CHRIST: THE FULFILLMENT OF THE LAW

Do not suppose that I have come to abolish the Law...but to ful-fill it (Mat. 5:17). Jesus is saying that he is not just another hu-man being who wants to do away with God’s Law. ( Nip such thought in the bud!) we might say that Jesus is the religious psy-chologist, par excellence. He is proclaiming that the external ob-

servances of the Law does not go far enough. Christ is proclaiming the primacy of the interior being of man, namely, the heart. (This flies in the face of the Jewish religious establishment. For the en-tire Jewish tradition is based on the conviction that God Himself is the Author of the Law.) Christ’s coming is the unique historical descent from the bosom of the Father. He is the coming of the Divine Word, the very source of the Law of God unto the midst of humanity, into the very geog-raphy of the world. In response to Him, humanity’s passionate nature requires us to venture farther than the conventional. True religious passion must sink it’s roots into the mind of God. (The Law was for the Jews the unique expression of the divine plan.) For the Jews the Law was proof that they as a nation were special in the eyes of God. No one be-fore them had been admitted to the intimacy of God’s own thoughts. Therefore, for Jesus, fulfilling the Law does not so much mean keeping every detailed precept as it means bringing to full fruition the seeds, promises and truths that were contained in the Law of the Old Testament at a more em-bryonic stage. Jesus is himself the innermost meaning of the Law and it’s intention. The relationship between Christ and the Law is not one of servant (Christ) to master (the Law), but of Lord to His Word. His presence somehow makes the intention of the Law abundantly clear and beyond doubt. ( Yet even today some Christians are stuck in the external observances of Christ’s message rather than the heart and spirit of the Gospel.) The crux of the matter here, coming from Jesus’ mouth, is not a legalistic insistence upon the ob-servance of external laws but our basic attitude toward Revelation. And Jesus is the fullness of that Revelation in the flesh. He reveals to us the Father’s mind and heart. For Jesus is the mind and heart of the Father. ( This doesn’t mean He tells us in black and white what to do in every situation. He has given us intelligence and free will. But most importantly He has given us His very own Spirit.) In applying what he means, Jesus says to us: “Unless your justice surpasses that of the Scribes and the Pharisees you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven” (Mat. 5:20). Surpassing their justice means an overabundance in us that internally deepens the sense of the Law and traces it back to it’s very source in the will and the heart of God. Jesus is talking about breathing the very life of His Spirit into all the commandments because He Himself is the embodiment of the Law. Crucial to what Jesus is saying is to often ask ourselves: “What would Jesus do?” But for us to even ask this question implies that we have a dy-namic, faith-filled, loving and intimate relation-ship with Him. Let us pray and pray hard this week and even throughout the Lenten Season for this dynamic relationship so that we may ac-quire the mind and heart of Christ.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is for adults who de-sire to become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. The goal of the process is full, conscious and active participation in an exciting life with Jesus within the Catholic Church. RCIA helps adults grow in their relationship with God, become familiar with Catholic teachings and practices, get acquainted with the faith community and get involved in service within the community. Many people who want to join the Catholic Church have already been baptized in another Christian Church. They do not need to be rebaptized. They participate in the process with those never baptized to famil-iarize themselves with the Roman Catholic Tradition. Others may have been baptized in the Catholic Church and need to complete the sacraments of initiation by receiving First Eu-charist and/or Confirmation. If you know of someone who might be interested in learning more about RCIA, please con-tact Darleen Farland at [email protected].
