CHURCH PROCLAIMS MARY MOTHER OF GOD

Pope John Paul II The Council of Ephesus taught that Mary is truly the Mother of God, since she gave birth to the Sec-ond Person of the Trinity who became man for our sake The Church "also contemplates with wonder and celebrates with veneration the immense greatness conferred on Mary by the One who wanted to be her Son", the Holy Father said at the General Audi-ence of Wednesday, 27 November, as he dis-cussed the Blessed Virgin's title "Mother of God". Here is a translation of his catechesis, which was the 37th in the series on the Blessed Mother and was given in Italian. 1. Contemplation of the mystery of the Saviour's birth has led Christian people not only to invoke the Blessed Virgin as the Mother of Jesus, but also to recognize her as Mother of God. This truth was already confirmed and perceived as belonging to the Church's heritage of faith from the early centu-ries of the Christian era, until it was solemnly pro-claimed at the Council of Ephesus in 431. In the first Christian community, as the disciples became more aware that Jesus is the Son of God, it became ever clearer that Mary is the Theotókos, the Mother of God. This is a title which does not appear explictly in the Gospel texts, but in them the "Mother of Jesus" is mentioned and it is af-firmed that Jesus is God (Jn 20:28; cf. 5:18; 10:30, 33). Mary is in any case presented as the Mother of Emmanuel, which means "God with us" (cf. Mt 1:22-23).

At the beginning of this New Year we are called to renew ourselves as a peo-

ple of peace. In a world seemingly in constant vio-lence Pope Francis and our Blessed Mother Mary help us to understand that true peace only comes from justice; justice can only come through the sacri-fice of love. Let our New Year’s resolution be to recommit ourselves to the joy and the struggle of loving as Je-sus loves us. As missionaries all let us bring that love to family, friends and all peoples of every culture wherever the Gospel leads us throughout this new year! Happy New Year! Fr. Dan —————————————————————- Fiftieth World Day of Peace –Pope Francis

At the beginning of this New Year, I offer heartfelt wishes of peace to the world’s peoples and nations, to heads of state and government, and to religious, civic and community lead-ers. I wish peace to every man, woman and child, and I pray that the image and likeness of God in each person will ena-ble us to acknowledge one another as sacred gifts endowed with immense dignity. Especially in situations of conflict, let us respect this, our “deepest dignity”, and make active non-violence our way of life.

This is the fiftieth Message for the World Day of Peace. In the first, Blessed Pope Paul VI addressed all peoples, not simply Catholics, with utter clarity. “Peace is the only true direction of human progress – and not the tensions caused by ambitious nationalisms, nor conquests by violence, nor repressions which serve as mainstay for a false civil order”. He warned of “the danger of believing that international con-troversies cannot be resolved by the ways of reason, that is, by negotiations founded on law, justice, and equity, but only by means of deterrent and murderous forces.” Instead, cit-ing the encyclical Pacem in Terris of his predecessor Saint John XXIII, he extolled “the sense and love of peace found-ed upon truth, justice, freedom and love”. In the interven-ing fifty years, these words have lost none of their signifi-cance or urgency.

On this occasion, I would like to reflect on nonviolence as a style of politics for peace. I ask God to help all of us to culti-vate nonviolence in our most personal thoughts and values. May charity and nonviolence govern how we treat each other as individuals, within society and in international life. When victims of violence are able to resist the temptation to retali-ate, they become the most credible promotors of nonviolent peacemaking. In the most local and ordinary situations and in the international order, may nonviolence become the hall-mark of our decisions, our relationships and our actions, and indeed of political life in all its forms.
