For the past thirty-six, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church has become a hospitable place where the human spirit speaks through the arts. St. Paul’s Music, a self-supporting 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, has a three-fold purpose. First, the organization supports mission projects such as recordings and tours. Second, St. Paul’s Music supports the Choral Scholar Program of St. Paul’s Choir School that underwrites private music lessons to deserving youth. Third, the organization continues to feature choral masterworks performed by St. Paul’s Choir with orchestra, as well as professional artists from the Indianapolis area and around the world. Biography Since his debut at age eighteen, Colin Andrews has been recognized as a musician of great

versatility, power and artistry. Born in Bristol, England, Andrews initially studied organ with Garth Benson of St. Mary Redcliffe Church. At sixteen, he entered London’s Royal Academy of Music for four years of organ and piano study under principal professors Douglas Hawkridge and Margaret McDonald. He later moved to Geneva, Switzerland where he was a student of Professor Lionel Rogg. Following his return to Britain he studied privately for two years with Dame Gillian Weir.

Colin Andrews has been the recipient of many awards; most notably, he was a prizewinner at both the 1980 and 1982 Dublin International Organ Competitions in Ireland, and, in 1993, The Royal Academy of Music, London, bestowed an Associateship upon him in recognition of his distinguished performing career.

Mr. Andrews has toured worldwide both as a solo recitalist and in solo and ensemble concerts with his wife, American organist Janette Fishell. He has appeared at a number of the world’s most prestigious venues including the Royal Festival Hall, London; King’s College, Cambridge; Suntory Hall, Tokyo; Hong Kong Cultural Center; The Moscow Conservatoire; the Cathedral of Notre Dame, Paris; the National Conventions of the NZAO and the American Guild of Organists; Yale, Duke and Stanford Universities, plus leading halls and cathedrals in Taiwan, South America, Iceland, Finland, Australia, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, South Africa and most of Eastern and Western Europe. Future engagements include concert tours of Asia, Europe and numerous engagements in the US.

In addition to his recitals, Colin Andrews is an active teacher and lecturer, and has given presentations at, among other venues, the Franz Liszt Academy, Budapest; Taiwan Theological College; Pipe Organ Encounter, Pittsburgh; Oundle Summer School for Young Organists, Oundle, UK; Emory University; and at the 1998 AGO National Convention. He has recorded 20 broadcasts for the BBC and has appeared on local and national television and radio in Russia, Poland, the UK, Japan and New Zealand. Commercial compact discs are available on the Priory, Zig Zag and Gothic/Loft labels.

Colin Andrews has served as a jury member for the International Organ Competition at the University of Michigan and for both the 1995 and 1997 J.P. Sweelinck Competitions, Gdansk, Poland. Mr. Andrews was also jury President/recitalist for the 2006 Felix Nowowiejski International Organ Competition in Poznan, Poland. He has served as a national councilor and local President of the I.A.O., UK and has served as Organist/Master of the Choristers at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Goldsboro, NC, USA, his country of residence. In the summer of 2004 he led that choir in its first international concert tour, conducting concerts in the cathedrals of Wells, Bristol and St. David’s, UK. During the 2000/2001 academic year Mr. Andrews was Visiting Lecturer in Organ and Sacred Music at East Carolina University. His students have distinguished themselves at the national and international levels of the competition circuit and have been accepted by all of the major organ programs in the US. In the fall of 2005, he joined the East Carolina faculty, teaching in the areas of Applied Organ and Organ Literature. During the 2008-2009 academic year, Andrews was Interim Director of Organ and Sacred Music Studies at East Carolina University. Since the autumn of 2009, Colin Andrews has been Adjunct Professor of Music at Indiana University; he is also Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church, Columbus, Indiana. Recently, Mr. Andrews was named “Membre d’Honneur” of the “Association Grand Orgue Trinite Messiaen” based at “l’Eglise de la Sainte Trinite” in Paris, where Messiaen was organist for 61 years. This honor is in recognition of Mr. Andrews’s work with Messiaen’s organ works. Currently, Colin Andrews is recording the complete organ works of Messiaen on the Gothic/Loft label. In 2012, Mr. Andrews’s recording of “L’Ascension” & “Messe de la Pentecote” by Messiaen was listed among the top 10 recordings of the year in the category of sacred music by “Christianity Today”. During the spring semester 2014, Colin Andrews will be leading a team to design a set of Organ and Sacred Music courses for a new Indiana University online initiative.

The American Guild of Organists (AGO) is the national professional association serving the organ and choral music fields. The Guild serves approximately 20,000 members in 330 chapters throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Founded in 1896 as both an educational and service organization, the Guild seeks to set and maintain high musical standards and to promote understanding and appreciation of all aspects of organ and choral music. Under the leadership of the National Council, a network of volunteer committees and officials at the regional, district, and local levels directs the activities of the Guild. The AGO National Headquarters is in New York City where a full time staff supports and coordinates publication, administration, and development activities of the organization. For purposes of administration and representation, the Guild is divided into nine geographical regions, and each chapter is assigned to one of them. The purposes of the American Guild of Organists are:

To advance the cause of organ and choral music, to increase their contributions to aesthetic and religious experiences, and to promote their understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment.

To improve the proficiency of organists and choral conductors. To evaluate, by examination, attainments in organ playing, choral techniques, conducting, and the

theory and general knowledge of music, and to grant certificates to those who pass such examinations at specified levels of attainment.

To provide members with opportunities to meet for discussion of professional topics, and to pursue such other activities as contribute to the fulfillment of the purposes of the Guild.

Guild sponsored activities include a series of examinations for professional certification as well as programs and an extensive list of publications, audiocassettes and learning resources for all levels of interest. The Guild sponsors competitions in organ performance and improvisation and in organ and choral composition. National and regional conventions held in alternate years, present the finest performers. THE AMERICAN ORGANIST magazine, published monthly by the AGO, is the most widely read journal devoted to organ and choral music in the world. The Indianapolis Chapter of the AGO has approximately 150 members. Members come from all walks of life. Many members are organ enthusiast.
