St. Priscilla Parish Family
St. Priscilla Parish Mission Statement
We, the people of St. Priscilla Parish, grounded in the Word of God and
Sacred Tradition, find strength and joy in the transforming power of Christ's sacrificial
love as manifested in the Eucharist. We commit ourselves to lifelong spiritual
formation, compassionate service, evangelization and the generous sharing of
God’s gifts with our parish family and the community at large.
We invite people from all cultures and walks of life to join us in our faith journey.
Fr. Theo’s Thoughts
“ The Lord has anointed me….to bring glad tidings .” Is 61:1
As we move nearer to the celebration of the Christmas season,
there are surely people we know - if not ourselves - who find it
difficult to get into the spirit that is all around at this time of
year, and to which this weekend’s readings deeply call us.
Those poor who have been looking for jobs for month after
month; those broken hearted who are missing a loved one who
has died, those held captive by haunting memories or
addictions; those poor on our city streets; those brokenhearted
who have been rejected, unforgiven, alienated; those held
captive by illness, worry fears…..
In today’s world, it is easy to wonder, to ask many questions
and become disengaged. But today’s reading challenge us to
shape a new creation, to rejoice, to pray and give thanksgiving.
The readings of this weekend have several significant themes
within them. One of them has to do with identity; John the
Baptist’s identity, Christ’s identity, as well as yours and my
identity. John clearly knew who he was not, as well as an
inspired grasp of who he was.
Let us ask ourselves what is the Spirit of the Lord anointing
me to do right now? What one thing can I do this week to bring
glad tidings to others?
Peace, Fr. Theo

Prayer Shawl
Supplies
St. Priscilla’s is
blessed to have
volunteers who
crochet or knit
“prayer shawls” for hospice
patients at Angela Hospice. Shawls
are given to patients after they
have been blessed, with a prayer
for comfort and peace. Sr. Pat has
told us the transformation of the
patients upon receiving the shawls
is astounding.
We don’t want to lose this vital
ministry, but our volunteers are in
need of yarn. 4-6 ply, any color,
and they will create a blessing for
those who are on their final
journey. Thank you.
Mass Intention Requests
The Basilian Priests are looking
for Mass intention requests that
can be celebrated immediately or
at your preference. Please drop
your requests and stipends in an
envelope and we will give them to
Fr. Wheeler. Thank You.
Christmas Offering
Just a reminder: your
Christmas contribution is
kept here at the parish and
there is NO 7% Diocesan tax
on it. Thank you.

St. Vincent de Paul CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE
The St. Priscilla Conference of the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul (SVDP) will once again sponsor the Christmas

in need. The “Giving Tree” is set up in the back of church. The
ornaments on the tree have boy/girl and age written on them. Please take
an ornament and purchase a new toy, an item of clothing, or other gift, and
return the unwrapped gift (with the ornament attached) under the “Giving
Tree”. All gifts must be received no later than Sunday
morning, December 18

on tables for parents to select as Christmas presents for their
children that day.

organized by the Boy Scout troop which meets here, we will
also to provide groceries for each family at Christmas, as we did before
Thanksgiving.
Retirement Fund for
Religious
Elderly Catholic sisters, brothers,
and religious order priests need
your help. For years, these selfless
women and men ministered for
little, if any, compensation -
educating the young, nursing the
sick, promoting justice and peace.
Their sacrifices now leave a
substantial gap in retirement
savings. Your gift to the
Retirement Fund for Religious
provides vital funding for
prescription medications, nursing
care, and more. Please Share in the
Care and give to those who have
given a lifetime.
An envelope is included with
your monthly mailing. There are
additional envelopes at the doors
of the church. Please be generous.

Words of Worship:
PEACE
Notice the frequency of the use of the word Peace, in
the liturgy. One of the greetings at the beginning of the
Liturgy of the Word is: “The grace and peace of God
our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.” After we pray the Our
Father: Peace is included six times and followed by the Sign of Peace
which we give to one another. Then we pray that the Lamb of God
“...grant us peace” and we are dismissed with the very word we have
prayed so often in our worship: “Go in the peace of Christ”. Peace occurs
in the prayers of the liturgy of the Eucharist many other times; it must be
important!
Is peace merely absence of violence and hostility: What are some of
the connections of this beautiful word- a word which seems to satisfy a
deep but unidentified desire within us?
The Hebrew word which is translated as peace is shalom and this word
embodies ideas of harmony, friendship and the perfect enjoyment of God’s
world. To wish someone peace is to speak of your hope for inner
contentment and rest from all anxiety. (“protect us from all anxiety” - let
trust replace worry!) When Jesus enters the upper room, his first words are
“Peace be with you.” Can you imagine the relief and joy which flooded the
hearts of the Apostles when they heard this greeting? The Risen Lord
himself blesses them with the greatest gift of all - his presence.
So - look carefully at each prayer that includes the word peace and
carry that peace with you as you return to your home and family. “Let
there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”
- Mary Rice

Today’s Gospel reports “there
is one among you whom you do
not recognize.” It is hard to be-
lieve Christ is present in a family
with crazy schedules, suppers
that start too late and end too
early, cars that don’t start, mis-
understandings, frustrations,
piles of laundry, unmatched socks
and stretched food budgets. The
list is endless. The words spoken
at Mass, “The Lord is with you,”
are not a hope, they are a fact.

What Everyone Should Know and Do
Snort, Sniffle, Sneeze, No Antibiotics, Please!
Are you aware that colds, flu, most sore throats, and bronchitis are
caused by viruses? Did you know that antibiotics do not help fight viruses?
Plus, taking antibiotics when you have a virus may do more harm than
good. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of
getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
If You Have a cold or Flu, Antibiotics Won’t Work for You!
Antibiotics cure bacterial infections, not viral infections such as
Colds or flu
Most coughs and bronchitis
Sore throats not caused by strep; or
Runny noses
Taking antibiotics for viral infections, such as a cold,
cough, the flu, or most bronchitis, will not:
Cure the infections
Keep other individuals from catching the illness
Help you feel better
What Can You Do to Protect Yourself or Your Child?
When you use antibiotics appropriately, you do the best for your health,
your family’s health, and the health of those around you. “We want
Americans to keep their families and communities healthy by getting
smart about the proper use of antibiotics,” said Lauri Hicks, D.O> Medical
director of CDC’s Get Smart campaign.
What To Do
Talk with your healthcare provider about antibiotic resistance.
When you are prescribed an antibiotic
Take it exactly as the doctor tells you. Complete the prescribed
course even if you are feeling better. If treatment stops too soon, some
bacteria may survive and re-infect you.
This goes for children, too. Make sure your children take all
medications as prescribed, even if they feel better.
* Throw away any leftover medication once you have completed your
prescription.
What Not to Do
Antibiotics cure bacteria, not viruses such as:
 Colds or flu
Most coughs and bronchitis
Sore throats not caused by strep
Runny noses
