The Great ThanksgivingPresider The Lord be with you All and also with you.

Presider Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Presider It is indeed right that we should praise you, gracious God, for you created all things. You formed us in your own image: male and female you created us.When we turned away from you in sin, you did not cease to care for us, but opened a path of salvation for all people. You made a covenant with Israel, and through your servants Abraham and Sarah gave the promise of a blessing to all nations.Through Moses you led your people from bondage into freedom;through the prophets you renewed your promise of salvation. Therefore, with them, and with all your saints who have served you in every age,we give thanks and raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name.

Sanctus Mass for Many Nations Rupert Lang

9CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL

Presider Holy God, source of life and goodness, all creation rightly gives you praise. In the fullness of time, you sent your Son Jesus Christ,to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.He healed the sick and ate and drank with outcasts and sinners;he opened the eyes of the blind and proclaimed the good news of your kingdom to the poor and to those in need.In all things he fulfilled your gracious will.On the night he freely gave himself to death, our Lord Jesus Christ tookbread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to hisdisciples, and said, "Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you.Do this for the remembrance of me."After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins, Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Presider Gracious God, his perfect sacrifice destroys the power of sin and death; by raising him to life you give us life for evermore. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith.

All Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

St. Peter and St. Paul | June 29, 201410

Presider Recalling his death, proclaiming his resurrection, and looking for his coming again in glory, we offer you, Father, this bread and this cup.Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts, that all who eat and drink at this table may be one body and one holy people,a living sacrifice in Jesus Christ, our Lord.Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, almighty Father, now and for ever.

All Amen.

11CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have partic-ipated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If you desireto know the love of God that overcomes indifference and despair, if you desire the reconciliation that

overcomes estrangement and alien ation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. The bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the commoncup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grapejuice are served, grape juice is administered from the pottery chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available uponrequest in the East alcove.

Breaking of the BreadPresider “I am the bread of life,” says the Lord.

“Whoever comes to me will never be hungry;whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

All Taste and see that the Lord is good;happy are they who trust in him!

Presider The gifts of God for the people of God.All Thanks be to God.

During Communion Agnus Dei Paul Halley

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in

a prayer of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread andwine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your first name and in a low voice brieflystate your prayer need. The prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a timefor quiet prayer and meditation.

Sending Out of the DisciplesPrayer After CommunionPresider God of love,All may we who have taken holy things

grow in unity and peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen

Closing Hymn Hymn To Freedom Lyrics: Henriette Hamilton, Music: Oscar Peterson

When every heart joins every heart and together yearns for liberty, That's when we'll be free.

When every hand joins every hand and together moulds our destiny, That's when we'll be free.

Any hour any day, the time soon will come when men will live in dignity, That's when we'll be free.

When every man joins in our song and together singing harmony, That's when we'll be free.

Dismissal Let us go in peace rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. All Thanks be to God.

Music NotesThe Summer Music Festival today pays tribute toCanada Day by acknowledging composers HealeyWillan, Imant Raminsh, F.R.C. Clarke and PaulHalley, along with authors Fran Davis and HerbertO'Driscoll. As I approach Canada Day, I alwaysrealize how very fortunate I am to call this myhome; but at the same time I never want to take forgranted the word "Freedom," with the manyimplications that word brings with it. Recently Iwoke up one morning with thoughts of the JazzFestival here - and the name Oscar Petersonjumped into my head. This international giant ofJazz wrote a piece called "Hymn to Freedom"which seemed like a perfect closer for today’s serv-ice - tying in nicely with the gospel/jazz feel ofHalley's Rain is Over and Gone, whose text alsoshares a similar message around Freedom.I will leave you to google the true story of "Hymnto Freedom." Suffice it to say it first appeared onthe 1962 album "Night Train," where Peterson was

Your Input Welcome AS THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF CANADA

CONSIDERS THE SOLEMNIZATION OF MATRIMONY

FOR SAME SEX COUPLES

In 2013 the General Synod passed a resolutiondirecting the drafting of a motion “to changeCanon XXI on marriage to allow the marriage ofsame-sex couples in the same way as opposite-sexcouples, and that this motion should include a con-science clause so that no member of the clergy, bishop, congregation or diocese should be con-strained to participate in or authorize such mar-riages against the dictates of their conscience.” Astipulation of General Synod is that the preparationof this motion should demonstrate a broad consul-tation has taken place. They are inviting signed, written submissions on the matter of amendingCanon XXI or video submissions. As members ofthe Anglican Church of Canada, your input is vital-ly important as we enter this process of discern-ment together, under the guidance of the HolySpirit. If you are interested in making a personalsubmission, or finding more details, please seehttp://goo.gl/Gz0U2V. The Cathedral ParishCouncil will be considering sending a response

from Cathedral Parish leadership.

