ROCK RIVER AREA OWLS Our local chapter 64 of the OWLS begins a new 2019-2020 season at St Mark's in Watertown
on the third Tuesday, September 17 at 1:30 PM. Our chapter president Rev Jim Lillo will present his experience
with "Starting the Hispanic Congregation in Anchorage, Alaska." Refreshments follow. Look for the exciting new OWLS
program schedule for 2019-2020 being distributed. Copies were handed out at the July picnic and will also be available
along with membership applications at meetings. This is also registration time for those who plan to attend the OWLS
NATIONAL CONVENTION to be convened this fall at Galena, Illinois October 7-9. Come and learn about us. Bring a

Blessed beyond anyone’s imagination over 25 years, by the end of 2018, gifts to the Lakeside Lutheran ministry totaled over $5 million.

Dear Members,
You might have noticed an easel on the cupboard in the back of church. On it are three names of missionaries:
Pastor Stephen Koelpin, Pastor Paul Seager and Staff Minister John Kramer. The Lutheran Women’s Missionary
Society assigns each circuit missionaries to “befriend” for a two year period. These three were assigned to the Rock
River Circuit. Each congregation then is assigned a specific month so the missionaries are remembered year round.
The best way to “befriend” them is to pray for them and the work they do. Birthdays and anniversaries are listed
to remember if so desired. Emails and addresses are listed to send a note of encouragement. In the month we are
assigned, which is September, our ladies aid usually sends a card and some sort of gift. Lately, we have been
sending gift cards for personal use as a way of showing our appreciation for the work they do four our Lord on our
behalf. So I encourage you to pray or send a note and if you would like to help with our gift feel free to contact any

🚌 Bus Drivers needed: please share! We are still actively seeking drivers for routes for THIS school year (Sun Prairie & Helenville routes), plus sports. We will train new drivers for the appropriate driver's license. If interested, apply as soon as possible by filling out the app at llhs.org. Return by mail, e-mail to [email protected] or drop off at the LL office. Staying after school, according to Principal Grasby Frequently, new parents want to know whether Lakeside students may remain after school to attend an athletic or other school event. The answer is yes. The Lakeside building provides a safe place for our students who wish to remain after school for our events. Students often walk downtown or ride with a schoolmate to eat at nearby fast-food restaurants. As long as our students behave in the community and also at school while waiting, we do not object to them staying. Typically, for home football games, the building closes at 6:30. It reopens at the end of the game for students to retrieve belongings and head home. Our desire is to lock the building shortly after the game. Notification system test Lakeside will conduct a test of its SwiftK12 instant notification system on Tuesday, September 3, 7 p.m. This test will feature a brief phone message from the Principal, as well as email and text messages. We do this to help you to determine that you are receiving our notifications at all the numbers and addresses you wish. Information on how to tailor your message choices was handed out at registration.
Needed: Thrivent members If you're a Thrivent member, you are eligible to apply for an "Action Team" grant of $250 that provides seed money for several booster, MPO and other groups' activities. Twice is Nice Resale Store Seasons keep rolling on, and while it seems just a short time since spring came around, August will bring the seasonal changeover at Twice is Nice Resale Store in Jefferson! Don’t miss great opportunities to shop, including the $4 bag sale from August 22-24. Changeover begins August 24 at 5 pm so that Monday, August 26 we have a brand new sales floor of fall and winter items for our shoppers. Changeover is a great night to meet and greet other volunteers. TiN provides tens of thousands of dollars in assistance that directly impacts your student here at LL. Think about it! Have you ever answered the phone and immediately known who you were speaking with? Even before they
identify themselves, we can often recognize our spouse, our children, or our parents just by the sound of their voice. We
are able to do so because of the relationship we share with such people – because we are so familiar with them.
It is this kind of familiar, intimate connection that Jesus speaks of having with us. The close relationship between
Savior and saint is something unknown elsewhere in human experience. Our Good Shepherd knows us – and by his grace
we know him!
As September arrives, all the changes that come every fall arrive with it: our children go back to school; college
students return to campus; Before long, schedules become packed with meetings, practices, appointments, and
obligations. For most, the return of fall means a return to a fast-paced, frantic lifestyle.
But do we sometimes let our busy lives interfere with our relationship with Jesus? As our phones and daily planners
fill up with all sorts of activities, do we find ourselves becoming less and less familiar with our Good Shepherd? Do we
find fewer opportunities to heed his call to repentance and faith? Does his voice sometimes get drowned out by the clamor
of the next big project or tomorrow’s assignments or next week’s activities? Who of us would not confess that we have
felt the temptation to “put Jesus on the back-burner” as our lives become more hectic?
Despite all this, God is faithful. Our Good Shepherd continues his call to return to him in repentance in faith. He
gently reminds us how well he knows us – he knows our faults, our flaws, and our weaknesses. He knows our sins, our
transgressions, and iniquity. And yet he loves us. He shows himself to be that Good Shepherd by laying down his life for
us. He willingly suffered the punishment we rightly deserved for those weaknesses and sins. He shows us the full extent
of his love by his sacrifice on the cross.
And now that faithful Savior – who knows you and loves you – is calling. With his gentle voice, he calls you to
worship where your faith will be fed and nourished by hearing his Word. With his gentle voice, he calls you to the altar
where you receive tangible assurance of his great love for you. With is gentle voice, he calls you to the many opportunities
offered at church for Bible Study where your relationship with him will be strengthened.
As September – and all its commitments and obligations arrive – hear the voice of Jesus calling. Make your
relationship with him a priority for yourself and your family. Be committed to faithful attendance at worship and bible
class. Begin (or continue) to have personal and family devotions. Find in Word and sacrament comfort and strength for
facing the trials of life. Your loving Savior is calling – follow your Shepherd’s voice and confidently believe.

