “Sacred Shift” about going from a judger mindset to a learner mindset. Judger mindset is critical, blame oriented, problem focused, protective/fearful. But the learner mindset is appreciative, responsibility oriented, solution focused, and curious. As disciples of Christ, we gather around Jesus in awe, needing direction, knowing we don’t have all the answers, simply following the One who has saved us by His Grace. Jesus has called us into this community of faith, to follow him in obedience and make more disciples, baptizing and teaching others what he commands. Blessings as we Go, Make, Baptize, Teach, Pastor Nancy

Getting to Know You! Kathryn Wright was born at home in Moore County, Texas, on February 8, 1936,

to John Frank and Pearlie Wright, and Kathryn was their third daughter. She grew up in

the Canadian River Gas Co. camp (Bivins Station containing 35 houses), between Amarillo

and Dumas, TX. She attended a four-room school through the 8th grade and then for

high school, the company bused them to Dumas. Kathryn’s father died when she was

15 and then they moved to Perryville, Arkansas and she finished high school and college

in Arkansas. When they moved to Arkansas, they became farmers. Kathryn said life at

Bivins was fun as there were many children at every child’s age and they had lots of

playmates. All age games were football in the fall and softball in the Spring. They also

had tennis courts, bikes, and a recreation hall to keep them entertained.

Kathryn taught school for 38 years, of which 33 were in Baytown. She taught at Robert E Lee High School the last

30 years. She organized and coached girls swimming and girls and boys water polo and was the Director of the Lee

Brigadiers for 18 years. Kathryn also sponsored cheerleaders and served girls physical education as department

chairman part of that time.

Kathryn has been a member at St. Paul’s for about a year. She had joined the Lord of Life Lutheran Church while

she was living in Austin. Here favorite thing about St. Paul’s is the People and her favorite hymn is, “It is Well With

my Soul.” Kathryn loves to travel, photography, stained glass and etching.