The Water ProjectOn Sunday June 1st, Christ Church Cathedralmade a real splash by launching its Water Project, affectionately known as “Brush Your Teeth, Flushthe Toilet, Wash Your Hands.”

Our launch event, which featured an intergenera-tional lunch, water games, and a dunk tank, raisedapproximately $2,536 (TBC) towards our $10,000project goal. Ten thousand dollars is approximatelyhalf the cost of equipping one home with clean, running water, and in-home wastewater disposal inthe fly-in Northern Ontario town of Pikangikum.

In Pikangikum, 430 of the 450 (or 95% of ) homesdo not have clean running water or wastewaterservice. The town has a population of about 2,400people, about half of whom are youth. Several yearsago, this community made international headlineswhen a wave of youth suicides gave it the highestknown per capita suicide rate in the world.

The Cathedral is joining with individuals andparishes across the country to contribute to anoverall project goal of raising $200,000, to equip10 homes with clean water.

My Spiritual Home

Christ Church is my adopted family. Some of us areover 90 and others under 12. I see many almostevery week, some have moved away, and others havegone before us. This family is composed of people Iwill not meet in any other social setting. We are aliving example of the encompassing love of God andmy inclusion in that circle is a gift I cherish. I won’talways remember names but I do remember smilesand waves and hugs. Change is a part of life andmuch has changed since the mid 1970’s when Ibegan attending Christ Church. What remains andcontinues is a family journeying and supporting eachother and I thank God for that now and always.Amen.

Kerry Baisley

On December 7, 1993, my husband died in an acci-dent while away on business. I needed a church forhis funeral, and two colleagues at Langara College,Diana Sly and Bob Worcester, arranged for it thatSaturday at Christ Church Cathedral. The next dayI came back and never left, and my daughter grew uphere. In 1998 I became a server and am still one. This is as comfortable to me as my own room. When people ask me what I find here, I say areminder that the world is not just about money orpower, but about caring for others and the naturalworld, not to mention the challenging sermons andthe gorgeous music.

Notes from the Deacon and Business ChaplainJUNE 29, 2014

One of the things that has struck me over the pastcouple of weeks is hope. I have seen it, I have expe-rienced it. Hope.

I learned of a lunch between an estranged fatherand son. I watched Bishop Melissa quietly ask ayoung boy how he pronounced his name, and thenreturning to him in the confirmation, pronounc-ing it as he had. I have watched and prayed with ayoung woman as she wrestles with mental illnessand shows up every day.

I have seen hope and I trust that it is in and aroundus in God.

The Hebrew Bible text XX:XXXX is one thattouches on hope. In the depths of despair, in thedepths of the way things are, there is hope and pos-sibility of new life, new ways of being and doing.

There is a very, very interesting part of this storythat is not usually explored. I draw your attentionto http://girardianlectionary.net/year_a/proper_8a.htm a wonderful resource for exploring our texts ina different light.

We learn that the God at the beginning of thereading who demands the sacrifice from Abrahammay be a different God from the one at the endwho stops it. By looking at the Hebrew we see amost interesting shift from Elohim as the nameused for God in vs. 1, 3, 8, 9, and twelve.Beginning in vs. 11 and 14, however, the name forGod is Yahweh only (not even the common com-bined form of Yahweh Elohim, "LORD God").Here is the JPS Tanakh translation of Gen. 22:11-14:

Then an angel of the LORD [Yahweh] called to himfrom heaven: "Abraham! Abraham!" And heanswered, "Here I am." 12 And he said, "Do not raise

your hand against the boy, or do anything to him. Fornow I know that you fear God [Elohim], since youhave not withheld your son, your favored one, fromMe." 13 When Abraham looked up, his eye fell upona ram, caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abrahamwent and took the ram and offered it up as a burntoffering in place of his son. 14 And Abraham namedthat site Adonai [Yahweh]-yireh, whence the presentsaying, "On the mount of the LORD [Yahweh] thereis vision."

Is this story then recalling a shift, as we movedfrom the ancient polytheisms where human sacri-fice is demanded towards a LORD of compassion, community and love. In the depths of our ancientways, a new way was being born, a new hope, andnew possibility of compassion, community andlove.

I hope you have a wonderful afternoon reflectingon this very interesting shift in the text, and whatit might mean in your life.

Friday, June 27, 2014 marks my 10th anniversaryof ordained ministry. It has been and continues tobe a great honour to serve this community, thisdiocese and in a small way, God.
