From Dark Depths to New Life In the monastery we weren’t allowed to capture it with our cameras, but the image has forever been captured in my mind. It’s hard to believe it’s been 13 years now since I viewed the Great Meteoron Monastery in Meteora, Greece. The image that so captured me was an uncommon one for us Western Christians. I remember my pastor, who was trav-eling with us, asking our guide to explain a bit about this elabo-rate and colorful fresco on the ceiling of the sanctuary. “Ah, she said, “That’s the Resurrection of Easter Saturday,” she explained. Although I was about to return to St. Peter’s and learn all about Easter Vigil through participation, I had never heard of Easter Saturday (even in seminary). I was absolutely intrigued! The first of the two-fold image showed Jesus descending

into the depths of hell and stretching out his hand to pull people up out of the devil’s clutches. The adjacent image showed Christ ascending from hell to heaven and shutting out the devil below forever. The Greek Orthodox Church calls this the Harrowing of Hell – the time when Christ brings the Good News of the resurrection to dead. This is the moment as we confess in the Apostles’ Creed that Christ “descended into hell/the dead.” Our tour guide reflected, “This is the most holy night for us in the Greek church. This was when the resurrection began be-fore the world even knew it! It reminds us that Christ is with us in our own dark depths and giving us new life.” In the darkness of night between Good Friday and Easter Morning, the resurrection bursts forth! In the darkness of our world between here and there, the resurrection bursts forth again and again! Alleluia!

- Blessed Easter Season, Pastor Casey

stewardship

As we wrap up another Lenten season and turn our focus to Easter celebrations, we are reminded once again of the glorious nature of Christ’s suffering and resurrection. As we traveled through the Lenten season together, I was constantly reminded of the various ways in which we can use our time, talents and treasures through St. Peter’s. Whether it was attending Sunday school, attending worship, attending a Lenten meal celebration, or attending a fundraiser for members of our church family, there was certainly no shortage of ways to give of ourselves during this season. As we move forward into the Easter season, reminders will remain with us of the various ways that our mem-bers have so willingly and freely contributed their time, talents and treasures. From teaching Sunday school to shar-ing stories of what it means to be Lutheran, there is something for everyone to be involved in and a great variety of activities to join. From quilting to guitar playing, whatever your talent may be, there is sure to be an outlet to share your gift(s) through St. Peter’s. During this Easter season, prayerfully consider where your talents, time and treasures may be utilized. Knowing this wonderful congregation, should a club/hobby/activity that you enjoy not exist, one will be created to serve the ministry of St. Peter’s. The outlets we currently have to allow our members to share their gifts are so numerous and seem to continue to expand based on the needs of the congregation. Whether through social networking, such as the Dinner Group, or serving the needs of the children of the community through Blessings in a Backpack, there truly is something for everyone at St. Peter’s. - In Christ, Mary Magerkurth, Stewardship Team Member

SUNDAYS: Adult Sunday School Class: Our new series, Living the Questions, is an open-minded alternative to studies that attempt to give participants all the answers and instead strives to create an environment where participants can interact with one another in exploring what's next for Christianity. LtQ2 features thirty acclaimed scholars, theologians and other experts, such as Marcus Borg, Brian McLaren, and Barbara Rossing. Join us at 9:30am Sunday mornings in Room

215 as we explore topics such as “Taking the Bible Seriously,” “Social Justice: Realizing God’s Vision,” and “Practicing

Resurrection.”

The final Lenten meal of the season was hosted by the Women of the ELCA. The tater tot casseroles were a big hit. Many thanks to all who helped with food preparation, setting up, serving and clean up. The Snip-its quilting group will be boxing up all of the quilts on Monday, April 6. These, along with many bars of soap collected by St. Peter’s school, will be shipped where most needed, by Lutheran World Relief. The women of the quilting group work diligently every year to send out over 100

quilts. Perhaps you had an opportunity to see, and pray over, the quilts a couple of Sundays ago. The quilters always welcome newcomers. If you can tie a knot or thread a needle, you can help. Call Judy Martin at 830-598-4249 for more information. Women of the ELCA Board will meet April 7, and our quarterly Business meeting will be April 14 at Hidden Falls Country Club at noon. Please be there! The business portion of the meeting is usually short, leaving time to enjoy a meal and fellowship with one another. Please, as you clean out closets and cabinets, box up your no longer needed "good stuff" for the rummage sale on October 8th. This sale is our biggest fund raiser, and volunteers are needed to make it as successful as it has been in past years. We work hard year round to give money to our church, community and world. We thank God for all of you help.

