A Word from the Pastor

The Bible: Tool or Accessory…

At St. Peter’s, our council members take turns leading a devotional before each council meet. In June, the devotional was about Bible reading. Some stats were shared: 91% of households in the U.S. own at least one Bible, the typical household has three Bibles, on a typical week 38% of adults in the U.S. read the Bible in some form. The leader of the devotional noted most Bibles out there gather dust rather than readers. Why does something so central to us being disciples gather dust?

Maybe the Bible is intimidating, because it looks so big. Remember that it is a collection of books, that is what “Bible” means. You don’t have to start at Genesis 1:1. Pick anyplace and dive in…maybe in one of the gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.

Maybe the Bible sounds boring. Yet, read about Peter fishing naked and then seeing the resurrected Jesus on the beach (John 21). Read about a frustrated donkey speaking to a man named Balaam (Number 22:22-35). Read about how God lovingly created and knows us all (Psalm 139). Read about the guy who fell asleep to Paul’s sermon (Acts 20:7-12). Read about anything Jesus does in the four gospels. Whatever he does has a way of blowing your socks off.

Maybe the Bible is hard to read. Many people today still stand by the King James Version (KJV) from 1611, but it is hard to follow all those “thy’s” and thou’s.” Maybe you should try the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), a solid and textually accurate translation…good for Bible study. Or, for a more devotion reading of the Bible, try The Message, a powerfully rich paraphrase translation. For something in-between (and my current go-to), try the Common English Bible (CEB), a nice middle ground between the The Message and the NRSV. There are many translations. Find the one that fits you!

As a woodworker, my central tool is my tape measure. As disciples of Jesus, our central tool is the Bible, to open and put along side our lives…to see how God is present in our world…to know how much God

loves us…to hear how God is calling us to BOLDLYBOLDLYBOLDLYBOLDLY live and share God’s grace with all.live and share God’s grace with all.live and share God’s grace with all.live and share God’s grace with all. The Bible points us to God, who dusts us off with new life day after day.

Peace, Pastor V

Reformation 500

REFORMATION 500 PROJECT

October 31, 2017 will mark the 500thanniversary of when Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the

door of the Wittenberg Church, beginning what we now refer to as the Reformation.

We at St. Peter’s, along with Lutherans and other Protestants worldwide, will not only celebrate this

signi(icant event, but useitasanopportunitytoseekourownreformation. The Reformation is not

just something that happened in 1517 and revolutionized Christian theology, it continues today.

During 2017 we will emphasize outreach within our congregation, our community and our world.

What do we need to change in our church and within ourselves? How can we be better disciples?

Assisting Pastor Casey and Pastor Vanicek in this planning are the Evangelism, Social Outreach, and

Stewardship Teams. We welcome your input and will provide an opportunity for you to post your

reform/renewal ideas on our “church door.”

Worship Themes & Bible Studies

The Theme of “I Love to Tell the Story”“I Love to Tell the Story”“I Love to Tell the Story”“I Love to Tell the Story” began Sunday, August 28th 2016

Many of us know and love to sing this song. But is it true? Do you love to tell the story of God’s love that we hear in the Bible? Do you love to tell the story of Jesus’ saving grace that we hear in the Bible? Many of us struggle with feeling confident enough with the Biblical story to share it with others as God calls us to do. This is why the Worship & Music Team, Ministry Staff, and Congregation Council have decided to continue the changes we made to our lectionary cycle away from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL). This Fall we will continue with the Narrative Lectionary. We hope that you will fall in love with this story, connect it with your story of faith, and share it with someone who needs to hear the Good News. Here is a glimpse of how the story will unfold this summer:

Debaters of the Lost Ark: The Ten CommandmentsDebaters of the Lost Ark: The Ten CommandmentsDebaters of the Lost Ark: The Ten CommandmentsDebaters of the Lost Ark: The Ten Commandments June 18th – July 9th We spend 4 weeks delving into and debating the purpose of the 10 Commandments for modern-day Christians. The first week provides the theological and narrative context for the law. The second week is devoted to the first table of the Decalogue -- those laws that govern our relationship with God. The third week is devoted to the majority of the second table of the law, those laws that govern our relationships with each other. And the fourth week is devoted solely to the coveting commandments. As we continue under the theme “I Love to Tell the Story” we’ll explore and debate why the Mount Sinai story and the commandments themselves are stories we can love to tell.

Growing Generosity: Faithful StewardshipGrowing Generosity: Faithful StewardshipGrowing Generosity: Faithful StewardshipGrowing Generosity: Faithful Stewardship July 16th – 30th We spend 3 weeks steeped in stewardship. Through the story of the Rich Man (Mark 10:17-31), Jesus’ advice to “store up treasure in heaven” (Matthew 6:19-34), and the parable of the Rich Man & His Barns (Luke 12:13-34) we explore how faithful discipleship includes growing in generosity and why. As we continue under the theme “I Love to Tell the Story” we’ll explore how our generosity helps us tell the story of good news.

Meals on Wheels Cookie Project

Each month we will need . . .

