FourthSunday of Advent December 18 , 2016
Thanks to everybody who organized and helped with my Mass and celebrations
last Sunday. It truly was a group effort by Fr. Matthew and Deacon Michal, Kamil,
Diego, Jeanne Marie and their respective groups. I was thrilled to see so many people
sing – our young, our youth and our young at heart all shared their gift with generosity
and joy. Deacon Vin and Peggy, our altar servers, Extraordinary Ministers, my own
family each being involved brought to mind the joy and beauty of my role as pastor. How proud I was to
see my beloved family, some longtime friends, and my beloved parishioners, my parish family all there
together to celebrate this beautiful Mass of Thanksgiving with me. I’m so grateful to God for calling me
to the priesthood, for giving me the strength to do His will and for the wonderful gift of being the pastor
of my beloved St. Rose of Lima.
The party at the Park Savoy was outstanding. The staff worked so hard and are so gracious. The
food was delicious and the ambience classy under the direction of Julian Reyes and Laura Shannon. A
big thank you to Vito Cucci, and Barry and Joseph Maurillo, owners of the Park Savoy who, despite our
budget, gave a reception beyond our wildest dreams. What an outstanding place! The afternoon flew by.
I was thrilled to have so many parishioners celebrate with me. It was a joy to have Michael, Fintan and
my cousins together for the party. Fr. Matthew organized a face chat with my sister living in Vietnam
and my sister and her family living in Dublin. It was a huge surprise! Very joyful but a bit of a tear
jerker! I wondered why my brother Jim didn’t face chat and then found out he flew over from Dublin on
Monday as a surprise to spend a few days. A big thank you to Stephanie and Tanya for working so hard
and for Fr. Matthew and to the committee for their many hours of hard work to ensure a perfect
afternoon.
I was so thrilled so many people could come to my party and honored that we had a full house.
My apologies to the many people who were on the waiting list but because of space limitation, couldn’t
attend. This weekend I’ll enjoy the meet and greet with everybody and in a very casual way get to say
thank you for all you do. A big thank you to the committee for this weekend for organizing the meet and
greet. This weekend you will be given a beautiful prayer card as a memento of my anniversary. Please
pray for me. A big thanks to my friends the Leonardis Family who provided the beautiful prayer cards
and paid for the programs last week.
So here we are – one week from Christmas. The children are excited, the adults are busy and
there’s a great feeling of expectant joy in the air. It’s actually very nice to have Christmas on a Sunday
this year. If you’re feeling a little frazzled – just remember that Christmas lasts until the Epiphany. We
can still send cards and gifts even if we’re a little late. The main thing is breathe and enjoy the day. It’s
special because of Jesus’ birth in a simple stable. Let’s not get overly complicated and remember the
reason for the season. God’s love for us is unconditional – let’s pay it forward.

Fourth Week of Advent: LOVE
The fourth Sunday, the focus is LOVE. All four candles are lit each
evening during this week.
The angel Gabriel said to Mary, “Do not fear, Mary, you shall
conceive and bear a son and give him the name Jesus. Great will be
his dignity and he will be called Son of the Most High.
O Jesus, I believe you were born of Mary and are God’s Son.
Your mysterious coming is beyond understanding. Yet like your
holy mother, Mary, I wish that you come to me, for you promised
you will. Let me serve you in any way I can and know that you are
with me day by day as my life goes by.
Like Mary, your mother, though I know you only by faith, may my
whole being proclaim your greatness and my spirit rejoice in your
favor to me.
O Wisdom, holy Word of God, Jesus Christ, holding all things in
your strong yet tender hands, come and show us the way to salvation.

Our Italy Pilgrimage Experience
By Sandra Herder and Donna DiRocco
From our first prayer as pilgrims together on the bus ride to
Newark Airport, to our last prayers on the bus coming home,
the bonding experience with our Lord and the friendships we
made will never be forgotten
Even though we had approximately 5 to 6 hours sleep per
night and the pace of the trip was set at “full speed ahead,” we
still were able to keep up our stamina because Italy does have
a tendency to energize everyone. We experienced mass every
day at various churches and basilicas , one more beautiful than
the next. We looked forward to Father Owen’s masses and
his sermons daily, some of which involved praying for special
intentions for family members as well as deceased loved ones
and the group was very eager to share their testimonies which
many times moved us to tears. We also prayed for the Pope’s
intentions and our parish members back home at St. Rose of
Lima.
Sandra’s highlight of the trip was the viewing of the “Last
Supper” by Michelangelo, Donna's was the Papal Blessing in
St. Peter’s Square given by Papa Francesco. As he rode past
us in his Popemobile, you could feel his holiness and
godliness. It gave us a surreal feeling that only people seeing
him in person could experience and we were fortunate enough
to have this opportunity because of Father Owen, Stephanie,
Dan and Alex’ planning. Also a highlight for both of us was
attending evening prayers at the Pontifical North American
College with Alex and all the seminarians. The view from the
rooftop of the college was amazing as you were able to view
the entire city of Rome along with a magnificent sunset.
We visited just to name a few of the cities; Padua, Milan, Lake
Como, Cinque Terre, Florence, Venice, Assisi and Rome.
Each city had something special to offer, whether it
was architecture, history, landscapes , food/wine, and
artifacts. Needless to say each one of the cities were unique
in their own way and had their individual characteristics which
makes Italy so distinctive.
We knew it was going to be a special trip…but had no
idea how meaningful and inspirational the journey would
become for us. We feel very blessed to have had this amazing
opportunity.
Thank you Father Owen, Stephanie and Dan Politi (and an
extra thank you to Dan, our special photographer) for a trip of
a lifetime.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER Santa Story Hour was tons of fun! The children came dressed
in their cutest Christmas pajamas! There were stories, a Santa
craft and hot chocolate and muffins. Of course, Santa made a
guest appearance. He took time out from his busy schedule to
make time to read Twas The Night Before Christmas to the
children of St. Rose because he heard what good little boys
and girls they are! All left with special gifts from Santa and
St. Rose.
In class this week, the children were busy making special gifts
for their Moms and Dads. We are also busy learning our
songs for our Christmas Concert on Wednesday, December
21st. We are also discussing those children who are less
fortunate than we are and what we can do to help make their
Christmas special.
If you are interested in signing up for St. Rose of Lima
Early Childhood Center, please call to come take a tour
of our facility 973-887-1801! We have schedules for all
your needs: part-time, full day and extended day!