2015 Youth Extravaganza This February I had the opportunity to travel to Detroit, Michigan for the 2015 ELCA Extravaganza. The ELCA Youth Ministry Network is a network for youth workers, pastors and volunteers whose mission is to renew, educate and connect people who work with youth and families. The Extravaganza is an amazing conference that brings together a wide array of individuals from all over the country. I met several people from Chicago, North Dakota and California as well as many people from our own synod! Cindy Struchen and I were the St. Peter’s representatives, and I can honestly say it was a life changing experience. We returned with many great ideas, resources and fun stories!

Each day we had an opening and closing worship with several in-depth workshops in between. Some of the amazing workshops I attended were “Creation Care – Saving the Planet and our Souls”, “Creating Communities inclusive of Neurobehavioral Challenges in Children”, “Recognizing Spiritual Gifts in Children” and “Making God’s Story Pop, Jump and Stick”. The workshops were close to two hours in length and small groups, so you really had a chance to talk and ask lots of questions. The theme of the Extravaganza this year was “STORY”: God’s, Ours, Yours and Mine. There were approximately 1,100 people at this year’s event! Some were from large urban congregations with 3,500+ members (one church had 5 services each Sunday!) and some were from small rural congregations with less than 20 members. I met seasoned pastors and brand new volunteers (like me)! Everyone was so nice, open and willing to share. There was a cool vendor area were you could find out information on leadership programs, ELCA camps/ retreats, several different seminaries and different conferences available. Bishop Elizabeth Eaton spoke at one of the worship services and was an engaging, and often funny speaker! The Band Lost & Found was one of the many great entertainers at the Extravaganza, and they are coming to Marble Falls this fall! I am so excited for our youth to attend The Gathering this summer and I look forward to hearing how God has touched their lives. Blessings, Amanda Fancher

TheListeningTeam

In February the team met with Peggy Hahn of LEAD, a non-profit leadership and coaching service that began through the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod. Peggy helped us get a better understanding of our overall listening process: Listening Out to the community, Listening In to the congregation and Listening Up to God. She also gave helpful examples of other congregation who learned much from the listening out portion of their time. By building relationships with those in the community, each congregation learned of important ministry they could provide that they never realized was needed. Peggy also helped us be thinking about technical changes, which are easily done and often lead by experts, verses adaptive changes, which are much harder to make and require the whole congregation’s involvement. Adaptive changes are much more difficult because they often require us to step outside of the way “we’ve always” done things. Our listening process will likely require us to move into some adaptive changes, but we are excited and hope you will be too!

Over the next few months we will be focused on Listening Out, but we are always ready to listen to you. If you have an idea or question for the Listening Team please don’t hesitate to contact the members… (list from previous). Please also remember to hold this group and the work we are doing in your prayers.

Creation Care Sunday Creation Care Sunday Creation Care Sunday Creation Care Sunday ---- April 19thApril 19thApril 19thApril 19th

Earth Day is April 22nd. As Christians, we are called to care and love all of God’s creation. This includes helping those in need, but a Care of Creation Sunday also re-minds us that it includes finding ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Caring for God’s creation means being good stewards of our planet and its resources, and realizing that our life is connected to the life of all that God loves and has called into being. Our worship will take on a Care of Creation theme this Sunday. Elements of litur-

gy and song will be shaped by this theme. Pastor John Watson, the Executive Director of Fredericksburg SHINES will be joining us and preaching “Why Care for Creation?” Pastor Watson will also lead our adult Sunday School class and share some of his work with Fredericksburg SHINES and his home congregation’s free-cycling program.

In

Coping with Grief Support Group

Each Wednesday at 2:00pm through April 14thApril 14thApril 14thApril 14th

Grief is a highly unique experience for each individual in response, intensity, and duration.

For some, a significant loss or trauma may leave us feeling imbalanced, disorientated, and confused along

with feelings of sadness, anger, and loneliness that surface in grief. The world my feel like it has been

turned upside down. Grief can be an isolating experience and it may seem that there is no one who really “get’s it.” To help

explore possible answers and hope for healing, a “Coping with Grief Support Group” for friends and loved ones will be

meeting weekly at St. Peter’s at 2:00pm through April 14th.