Welcome Home Sunday
On October 13th, we are celebrating Welcome Home Sunday. We will talk about the importance of having the support of a Christian community. One major goal for this Sunday? We want to have 100% of our members in attendance. Let’s pack the house! Let’s see what that looks like, when every member comes together. Please do everything possible to set that date aside so you can join your brothers and sisters in Christ.
QUARTERLY VOTERS’ MEETING--AUGUST 4, 2019
The meeting was called to order by Vice-President Kevin Broedlow and opened with a prayer by Pastor Swanson. The minutes of the previous Quarterly and Special Voter meetings were approved as published. Financial Secretary Jim Lichtenberg reviewed the printed General Operating and Capital Fund reports. Church income totaled $269,300, this is 97.18% of the projected budget total for this period. Church attendance has averaged 123 for Sundays and 81 for Special services. The Capital Fund balance is $55,630 as of June 30. The Financial Sec. report was approved as read. Treasurer Kelly Vogel reviewed her printed financial reports. All church –school budget items have been covered for this six-month budget period, by a nice increase of offerings and ECC income compared to last year. Kelly then explained the new state-approved fiscal budget format which combines church and school financial accounts as required by the School Choice Program. Our new fiscal budget started July 1, 2019 and we will follow this budget format in the future. Treasurer’s Report was approved on a motion.
Pastor Swanson was very happy with VBS and thanked Mrs. Acker for setting up the start time to allow the Jefferson buses to drop off students. He is looking forward to the new school year starting. Bible classes will start the week after Labor Day.
Kelly Vogel reviewed Principal Winkler’s printed report. Thanks to Ron Heine, Jr. and Craig Winkler for cleaning and waxing the classrooms, gym and ECC rooms. Fourteen vouchers have been awarded for students in grades 4K through 6th. Five of the students are our own members who will reap the benefits of this program. The school room arrangements for next year will put 4K and 5K together, taught by Mrs. Swanson; Grades 1 & 2 taught by Mrs. Pautz; Grades 3-5 taught by Mrs. Acker and Grades 6-9 taught by Mr. Winkler. This arrangement adds full-time responsibilities to Mrs. Swanson who had recently accepted our call. On Friday, May 31st, six students from Jefferson High School volunteered for 2 hours cleaning the school walls and windows, straightening playground blocks, and spreading mulch. Four of them were St. Peter’s alumni; Tyler Danielson, Aidyn Messman, MacKenzie Mattke and Tim Walsh. Mrs. Erica Lembrich has agreed to direct Jr. Choir and provide extra student support this school year. Grades 4-8 will be in Jr. Choir. We are still looking for hot lunch and janitor help for the new school year. Included with Mr. Winkler’s report was a copy of ECC Director, Kayla Fry’s newsletter and August calendar. The school treasurer’s report was reviewed and accepted on a motion.
Elder Dan Stern asked for approval of transfer of membership to St. Peter’s for Tabitha Nehls from St. Mark’s (Watertown) and Jeannie Bishop from Trinity (Watertown). Motion carried. Membership transfer for Nancy Kanter to Zion, Rhinelander. Motion carried. Dan then announced the upcoming busy fall worship schedule: Sept. 22, Family Sunday with worship at school; October 13, Stewardship Welcome Home service; October 20, Lakeside Sunday; October 27, Reformation Sunday; November 3, Harvest Home; November 10, Mission Sunday.
Current needs for facility repairs are tree trimming around the teacherage and old school; and new upper roof and soffit repair on the teacherage. Pastor Swanson stated that the church picnic will be Sunday, August 25 at school following the Hawk Hustle at 9:00; 10:30 worship followed by potluck and family fun. Frank Kramer reported Legacy Fund totals $137,980 as of June 30. Vice President, Kevin Broedlow, reported that the Strategic Planning Committee will be scheduling a meeting soon.
New business: The November Budget Meeting will now take place in April 2020 because of the new fiscal budget. Pastor Swanson will meet with the Evangelism and Stewardship Committees to discuss finding a new chairman for them as Ray Schumacher has been transferred through a call. The next Quarterly Voter’s Meeting will be October 13 after the worship service. Being no further business, a motion was made and accepted to adjourn. We closed with the Lord’s Blessing.
