A REFLECTION FROM AARON KELLY, THE SEMINARIAN WHO HAS BEEN ASSISTING FR. VAN LIESHOUT AND HELPING OUT IN OUR PARISH THIS SUMMER
Dear Friends in Christ, As a nation, we have just come off of our annual Fourth of July celebrations, a time when we are led to think about those things that we hold dear as Americans – rights, freedom, and opportunity. However, when it comes to the notion of freedom, we seem to have an improper understanding of what freedom truly is. Our understanding of freedom has become distorted by relativism and individualism. We now hear things such as: “You do you” or “You can do whatever you want, so long as it doesn’t affect me and my freedom.” Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, in the homily he gave at the outset of the conclave that elected him as Pope Benedict XVI, warns against a “Dictatorship of Relativism.” He writes: “Relativism, that is, letting oneself be ‘tossed here and there, carried about by every wind of doctrine’, seems the only attitude that can cope with modern times. We are building a dictatorship of relativism that does not recognize anything as definitive and whose ultimate goal consists solely of one's own ego and desires.” Freedom, when it is rooted in relativism and focuses only on oneself, leads to a reality in which we are not really free, but become slaves to our every desire. What, then, is true freedom? The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines freedom as, “the power, rooted in reason and will, to act or not to act, to do this or that, and so to perform deliberate actions on one’s own responsibility” (1731). So yes, freedom does involve a choice, BUT true freedom is a choice for something. What is that something? The Catechism continues, “[Freedom] attains its perfection when directed towards God, our beatitude. . . . The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes. There is no true freedom except in the service of what is good and just. The choice to disobey and do evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to ‘the slavery of sin’” (1731 and 1733). If we want to experience true freedom, we must choose to do the good and we must ultimately make the choice for God. When we continually make the choice for the good, live virtuously, and live for God we experience a taste of the beatitude (happiness) that is experienced in heaven by all the saints. In short, our freedom is not one of indifference, where we choose whatever we want, whenever we want, but rather, our freedom is for excellence, in which we choose the good and ultimately God himself. As St. Paul says, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1). In these days, when there is a temptation to follow the ideologies that say freedom means I can do whatever I want, whenever I want, and however I want, remember that true freedom comes from a continuous choice of the good and relationship with God. I will conclude, again, with the words of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger: “We, however, have a different goal: the Son of God, the true man. He is the measure of true humanism. An ‘adult’ faith is not a faith that follows the trends of fashion and the latest novelty; a mature adult faith is deeply rooted in friendship with Christ. It is this friendship that opens us up to all that is good and gives us a criterion by which to distinguish the true from the false, and deceit from truth.” Pax et bonum,
Aaron Kelly
“Every generation of Americans needs to know that freedom consists not in doing what we like,
but in having the right to do what we ought.” John Paul II from his 1995 Apostolic Journey to the United States

ADULT ED LECTURE - SAVE THE DATE!
Join our Seminarian Aaron Kelly on Zoom for a lecture entitled “Who Am I?” this Wednesday, July 15th from 7:00-8:30pm. The lecture will look at what it means to be authentically human in a time when there seems to be a crisis regarding the meaning of personhood. We will explore the thought of various philosophers and theologians to try to arrive to an answer of the question, “Who Am I?”
The link to the lecture will posted next week on our web-site and Facebook page.
In the four weeks following the lecture, for those who are interested, there will be a series of one hour follow-up sessions that will look at various aspects of authentic personhood more in depth.
July 22nd – I am made for relationship. July 29th – I am made for the good life. August 5th – I am made for wisdom. August 12th – I am made to be in relationship with God.
Please join us for at least the first lecture and then for any or all of the classes to follow. A great way to get to know our seminarian better!

PUBLIC MASSES AT ST. PETER’S PARISH Just like at other Catholic Churches throughout the Diocese, we continue to celebrate public Masses here in our parish. We encourage everyone, who is desirous to return to the celebration of Holy Mass, to come. We have plenty of room to assure that we maintain social-distancing.
For those who may not be aware: 1) Masks are required to be worn for the duration of Mass. 2) Holy Communion will be distributed after Mass in a slower manner that will allow Father & Deacon Bob to purify and
sanitize their hands in between Communicants as needed.
We understand that there are those within in our parish who, due to health concerns, should not return to Mass and/or who do not feel safe doing so. We remind these folks that Catholics in the Diocese of Rochester are still dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass.