Arlis Schmidt LCSW - Emeritus will facilitate the group. Ms. Schmidt is a retired licensed clinical social worker with

several years of experience of working with groups. Please call Ms. Schmidt at 210-326-7447 if you have questions or if you

would like to participate in the group. All who are dealing with the pain caused by the loss of a loved one are welcome.

Please bring salsa, chips, queso, guacamole, or other Mexican-inspired appetizer and a beverage of choice

to enjoy and share. Tea and water provided.

Peter's Lutheran Church Council Minutes February 17, 2015

The Church Council meeting was called to order by Craig Magerkurth at 5:30 PM. Present at the meeting were Craig Magerkurth, Richard Schroer, David Leighton, Julie Causgrove, Judy Haverlah, Jerry Bostick, Bryan Hicks, Pastor Casey, Pastor Vanicek, Kathy Noble, and Kimberly Sandman. Pastor Casey began the meeting by asking the council "What does together mean?" Some of the responses were gathering of like-minded people, pulling the rope in the same direction, not by myself, individual talent pooled, team, everybody working together, talents created to form one body. The minutes from the January meeting were presented. Pastor Vanicek stated a correction should be made with regard to the Web Site information adding that 26 people are using the PHONE APP. A motion to approve the minutes with the correction was made by Judy Haverlah and seconded by Bryan Hicks. The motion passed. The treasurer's report was given by David Leighton. Dave reported that expenses were quite high due to expenses that come due only in January. Income was in line with what was expected for January; however Building in Faith receipts were a little less than needed to make the mortgage payment. The BIF Fund, however, has a surplus to take care of shortfalls. A motion was made to accept the treasurer's report by Richard Schroer and seconded by Kimberly Sandman. Motion passed. A motion was made by Judy Haverlah and seconded by Julie Causgrove to accept orientation Minutes. Motion passed. It was pointed out by Pastor Casey, in her report, that installation of the 2015 Church Council would take place on February 22, in both services. Pastor Casey also stated that the new times for the Lenten Meals and Services would be at 5:30 for the meal and that the service would begin at 6:30. Preaching on March 4 will be Nick Bohmann, Mary Posey will preach on March 15, and Dr. Jay Alanis will preach on March 18. Pastor Casey reminded the council members that the council retreat would be held February 20-21. Pastor Vanicek gave his report and highlighted several items namely; he and Dan Posey co-hosted a telescope clinic in the fellowship hall, that the Souper Bowl of Caring had generated $935.24, and that the phone app is up and running and has 40 users as of February 16, 2015. Pastor Vanicek met with PEC reps and started an Energy Audit of our main facility. And last but not least, the SPLAT Valentine Silent Auction Fundraiser raised $5,300. Both Pastors complete reports are available upon request. In business items, a motion to approve Marshall Wilde as our new Sexton was made by Richard Schroer and seconded by Judy Haverlah. Motion Passed. A motion was then made to give the Pastors discretional power to raise the Sexton's pay by $50 at a later date by Richard Schroer and seconded by Julie Causgrove. Motion Passed. The next item to be discussed was to approve a Purchasing Supply Agent. A motion to approve Allison Wurfel as Purchasing Supply Agent was made by Richard Schroer an seconded by Judy Haverlah. Motion Passed. The ladies of WELCA requested that the Church Council approve an expenditure of $400-500 for the purchase of new tablecloths. A motion was made to grant the request with the money to be taken from future needs funds, by Kathy Noble and second-ed by Kimberly Sandman. Motion Passed. The Cub Scout Pack #284 has a need for use of 16 tables and a motion to approve was made by Julie Causgrove and seconded by Judy Haverlah to approve the use. Motion Passed. Several items were presented by the Property Committee. Costs for taking the pews out of the sanctuary, stripping the floor, polishing and buffing of the tile floor, and replacing the pews, all to be done over a 2 week time frame is $5,760. This does not include the janitor's cost estimated to be about $1,100-1,200. No action was taken. Also up for discussion was window washing of the Commons and Narthex. Richard Schroer reported this had been done at a cost of $100. Richard Schroer also stated that he had a quote for a new vacuum for the janitor that would cost slightly over $600. A motion to purchase the vacuum at a cost not to exceed $650 was made by Kathy Nobles and seconded by Jerry Bostick. Motion Passed. The Child Protection and Policy Committee will be meeting sometime after Easter. Faithfully submitted, Richard L. Schroer
