St. Peter’s is open for Mass. We need it! Adoration rather than protest. If you are sick do not come; if you are afraid or nervous feel free to stay home. Otherwise, at your own risk, feel free to come to whatever Mass you like. First come, first served. You will still need to let the ushers seat you. We will still need our sanitizing crews, and we have been really shorthanded after the 5:30pm Mass on Saturday. Please avoid use of bathrooms as much as possible. The weekend Mass schedule (until further notice): Sat-urday 5:30pm English, 7:00pm Spanish; Sunday 8:00am Spanish, 10:00am English, 12:00 Noon Spanish.

Two Saints to invoke against contagion
St. Roch (died 1327AD) ministered to victims of an epidemic, was responsible for miraculous cures, contracted the disease himself, withdrew to the woods were he was himself miracu-lously healed. He has since been invoked in favor of victims of the plague and other epidemics.
St. Rosalie (died 1166AD) lived as a hermitess and died alone in her cave on Mt. Pelligrino outside Palermo, Sicily. In 1624, when a plague threatened the city she appeared to a hunter, revealed to him the location of her bones and ordered they be carried in procession. After her bones were carried three times around the city the plague ceased. She is the patron saint of Palermo.

SMA & St. Peter Confirmation Update:
We finally have answers!! The Bishop has granted faculties to his Parish Priests to be able to confer the Sacrament in their individual Parishes. What does that mean? That means that our own Pastor can give the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Bishop has asked to be invited to the Confirmations so that he can attend if his schedule allows. If the Bishop should be able to attend any of our Confirmation Masses he will then be the Main Celebrant and confer the Sacra-ment of Confirmation to the Confirmandi.
We have scheduled Confirmation Masses for:
Wednesday, August 5th @ 6:30pm
Thursday, August 6th @ 6:30pm
Wednesday, August 12th @ 6:30pm
Thursday, August 13th @ 6:30pm
Each Confirmation Family should have received a letter in the mail last week with these details and a few more, please call the office and let us know which language you would prefer. That will help us determine the majority for each Mass which will de-termine which language the Mass will be celebrated in.

From the Pastor’s Desk – Fr. Levine- I have been writing about the dignity of work and the importance of work
that is meaningful, personal, and truly human.
We can divide work broadly into two kinds: the making of things and the serving of persons. To that we can add then the maintenance of things made and the ‘maintenance of persons’, e.g. health care. The work is more personal the closer the worker is to the thing made or the server to the person served. Machinery, automa-tion, and computerization remove the worker more and more from the thing made, making work more efficient, but less per-sonal. The same is true with the relation between those engaged in works of service and the person served. There will always then be a tradeoff between efficiency and the personal quality of work. Nevertheless, a well-ordered socie-ty would, as much as possible, put the focus on the personal quality rather than the efficiency. The movement towards ‘globalization’ is a movement towards efficiency at the expense of personal connection. We can also reflect on the dignity of different types of work. This does not necessarily reflect remuneration, nor should it necessarily do so. That is especially so because it is impossible to put a price tag on ‘dignity’.
First, we can point out that there are jobs that are immoral and shameful, like prostitution and drug dealing, even when the former is given the name ‘sex work’ and the latter is legalized, as has happened with the marijuana industry. These ‘works’ contribute neither to the well-being of persons, nor of society; quite the contrary. The legalized gambling industry pretty much falls in the same category, even when it is used to support public schools. There is also a whole industry of souvenirs, knick-knacks, and curiosities, that have very little real artistic value. The entertain-ment and recreation industries certainly serve legitimate purpose, but recreation and entertainment certainly are not and should not be the primary goals of human life. Unfortunately, lacking any shared vision of a higher good, these industries have taken on a vastly disproportionate role in human life.
One problem with free-market economic theory is that that so long as money is exchanged between employer and employ-ee, between buyer and seller, the economy is functioning there is really no way to distinguish economic activity that really contributes something to society in terms of product or service and that which either does not contribute, or worse erodes and corrupts. That does not mean that free-market economic theory is flawed, just that it is limited. Unfortunately, no one seems to have any idea as to how a free market can properly be guided and directed without being suppressed. In 1991, after the collapse of Soviet Communism, St. John Paul II wrote a social encyclical Centesimus Annus, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Pope Leo XIII’s foundational social encyclical, Rerum Novarum.
He observes therein that Marxism failed because of its intrinsic contradictions. He does not, however, give an unqualified endorsement of capitalism, though he does recognize the importance of “an economic system which recognizes the funda-mental and positive role of business, the market, private property and the resulting responsibility for the means of produc-tion, as well as free human creativity in the economic sector.” (CA 42) But such a system must be “circumscribed within a strong juridical framework which places it at the service of human freedom in its totality.” (Ibid.) One reason for this is the intrinsic limitation of markets. “There are collective and qualitative needs which cannot be satisfied by market mechanisms. There are important human needs which escape its logic. There are goods which by their very nature cannot and must not be bought or sold.” (CA 40) A mother’s ‘work’ is not and cannot be valued in market terms. Yet, it is both indispensable and alto-gether escapes the logic of the market. Paid ‘day-care’ is never an adequate substitute. In any case, continuing with our consideration of the dignity of different kinds of work, we can say that work derives its digni-ty from the contribution to the well-being, material and spiritual, of human persons and human society. There is certainly a foundational dignity to those ‘essential’ works that serve our material well-being: the production and dis-tribution of food, shelter, and clothing; the maintenance of ‘infrastructure’; healthcare. It is also easier to put a ‘price-tag’ on these kinds of work. Work that serves the spiritual, intellectual, imaginative, and even emotional well-being of persons (e.g. priestly ministry, teaching, and the fine arts) possess a greater inherent dignity, but the more noble they are, the less they can be evaluated in monetary terms. There is another realm of ‘work’ that tends rather to be despised, because ‘quality’ in this realm is very lacking. Nevertheless, these works possess a great inherent nobility and are indispensable for human social life – works of leadership, organization, and administration. At the highest level this is the work not of the ‘politician’ or bureaucrat, but of the true ‘statesman’. In a just society, certainly all those who contribute by means of their work should also receive a sufficiency to meet their needs. Nevertheless, while remuneration cannot be proportioned simply to the dignity of the work, it is essential that apart from market mechanisms there be a strong social and cultural recognition of the proper hierarchy of ‘value’ or better ‘dignity’.
All work is not equal in dignity, nevertheless St. Joseph always reminds us of the dignity that comes from the workman him-self.

