These days, if you’re looking for information about anyone or anything, you just reach for your phone, laptop or PC and check out whatever or whoever it is on Google.
In developing my thoughts for this week’s front page of our bulletin, I typed the words: “George Beard”. I found he was a central character in a children’s TV series with the unlikely name of “Captain Underpants”! (Just imagine the furtive chuckles of kids as they follow the “exploits” of this cartoon character!)
Then in the “Images” section of Google, I found are numerous photos of George Clooney, sporting a beard!
So why the search of the internet for “George Beard”? Well, Rowville’s George passed away this week, 90 years young and a genuine local and totally Christian hero - in the best and most fitting sense of the word.
I first met George after being asked to lead a prayer service a few times each year at Peppertree Hill Retirement Village, near Stud Park.
George was the Peppertree resident who, in those distant pre-COVID days, rang ministers like me to ensure we hadn’t forgotten to come, welcomed us when we arrived (I was often late but George never chastised me one bit!), and showed us wonderful hospitality when the service was over.
George would often lead those weekly prayer services at Peppertree Hill, and always did so with a clear sense of Christian faith which resonated with the nearly one hundred attending residents. But what stood out were his weekly “pastoral visits” reports, in which he conveyed news of residents - current and past - who were battling with deteriorating health.
His “news” was based not on hearsay or even informed phone conversations. It was based on his personal visits to people in hospitals, aged care facilities, other retirement villages - people who knew that he had journeyed to where they were simply to show the love of Jesus to his neighbour, whether they lived next door in the Village or some considerable distance away.
His life, especially in his “retirement”, was one of care for and dedication to others, reminding us all that, even in our “senior years”, we are still able to make an important and worthwhile contribution to the life of those around us.
A just and loving God will surely reward this wonderful gentleman for his kindness and unselfishness, expressed so often in the context of his genuine and practical Christian goodness. May he rest forever in the arms of a loving God.

First reading Jonah 3:1-5, 10
The word of the Lord was addressed to Jonah: ‘Up!’ he said ‘Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to them as I told you to.’ Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was a city great beyond compare: it took three days to cross it. Jonah went on into the city, making a day’s journey. He preached in these words, ‘Only forty days more and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.’ And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least.
God saw their efforts to renounce their evil behaviour. And God relented: he did not inflict on them the disaster which he had threatened.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 24(25):4-6, 7b -9
Second reading 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 Brothers: our time is growing short. Those who have wives should live as though they had none, and those who mourn should live as though they had nothing to mourn for; those who are enjoying life should live as though there were nothing to laugh about; those whose life is buying things should live as though they had nothing of their own; and those who have to deal with the world should not become engrossed in it. I say this because the world as we know it is passing away.
Gospel Mark 1:14-20
I will make you into fishers of men
After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the Good News from God. ‘The time has come’ he said ‘and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News.’
As he was walking along by the Sea of Galilee he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net in the lake – for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men.’ And at once they left their nets and followed him.
Going on a little further, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they too were in their boat, mending their nets. He called them at once and, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the men he employed, they went after him.
