Another Christmas season is fast approaching! Which means the

children will be working and practicing hard to get ready for our annual

Christmas program Wednesday, December 24, 2014.

The Christmas program is titled “An Out of the Box Christmas.” We

will be looking for children to get involved and to attend as many Christmas

practices as possible. As in years past the children will be practicing the

songs during Sunday School time. Also please look for practice dates in this

news letter as well as the church bulletins. If you have any questions or would like to help in

any way let Vicky, Kris, or myself know.

A reminder there will be no Sunday School December 28, 2014 and January 4, 2015.

Sunday School will resume Sunday, January 11, 2015.

Thank you in advance for all the support and help from our shepherds, workshop leaders,

and parents. It is greatly appreciated.

Have a Merry Christmas and remember

“Jesus is the reason for the season.”

God Bless.

We’ll see everyone in the New Year.

A note from Mike…

The harvest season is wrapping up. We thank God for his many blessings. Good luck to all of our deer hunters. Have a safe and memorable hunt. Ann Krueger will be our new secretary and Sue Wobschall will be taking Ann’s position. We want to thank Vicky for a job well done and best wishes. Five positions will need to be filled this year for Church Council and Parish Ed. Remember this is our church and it takes people to run it. God will provide the training. As the weather gets colder and Christmas gets closer, let us all get the excitement as of a young child and be like the shepherds and the angles on that first Christmas night when the world saw a great light. Tell everyone we know about this child laying in a manger and invite them to church to hear the rest of the story. The story about God’s great love for us. Luke 2:10,11,17, “But the angle said to them do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the city of David a savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord. When they had seen him they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child.”

Your friend in Christ

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God, and the Communion of the Holy Spirit be with

you always!

Well, as you can tell, the change of the seasons is upon us. Once again, we have fallen victim to the

dreaded Polar Vortex which has dropped our daily temperatures about 20 degrees below normal. We have had

some snow; just enough to make travel treacherous for a few days. The deer are out in great numbers, although

I have yet to see one of the rare white deer. Thanksgiving is nigh, and with it the start of the Christmas season.

We can tell that it is the Christmas season. The seasonal decorations are out in abundance. Stores are

stocking up on merchandise for the rush, hustle and bustle of this time of year, and the news stories are replete

with speculation about which merchandiser, big box store, or vendor is going to be open earliest for Black

Friday. But Black Friday now has become Black Thanksgiving Day, or even earlier. It all tends to make us

kind of out of breath, winded, panting for respite.

Last night (November 19th

) the confirmation youth were gathered for one of their Theme Nights in our

study of the Lord’s Prayer. Our topic for discussion is what Martin Luther termed the Fourth Petition, “Give us

this day our daily bread.” In our discussion we spoke about what our daily bread is, how we can come to

recognize it, and then how we are to receive it with thanksgiving. We spoke about approaching this petition

from a ‘one day at a time’ perspective, how we can focus on the present, because it is a gift. Not a ‘present’ as

in a wonderfully wrapped and prepared package for giving from one to another, but the ‘present’ as in the here

and now. And as far as the second part of that saying, each day we live and receive from God is indeed a ‘gift,’

for tomorrow is promised to no one.

Taking one day at a time is difficult for us. We all look forward to future events, family gatherings,

sports contests, or, in my case, as I write this the Thursday before the Wisconsin Deer Gun opener, deer hunting

season. I look forward to it all year long, but anymore for me it is not about harvesting the deer, it is about

being in God’s creation for a few days in a row. Not that I would pass on a big, beautiful buck, but deer hunting

for me is about being in the woods with my son, and my brother, and seeing all that nature chooses to reveal.

So, taking one day at a time is difficult for me as well. That’s true for most of us. We anticipate, we

have expectations, we look forward, we prepare, and we, at times, long for something. But what is it that we

long for?

November 30th

is the first Sunday in Advent. Advent is a time of looking forward, of expectation, of

preparation for and the celebration and the observance of the coming of the Christ child into the world. We also

look forward to the eschatological second coming of Christ to the world. We confess our looking forward to the

return of Christ in our Creeds, and we read about it in the Bible. So maybe in that sense our looking forward to

a coming event is good, and even Christian.

We pray, in the Lord’s Prayer for God to give us our daily bread, what we need for today: food,

clothing, shelter, occupation, loving family and supportive relationships.

I think we could all benefit from, in certain cases, taking each day as it comes, and living into all that

day can bring us, for after all, each day is a gift.

I think that we could all benefit from taking one day at a time this Advent season, from not looking

forward too much to what is the busyness of the season, and resting in the comfort that is the wonderful coming

of the Christ child into the world.

I pray for all of you the blessedness that is this Advent season, and for each day that it not be too busy or

hectic. Let us all rest in what we need each day, and that is for Christ to come into our lives, for God to fill us

with God’s Spirit. This Advent season let us all abide in the truth that each day we are loved, and forgiven, and

grace-filled Children of God. Thanks be to God!

In Peace