They were utterly perfect, and it was said of them that they were really pure like angels, but also proud like demons. It is a bad thing. Sin divides fraternity; sin makes us imagine we are better than others; sin makes us think we are comparable to God." (General Audience, April 10, 2019)

Podemos dividir el trabajo ampliamente en dos tipos: la fabricación de cosas y el servicio a las personas. Estas 'obras' no contribuyen ni al bienestar de las personas, ni de la sociedad; Todo lo contrario. La industria del juego legalizada cae en la misma categoría, incluso cuando se usa para apoyar a las escuelas públicas. También hay toda una industria de recuerdos, chucherías y curiosidades, que tienen muy poco valor artístico real. Las industrias del entretenimiento y la recreación ciertamente tienen un propósito legítimo, pero la recreación y el entretenimiento ciertamente no son ni deben ser los objetivos principales de la vida humana. Desafortunadamente, al carecer de una visión compartida de un bien superi-or, estas industrias han asumido un papel enormemente desproporcionado en la vida humana. Un problema con la teoría económica del libre mercado es que mientras el dinero se intercambie entre el empleador y el empleado, entre el comprador y el vendedor, la economía funciona realmente no hay forma de distinguir la actividad económica que realmente contribuye a la sociedad en términos de producto. o servicio y aquello que no contribuye, o peor aún, erosiona y corrompe. Eso no significa que la teoría económica del libre mercado sea errónea, sólo que es limitada. Desafortunadamente, nadie parece tener idea de cómo un mercado libre puede ser guiado y dirigido adecuadamente sin ser suprimido. En 1991, después del colapso del comunismo soviético, San Juan Pablo II escribió una encíclica social Centesimus Annus, conmemoran-do el centenario de la encíclica social fundacional del Papa León XIII, Rerum Novarum. Observa que el marxismo fracasó debido a sus contradicciones intrínsecas. Sin embargo, no otorga un respaldo incondicional al capi-talismo, aunque reconoce la importancia de "un sistema económico que reconozca el papel fundamental y positivo de las empresas, el mercado, la propiedad privada y la responsabilidad resultante de los medios de producción, al igual que la libre creatividad humana en el sector económico ". (CA 42) Pero dicho sistema debe "circunscribirse dentro de un marco jurídico fuerte que lo ponga al servicio de la libertad humana en su totalidad". (Ibid.) Una razón para esto es la limitación intrínseca de los mercados. “Hay necesidades colecti-vas y cualitativas que los mecanismos del mercado no pueden satisfacer. Hay importantes necesidades humanas que escapan a su lógica. Hay bienes que por su propia naturaleza no pueden ni deben comprarse ni venderse ". (CA 40) El 'trabajo' de una madre no es ni puede ser valorado en términos de mercado. Sin embargo, es indispensable y escapa por completo a la lógica del mercado. La 'guardería' pagada nunca es un sustituto adecuado. En cualquier caso, continuando con nuestra consideración de la dignidad de los diferentes tipos de trabajo, podemos decir que el tra-bajo deriva su dignidad de la contribución al bienestar, material y espiritual, de las personas y de la sociedad humana. Ciertamente, existe una dignidad fundamental en esas obras 'esenciales' que sirven a nuestro bienestar material: la producción y dis-tribución de alimentos, vivienda y vestimenta; el mantenimiento de 'infraestructura'; cuidado de la salud. También es más fácil poner un 'precio' a este tipo de trabajo. El trabajo que sirve al bienestar espiritual, intelectual, imaginativo e incluso emocional de las personas (por ejemplo, el ministerio sac-erdotal, la enseñanza y las bellas artes) posee una mayor dignidad inherente, pero cuanto más nobles son, menos pueden ser evalua-dos en términos monetarios. Hay otro ámbito de "trabajo" que tiende a ser menospreciado, porque la "calidad" en este ámbito es muy deficiente. Sin embargo, estas obras poseen una gran nobleza inherente y son indispensables para la vida social humana: obras de liderazgo, organización y administración. Al más alto nivel, este es el trabajo no del "político" o burócrata, sino del verdadero "estadista". En una sociedad justa, ciertamente todos aquellos que contribuyen por medio de su trabajo también deben recibir una suficiencia para satisfacer sus necesidades. Sin embargo, si bien la remuneración no puede ser proporcionada simplemente a la dignidad del tra-bajo, es esencial que, aparte de los mecanismos del mercado, haya un fuerte reconocimiento social y cultural de la jerarquía adecuada de "valor" o mejor "dignidad". Todo el trabajo no es igual en dignidad, sin embargo, San José siempre nos recuerda la dignidad que proviene del trabajador mismo.
