GOOD NEWS REFLECTION: DO YOU NEED A BREAKTHROUGH?
Are you at an impasse in your spiritual growth or emotional healing or a difficult relationship? Do you need a breakthrough? Do you feel stuck behind a fence that is keeping you on the outside of peace, joy, satisfaction, or healing? This Sunday's Gospel reading tells us that Jesus is the gate in that fence. He helps us reach the heavenly side of the gate, outside the realm of earthly restrictions -- not only when we die and enter eternal life, but also here and now in our earthly life, so that we might always "have life and have it more abundantly." When our path seems blocked, we can only make progress by letting Jesus shepherd us around and through and over the obstacles. If people shut a door on something that God wants us to do, Jesus is still our open gate, and no one can close him out of our lives. He will lead us into a new opportunity for accomplishing the plans of God. If he's given us a frustrated holy desire or a passion for which there seems to be no outlet, instead of complaining or quitting, we must look at Jesus and see him as a gate that opens into a new direction or location. Remember, however, that until we get all the way through this gate, we must stick close to him like dumb sheep. There's a journey to take before we can reach the other side of the fence. The thief that comes to steal and slaughter can only reach us when we stray away from Jesus and we take our eyes off of him. Despair and worry are two common thieves, robbing us of peace, joy, satisfaction, and healing. But they're not as powerful as they pretend to be. We defeat them easily by remembering that they do not speak the full truth. The truth is: Jesus is our Good Shepherd safely guiding us into a life of abundant victory! What breakthrough are you hoping for? What's frustrating you and seems hopeless? What's causing you to think that a problem you're facing might lead to disaster and destruction? What will you do this week to follow Jesus more closely so that you can get through this with more peace? Share the story of a time when you experienced obstacles and Jesus provided a breakthrough that led to victory. © 2020 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com.
¿Qué te frustra y parece no tener esperanza? © 2020 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com. POPE FRANCIS: THE ROSARY The month of May is approaching, a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” aspect, also from a spiritual point of view. For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow. Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affection I send you my blessing. Jesus calls himself the gate. He represents the barrier that keeps the flock safe at night and thieves at bay. They will have to go through him to get to the flock. The flock behind the barrier belongs to many shepherds who have all brought their animals to this place to spend the dangerous hours of the night. Jesus will say that he has other sheep that are not of this sheep pen (John 10:16). This is a clear reference to the fact that many flocks come together for the safety afforded by the watchman and the cave through the night. In this period of danger the sheep are all in one place. Left alone at night they would remain agitated and become easy prey for the local predator population. Penned together in a large number the sheep appear to an enemy as an animal too large to attack. The sheep mingle, settle down, and then rest. This is a wonderful image for the church. God calls all Christians together in times of danger so that, as a larger group, we are less vulnerable to predators. Left alone we are easy prey. When we come together and know that Jesus is the gate, we are safe. We can rest. Pope Francis has pointed out that the enemies of the gospel, the enemies of the church, know that the body of Christ is one. He reminds us that before a Christian is martyred by a terrorist he is not asked his denomination. She is not asked how she prefers to worship the Lord. Martyrs are killed simply because they profess faith in Christ. Pope Francis reminds us that if the enemy knows we are one in Christ, how is it that we ourselves miss this point? Jesus is the gate. We enter the sheepfold through him. It is a place of safety and repose. Contemplate Jesus welcoming you into the fold so that you will face the terrors of the night. In addition, pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters who do face those terrors, especially in the churches of Syria, Iraq, Iran and China. Pray in solidarity that they will receive the gift of faith they need to sustain them in times of persecution and death.