17 dozen cookies by the Friday before the 3rd Saturday of the month (July 14th)

You can bring the cookies throughout the month, and put them in

the kitchen freezer marked

"Meals on Wheels."

The Helping Center needs your help! Let’s fill the basket!!

Please bring non-perishable and canned foods to the church throughout the month and leave in the grocery basket located in the Narthex. The last Sunday of each month (July 30th) they will be collected and delivered

to the Helping Center for distribution.

Retiree Round Up

St. Peter’s Retiree Round Up will meet Thursday, July 27, 2017, at 11:30am, in the Fellowship Hall

Speakers: Millie Baumann and Ray Bronk

Millie Baumann, age 90, will bring her book, Abandoned! The World War II Ordeal of an American Child Living and Surviving from 1928 to 1946 in Hitler's Nazi Germany. Ms. Baumann was born in the United States but at a very young age sent by ship to Germany to live with her grandparents. There she experienced the trauma of World War II under Nazi rule and the chaos after the war. She returned to the US as an adult and, by chance, found a pen-pal with similar experiences. Their letters have been compiled into a book that tells her story. Ray Bronk is editor and compiler of Millie's book and helps with her presentation.

We invite anyone interested, of any age, to attend.

Books will be available for purchase for $20, and Millie will be glad to autograph your copy.

A salad bar buffet lunch will follow the program. Bring a salad ingredient or a dessert to share.

Please RSVP by Sunday, July 23, by signing the attendance sheet in the narthex or by contacting Betty Matejowsky. Feel free to invite a friend.

Attention singers! Have you noticed that hymns can be hard to sing if the choir is not there to lead the singing? Contact Pat Erickson or Janette Clausen if you would be able to help with leadership of hymn singing at the worship time there is no choir. This would not be a commitment for every Sunday, but will be a small group of rotating singers.

Ministry Opportunity at Arbor House

Beginning in March, St. Peter’s has the privilege of providing worship the second Sunday of each month at Arbor House, an assisted living facility in Marble Falls. In March, Nick Bohmann led the worship with members of the choir helping with singing, greeting the residents and being a part of the “congregation” at Arbor House. In April, the worship was on Palm Sunday. Greg Murrell lead worship assisted by Emily and Riley who handed out palms and song sheets, with a few other members from St. Peter’s providing help in singing and fellowship. This worship will be 11:00, on the 2nd Sunday of each month. If this is something you would enjoy being a part of, just show up at Arbor House! Or call Janette Clausen at 830.596.2939.

St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Council Meeting Tuesday, May 16, 2017

The Council meeting was called to order at 6:06 by Dale Moquist following a devotion led by Janette Clausen on Weekly Worship from Power Surge. Worship is a verb – something we do, not a place we go.

Present: Dale Moquist, Dave Leighton, Pastor Casey, Craig Orton, Pastor Vanicek, Joan Leake, Janette Clausen, Chuck Wettstein, Kelly Martin, Kathy Nobles, Kimberly Sandman

Motion to approve consent agenda by Joan, seconded by Kelly. Passed unanimously.

There was some discussion by the Council as to the revision and updating of the church Bylaws. That process will begin in October or November.

The Church Sexton position is still open. Property committee will continue to resolve other issues related to the church sexton responsibilities.

Discussion and reception of goals from the committees: Worship, Congregational Care, Social Outreach, Stewardship, Faith Formation.

An update was received on the Facilities Planning Team with potential timelines for future events related to the facility improvements.

Council goals are available on the church website, along with Dale’s presentation.

Financial report from Dave: Attendance is up. Giving is still low, but due to the generosity of a few members, the bottom line is good. We are entering summer which traditionally brings months of low giving due to the variety of summer schedules. We are all encouraged to keep up our regular contributions.

Pastor Casey’s report: Many good things are happening, including Easter and the choir cantata, with Pentecost coming on June 4. A New Members Class is being held on May 21st with those attending joining in the next few weeks.

Pastor Vanicek’s report: He reported the confirmation class had 10 confirmands. He has been working on transitioning some of the youth work to Craig.

Craig Orton presented his thoughts and ideas about work with the youth.

Cindy Struchen’s report: Bible presentations on May 14th for the Walk Through the Bible Class. VBS plans are underway and registration is open. Cross+Generational Summer Sunday School is planned for June & July.

Full Staff and committee reports are available in the Church Office for review.

To continue in our quest to be a visioning Council, members should submit ideas to Dale for discussions at future Council meetings.

Received report from Pastor Vanicek and Dale on the Synod Assembly. Dale will give a Temple Talk and a bulletin insert with an overview will be shared on May 21st.

Motion to approve purchase of upgrade of Servant Keeper to version 8 Cloud at a cost of $249 for the upgrade and $49.99 per month. Motion comes from Congregational Care Committee. Second by Chuck Wettstein. Passed unanimously.

Email vote taken prior to the May meeting: The proposal is to use $2500 from the BIF fund to pay for the architectural design. The total cost will be

$12,000 but we already have $9500 in gifts approved for this use. Dave says BIF is financial strong and can do this. This was approved unanimously.

Meeting was closed with Moments of Gratitude and the Lord’s Prayer.

Respectfully submitted, Janette Clausen
