So what do we do – as a parish, that is, as a worshipping community? People with loved ones living interstate or overseas are familiar with the benefits of phone calls, Skype, shared photos etc. Those connecting points are helpful, if not essential, but theyre not the same as actually being with those who are precious to us. Similarly, the daily online Masses have been fantastic in keeping us connected with our Faith, and it is expected these will continued indefinitely. But there are (at least) three important components of our church and parish life which online Masses, valuable and helpful as they are, cannot replace. These are (1) the actual, personal reception of Holy Communion, (2) the important experience of praying together with those who share our Faith, and (3) the similarly valuable experience of just being togetheras we come and go from our church (even with social distancing being observed). Please God the spike in Victoria of identified COVID-19 cases will diminish, and the potential for 50 people to attend Mass together will re-emerge. When (hopefully not if) that occurs, then St. Simons will be doing its utmost to provide increased opportunities for those three faith connectionsmentioned above to be made available. Primarily, this will be through some additional Masses - hopefully three on Saturdays, three on Sundays. We might also be able to engage a visiting priest on occasions. Perhaps we could have a hybridof our video-recorded Mass combined with livereadings, the singing of hymns together and the distribution of Holy Communion might tick those three critically important boxes, so as to preserve and express some of the key components of or community worship. We will need to be permitted the minimum of 50 attendees in order to engage the necessary volunteers to make this possible over increased occasions each weekend. Of course the online Masses on our website will continue to keep parishioners and many others connected to the Mass from St. Simons as they have over the past four months. Maintaining our links with the Eucharist and with each other will be a key element of how we, both as individuals and as a parish, will ultimately emerge from these challenging times.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL HELPLINE:

1800 305 330

In a week or so, it will be four months since we last gathered together in our church as the St. Simon’s parish community a Across four Masses. On March 15, we had no idea that it could be many months until we would could come together in prayer, as most of us have been able to do all of our lives. We are still facing an uncertain future, and it would be foolish even to attempt to predict when the restrictions we are

negotiating daily will be merely a dim memory.

So what do we do – as a parish, that is, as a “worshipping community? The “worshipping” is still possible, and personal prayer and a connection with Mass as the central expression of our Catholic Faith can still be managed through the website Masses. And a limited number of people (though currently just 20), can attend Mass “in person”.

But being “community” is more difficult. People with loved ones living interstate or overseas are familiar with the benefits of phone calls, Skype, shared photos etc. Those connecting points are helpful, if not essential, but they’re not the same as actually being with those who are precious to us.

Similarly, the daily online Masses have been fantastic in keeping us connected with our Faith, and it is expected these will continued indefinitely. But there are (at least) three important components of our church and parish life which online Masses, valuable and helpful as they are, cannot replace.

These are (1) the actual, personal reception of Holy Communion, (2) the important experience of praying together with those who share our Faith, and (3) the similarly valuable experience of just ”being together” as we come and go from our church (even with social distancing being observed).

Please God the spike in Victoria of identified COVID-19 cases will diminish, and the potential for 50 people to attend Mass together will re-emerge. When (hopefully not “if” ) that occurs, then St. Simon’s will be doing its utmost to provide increased opportunities for those three “faith connections” mentioned above to be made available.

Primarily, this will be through some additional Masses - hopefully three on Saturdays, three on Sundays. We might also be able to engage a visiting priest on occasions. Perhaps we could have a “hybrid” of our video-recorded Mass combined with ”live” readings, the singing of hymns together and the distribution of Holy Communion might tick those three critically important boxes, so as to preserve and express some of the key components of or community worship.

We will need to be permitted the minimum of 50 attendees in order to engage the necessary volunteers to make this possible over increased occasions each weekend. Of course the online Masses on our website will continue to keep parishioners and many others connected to the Mass from St. Simon’s as they have over the past four months.

Maintaining our links with the Eucharist and with each other will be a key element of how we, both as individuals and as a parish, will ultimately emerge from these challenging times.

PRAYER GROUPS AND OTHER PARISH MEETINGS

As you will probably be aware, the planned increase

in Mass attendance from 20 to 50, due to come into force

last Monday, 22 June 2020, has been deferred due to the

recent increase in COVID-19 cases in Melbourne.

The Victorian Government has also put a limit of 10 on any

prayer group or equivalent religious meeting which is

face-to-face or in person. Sacraments have a range of limits

depending on the type of ceremony, while Mass attendance

remains limited to 20 people.

To make it simple for people trying to plan Parish activities in

accordance with the restrictions, all Parish group meetings,

(other than Mass attendance and approved sacraments) will

be limited to a maximum of 10 people, including those

running the meeting. All meetings will be held in the Hall in

the Parish Centre, which is set up for 10 people at the

required 1.5m social distance.

To use the space for an approved meeting you must:

1. Nominate a supervisor who is responsible for compliance

with these required procedures (if the meeting is attended

by a staff member, they will normally be the designated

supervisor unless they appoint someone else)

2. Book the space through the Parish Office to ensure it is

available – please don’t just assume it will be

3. Receive an access code to use with the electronic lock

– please contact the Parish office for that code

4. Use the tables and chairs as laid out .

– please do not move them

5. Capture in writing a list of all attendees, including at least

first name and contact phone number

6. Clean the area thoroughly after use, including all desks

used and any other surfaces or door handles touched

7. Submit the list of names and confirmation that cleaning

has been done to the Parish office as soon as possible

after the meeting

Please contact Peter Evans, Parish Business Manager,

on 9764 4058 or [email protected]

if you have any queries about this. We will notify you when

the procedure changes.

First reading Zechariah 9: 9-10

The Lord says this:

Rejoice heart and soul, daughter of Zion! Shout with gladness, daughter of Jerusalem! See now, your king comes to you; he is victorious, he is triumphant, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will banish chariots from Ephraim and horses from Jerusalem; the bow of war will be banished. He will proclaim peace for the nations. His empire shall stretch from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 144(145): 1-2, 8-11, 13b-14

Second reading Romans 8: 9, 11-13

Your interests are not in the unspiritual, but in the spiritual, since the Spirit of God has made his home in you. In fact, unless you possessed the Spirit of Christ you would not belong to him, and if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to your own mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you.

So then, my brothers, there is no necessity for us

to obey our unspiritual selves or to live unspiritual lives. If you do live in that way, you are doomed to die; but if by the Spirit you put an end to the misdeeds of the body you will live.

Gospel Matthew 11: 25-30

Jesus exclaimed, ‘I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children. Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

‘Come to me, all you who labour and are

overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’
