“PASSIONTIDE” AND HOLY WEEK -Today is the Fifth Sunday of Lent.
Traditionally, it is the beginning of Passiontide which consists of
the last two weeks of Lent and runs from today to the Easter Vigil.
These last few days of Lent call for a more intense period of
prayer and preparation as we await Holy Week and especially the
Sacred Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. You will
notice, for instance, that the images in the church are now veiled.
The rubrics of the Church call for all images to be veiled from the
Vigil of the 5th Sunday of Lent until the beginning of the Easter
Vigil. Crosses are veiled from the Vigil of the 5th Sunday of Lent
until the Liturgy of Good Friday. The purpose is to help us focus
more clearly upon the mysteries of the Passion, Death and
Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It also brings about a more
solemn atmosphere in the church calling to mind the darkness of the
Passion and Death of Jesus. At the Easter Vigil, a dramatic
transformation takes place as the church itself is transformed from
darkness to light and sadness to joy. The Sacred Liturgy is always
a great teacher and this is especially true during the liturgies of
Holy Week. Palm Sunday – Next Sunday is Palm Sunday which marks the
beginning of Holy Week and Our Lord’s trium-phant entrance into
Jerusalem. At all Masses we will have the Solemn Entrance and
blessing of palms. Parking is always a challenge on Palm Sunday so
I urge you to come early to Mass. The parking area located to the
west of the Parish Hall will also be opened for additional parking.
Sacred Triduum – keep your calendar open for Holy Thursday evening
(4/18/19) and Good Friday afternoon (4/19/19) so you can
participate fully in the beautiful Liturgies of Holy Week. More
details next Sunday. Penance Services – Our Parish Penance Service
will take place on Tuesday of Holy Week, April 16th at 7:00 p.m.
There will also be additional Confession times provided throughout
Holy Week. The schedule was mailed to you this past week and will
also be included in next Sunday’s bulletin in a special insert.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS – Don’t forget this beautiful Lenten devotion
of the Way of the Cross. We pray the Stations here at St. John
Chrysostom’s each Friday of Lent at 6:45 p.m. in Spanish and at
7:30 p.m. in Eng-lish. This coming Friday will be our last evening
Stations as the following Friday is Good Friday and we will pray
the Stations that day at 12:00 p.m. in English and at 6:30 p.m. in
Spanish. REDESIGNED IMAGES - You will notice that the images of the
Patriarchs (Adam, Abel, Melchizedek, Abra-ham, Moses and David)
have been redesigned. The original of these images were not in the
same “neo-Beuronese” style of art which is found in the rest of the
artwork in the sanctuary so the artist who did them has redesigned
them completely. I think you will find them quite beautiful. One of
these images, that of Melchize-dek, is still not sponsored. Also,
one of the female saints in the mural above the altar is still not
sponsored. If you are interested in either of these sponsorships,
please contact me at [email protected]. Over the next few weeks we
hope to be able to complete the new Guadalupe chapel and the new
Divine Mercy chapel as well. NEW YOUTH GROUP FOR GIRLS- I am very
pleased to announce that our parish has formed a new All Girls
Spiritual Group. It is called “Guardians of Virtue” and is open to
all girls ages 12-17. It’s purpose is spiritu-al growth, devotion
to the Blessed Virgin Mary, service to the parish, etc. They will
have a variety of events such as outings, mission tours, visiting
the sick, movie nights, special devotions, etc. The first official
meeting was last week and over 30 girls showed up! A great success!
For several years we have had our Knights of the Altar pro-gram for
boys and I am very pleased that now we have a program for the girls
as well. If you have a daughter in the designated age range please
encourage her to join. They meet every 2nd and 4th Wednesday in

“PASIONADA” Y SEMANA SANTA: Hoy es el quinto domingo de
Cuaresma. Tradicionalmente, es el comienzo de Pasionada, que
consiste en las últimas dos semanas de Cuaresma y se extiende desde
hoy hasta la Vigilia Pascual. Estos últimos días de Cuaresma
requieren un período más intenso de oración y preparación mientras
esperamos la Semana Santa y especialmente el Triduo Sagrado: Jueves
Santo, Viernes Santo y Semana Santa. Notará, por ejemplo, que las
imágenes en la iglesia ahora están cubiertas. Las rúbricas de la
Iglesia exigen que todas las imágenes queden ocultas desde la
Vigilia del 5º domingo de Cuaresma hasta el comienzo de la Vigilia
de Pascua. Las cruces están veladas desde la vigilia del quinto
domingo de Cuaresma hasta la liturgia del Viernes Santo. El
propósito es ayudarnos a enfocarnos más claramente en los misterios
de la Pasión, la Muerte y la Resurrección de Nuestro Señor
Jesucristo. También provoca una atmósfera más solemne en la iglesia

boletín del próximo domingo en un folleto especial. EL VIA CRUCIS-
No olvide esta hermosa devoción cuaresmal del Vía Crucis. Rezamos
el Via Crucis aquí en San Juan Crisóstomo cada viernes de Cuaresma
a las 6:45 p.m. en español y a las 7:30 p.m. en inglés. El próximo
viernes será la ultima Estación nocturna, ya que el próximo viernes
es Viernes Santo y rezaremos las Estaciones ese dia a las 12:00 p.m
en ingles y a las 6:30p.m en español. IMÁGENES REDESIGNADAS –Notará
que las imágenes de los patriarcas (Adán, Abel, Melquisedec,
Abraham, Moisés y David) se han rediseñado. El original de estas
imágenes no estaba en el mismo estilo de arte "neo-Beuronese" que
se encuentra en el resto de las obras de arte en el santuario, por
lo que el artista que las hizo las rediseñó por com-pleto. Creo que

DE JUVENTUD PARA NIÑAS - Me complace anunciar que nuestra parroquia
ha formado un nuevo Grupo espiritual de niñas. Se llama "Guardianas
de la virtud" y está abierto a todas las niñas de 12 a 17 años. Su
propósito es el crecimiento espiritual, la devoción a la Santísima
Virgen María, el servicio a la parroquia, etc. Tendrán una variedad
de eventos tales como salidas, visitas misioneras, visitas a los
enfermos, noches de cine, devociones especiales, etc. La primera
reunión oficial fue la semana pasada y más de 30 chicas
aparecieron! ¡Un gran éxito! Durante varios años hemos tenido
nuestro programa de Caballeros del Altar para los niños y me
complace mucho que ahora también tengamos un programa para las
