THE GOSPEL READING John 12 : 12-16 The Precentor

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Matthew: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 12 The next day the great crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord—the King of Israel!’ 14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it; as it is written: 15 ‘Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Look, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!’ 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written of him and had been done to him. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Let us pray. Merciful God, as we enter this holy week and gather at your house of prayer, turn our hearts again to Jerusalem, to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, that, united with Christ and all the faithful, we may one day enter in triumph the city not made with hands, the new Jerusalem, eternal in the heavens, where, with you and the Holy Spirit, Christ lives in glory for ever. Amen.

All process into the Cathedral. Please remain standing when you arrive in the Cathedral.

THE LITURGY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, during Lent we have been preparing by works of love and self-sacrifice for the celebration of our Lord’s death and resurrection. Today we come together to begin this solemn celebration in union with the Church throughout the world. Christ enters his own city to complete his work as our Saviour, to suffer, to die, and to rise again, and to win for us the peace that passes all understanding. Therefore let us pray for the peace of the world, and particularly for the peace of the city Jesus entered hailed as Messiah and King, and wherever people long for justice and peace. Let us pray for the gift of courage and strength to continue our work for peace, reconciliation, justice and dignity, for all people. I invite you now, in the name of the Church, to go into this week with Christ in faith and love, so that, united with him in his sufferings, we may share his risen life. Let us go with Christ in hope and faith, so that, united with him in his obedience, we may share his peace with others in the places in which we live, work and worship, and in the troubled places of this world. Let us go with Christ in thanksgiving and trust, so that, united with him in his glory, we may celebrate

his victory over sin and death, and share his gift of reconciliation and new life with others: Let us pray.

All kneel or sit

True and humble king, hailed by the crowd as Messiah: grant us the faith to know you and love you, that we may be found beside you on the way of the cross, which is the path of glory. Amen.

Please be seated for the readings

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD THE FIRST READING Isaiah 50 : 4 – 9a William Hastie

4 The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens - wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5 The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backwards. 6 I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7 The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8 he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9 It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty? Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

PSALM 31 : 9 – 18 Please remain seated. Reader and congregation say alternate verses 9 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trouble:

my eye wastes away for grief my throat also and my inward parts. 10 For my life wears out in sorrow, and my years in sighing:

my strength fails me in my affliction, and my bones are consumed. 11 I am become the scorn of all my enemies:

and my neighbours wag their heads in derision. 12 I am a thing of horror to my friends:

and those that see me in the street shrink from me. 13 I am forgotten like one dead and out of mind:

I have become like a broken vessel. 14 For I hear the whispering of many: and fear is on every side. 15 While they plot together against me: and scheme to take away my life. 16 But in you, Lord, have I put my trust: I have said ‘You are my God.’ 17 All my days are in your hand:

O deliver me from the power of my enemies and from my persecutors.

4

18 Make your face to shine upon your servant: and save me for your mercy’s sake.

Please stand to sing

THE GRADUAL HYMN

2

Ride on, ride on in majesty, in lowly pomp ride on to die; O Christ, thy triumphs now begin o’er captive death and conquered sin.

4

Ride on, ride on in majesty; the last and fiercest strife is nigh; the Father on his sapphire throne awaits his own anointed Son.

3

Ride on, ride on in majesty; the wingèd squadrons of the sky look down with sad and wondering eyes to see the approaching sacrifice.

5

Ride on, ride on in majesty, in lowly pomp ride on to die; bow thy meek head to mortal pain, then take, O God, thy power and reign!

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Bible Study Group

Let us pray for the world and for the Church.

With faith and love and in union with Christ let us offer our prayers before the throne of grace: have mercy on your people for whom your Son laid down his life, and strengthen your church to preach Christ crucified with love, humility and confidence. Lord, hear us. Lord, hear our prayer.

5

We pray for those who work to bring healing and wholeness to nations torn apart by divisions of religion, race or culture, for people caught up in war and violence and for an end to all corruption in social and economic life. Lord, hear us. Lord, hear our prayer.

We pray for those who are close to us, members of our families, our friends and those with whom we work or share times of recreation, especially those who are distant from us or travelling at this time. Lord, hear us. Lord, hear our prayer.

We pray for those who are in sickness of mind or body and strengthen all those who minister healing, support and comfort to the sick and dying. Lord, hear us. Lord, hear our prayer.

We pray that Jesus uplifted may draw all things to himself so that the whole creation may come to fulfilment in your eternal kingdom. Lord, hear us. Lord, hear our prayer.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled and wandered far off.

Let us then ask for mercy, confessing our sins in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please stand for

THE GREETING OF PEACE Christ has reconciled us to God in one body by the cross. We meet in his name and share his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

The people greet one another with a sign of God’s peace. Remain standing for

THE OFFERTORY HYMN During which a collection is received for the ministry of St Paul’s Cathedral. Every week, our congregants contribute on average $20 each. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your gift.

Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo, between our sins and their reward we set the Passion of thy Son our Lord.

And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing Presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy’s breast, O do thine utmost for their souls’ true weal; from tainting mischief keep them pure and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere.

And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so aweful and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill: in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.

William Bright (1824–1901) Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised 397ii

THE PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation: through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings to your glory and for the service of your kingdom: Blessed be God forever.

THE HOLY COMMUNION THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. The president offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ, and in response we sing together:

Christ Church Mass - Matthias

The president recalls the Last Supper, and a minister introduces the following acclamation Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. The prayer continues, and concludes: ... in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray, each in our own language, Notre Père..., Padre nuestro..., Vater unser..., 我們在天上的父 …,

Bapa kami..., E to matou Matua..., 天の父よ ... Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

8

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

THE INVITATION

The gifts of God for the people of God.

Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

All baptised Christians are invited to receive the bread and the wine of the Eucharist. Please tell the priest if you prefer to receive a gluten free wafer or a blessing. Please keep your valuables with you.

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD’S PEOPLE THE POST-COMMUNION SENTENCE

Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Matthew 21.5

THE POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Said by the president and people, standing.

God of mercy, may we who have shared this holy meal know your forgiveness in our lives, bring your reconciliation to others, and be a sign of your wholeness in this broken world.

Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name.

THE DISMISSAL HYMN

3

Fulfilled is now what David told in true prophetic song of old, how God the nation’s King should be; for God is reigning from the Tree.
