PENSAMIENTOS DE NUESTRO PARROCO PASTORS PONDERINGS

Dear Parishioners, This Sunday we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Easter, which is always “Good Shepherd Sunday,” and while we’re of course reminded that JESUS is our Good Shep-herd, nonetheless it is an opportune moment to reflect on how leadership at the parish, and yes, particularly that of the Pastor, is going ;-). This year we have the added challenge that due to the COVID-19 crisis the Church across the world is dis-persed to parishioners’ homes and Mass as well as most other pastoral services is being done “from a distance.” While one could write a glowing account of wonderful things that we’ve done here at St. Philip Benizi, both before the onset of this crisis and since, we did have a necessarily corrective Parish Pastoral Council Meeting this Monday, and it’s clear that the experience of a fair number of our parishioners has been one of separation during this time. So yes, we’re looking hard to change that. While I continue to believe that Facebook is a remarka-bly simple and versatile platform to throw information (and there’s a lot of it) in all shapes and sizes (from arti-cles to pictures, to invites to all kinds of activities) onto our FB Page, it won’t reach those who are not on there. SO … we’re playing with creating a blog spbfullerton-eng.blogspot.com onto which once again at least an edi-tor / administrator could throw everything under the sun to keep people informed. In the case of Facebook, one doesn’t really even need that editor / administrator (but one needs to have an account on Facebook…). Parish-ioners themselves can throw things onto our page them-selves. (If we don’t like it, we can take it down, but most people are generally nice, so it’s not really a prob-lem). Anyway, we want to make sure that a Parish that has 1850 people attending Mass each Sunday, and 1250 reg-istered families, remains one, even in this current situa-tion, which is connected and everyone does feel heard, valued and loved. So then, just know that we are honestly trying our best, and that even when we fail, it only underlines the truth, that our Good Shepherd is Jesus, and we are his serv-ants / followers. May God bless you all, -- Fr. Dennis

IN NEED OF A SHEPHERD

SAINT OF THE WEEK

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

For a while it was very fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surrounding these creatures informed us that they were—contrary to their popular image—very clean animals, and also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of domestic vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely defenseless when left on their own, even in large numbers. The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a particularly flattering one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unflat-tering image can reinforce our faith. Until we come to a pro-found realization of how much we need a shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shepherd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might follow him in faith forever. SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES May 3

Call Philip the gospel’s “Answer Man.” “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathaniel asked Philip, who had pro-claimed Jesus “the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets” (John 1:45). Jesus asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” (John 6:5). Greeks brought Philip their request: “We would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Philip’s answer to each question: bring people to Jesus! At the Last Supper, finally, Philip had a request of his own: “Show us the Father!” (John 14:8). Jesus had three last ques-tions for Philip: “You still don’t know me? How can you ask that? Don’t you believe?” And an answer: “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:10). Today’s James is not John’s brother, Zebedee’s son, but, tradition says, author of the New Testament Letter of James, who died praying for his mur-derers in Jesus’ words: “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Few historical details for either saint, but lessons aplenty: Bring every question we have and everybody we meet to Jesus; be, as James’ letter challenges, “doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SANTOS FELIPE Y SANTIAGO (Siglo I) 3 de mayo

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
