FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners, I am not sure if all of you have heard that Elizabeth Ciro, the director of our Food Pan-try, had to permanently move upstate rather suddenly. A few months back, her husband Nestor went into rapid cognitive decline and wan-dered off from home a few times. He was then placed in custodial care in the Bronx. Elizabeth’s son and his wife (a nurse) invited and urged Elizabeth to move in with them upstate in Schenectady. Nestor will be placed in a facility a few minutes away, and Eliza-beth’s daughter-in-law has promised to settle her in a new parish—and a new Food Pantry—near her new abode. Elizabeth and Nestor have lived in our neighborhood for about forty years, and she has always had multiple involvements at St. Raphael’s: not only the Food Pantry (which she has coordinated for more than a dozen years), but also the Religious Education program, prayer groups, Bible Study, Communion ministry, etc. She was formally trained in Pastoral Ministry at the diocesan level. We will miss her talents and presence, and regret the way her life (and ours!) has been upended so unexpectedly, but we wish her well in her new home. Last Saturday, the Pantry volunteers scrambled to give her a farewell luncheon. You can see a photo or two of the event elsewhere in this bulletin. Next weekend we will have our Annual Summer Mission Appeal. Updated info about the beneficiary community is in this bulletin. I say ―updated‖, because the priest originally set to visit us had a personal tragedy (the death of his mother) that necessitated his return to the Philippines. Instead, Father Gregorio Domilies will take his place. Father Gregorio was born in the Philippines and ordained a priest in 1992. He has been a missionary in Camaroon (Africa), the Philippines, and Papua (New Guinea). He is currently ministering in the parish of San Marcos Evangelista in El Petén in Guatemala. The second collection next weekend (Aug. 11th/12th) is for the summer missionary. I know our people will, as in the past, be generous towards these missionary priests who jour-ney with migrants in multicultural settings, build inclusive communities of faith, and promote the values of Jesus and his Gospel. -Father Jerry Jecewiz

SUMMER MISSION APPEAL AT ST RAPHAEL’S

NEXT WEEKEND—AUGUST 11th AND 12th

TO BENEFIT THE ‘MISSIONARIES OF JESUS”

The Missionaries of Jesus (MD) is an international and multicultural religious missionary community. It was founded in the Philippines on June 12, 2002 by a group of 41 men called and inspired by the mission and humanity of Jesus, who calls us to ―make disciples of all nations‖ (Mt 28:19). They call themselves ―friends and disciples‖. It is their desire to gather more friends and co-disciples. Their objective is the promotion of the universality of the Christian message through presence (witness and dialogue alike), proclamation and prayer. Their missionis to unveil the real face of Jesus hidden in our brothers and sis-ters in the mountains, in the plains, in the forest, in the city where we live and work. They minister in the Philippines (Antipolo, Modesta, Cubao, Baguio, Davao, Digos, Lanao, Lubang Islands); in Papua, New Guinea (lae); in Guatemala (Tierra Blanca); and in the USA (Los Angeles and Washington, DC). One of their priorities is to work and live with indigenous people for the pur-poses of relief and health care, for education (literacy programs), and for pastoral work (catechetical formation). The appeal will be made here by Father Gregorio Domilies, who was born in the Philippines and ordained a priest in 1992. He has served as a missionary in Camaroon (Africa), the Philippines, and Papua (New Guinea). He now works in a parish in El Petén, Guatemala.

The second collection on the weekend of August 11th and 12

th is for the Mis-

sionaries of Jesus. Be aware there is no specific envelope in the parish support en-

velopes for this. For exchange purposes, checks should be made out to ST. RAPH-

AEL CHURCH, with the notation ―Summer Mission Appeal‖. Your support is appre-

ciated!

AROUND OUR PARISH

LEFT: Our July 28th Spanish retreat, organ-ized by our Pastoral Ministers and Vino Nuevo Apostolate, drew a packed house, such that the 50 or so children present had to be relo-cated to the rectory basement. Despite the heat of the day, all were refreshed and re-newed. Thanks to the Apostolate, who do-nated $1200 to the parish, and about the same community of the visiting priest who did the presentation.
