So what do we do – as a parish, that is, as a “worshipping community? The “worshipping” is still possible, and personal prayer and a connection with Mass as the central expression of our Catholic Faith can still be managed through the website Masses. And a limited number of people (though currently just 20), can attend Mass “in person”. But being “community” is more difficult. People with loved ones living interstate or overseas are familiar with the benefits of phone calls, Skype, shared photos etc. Those connecting points are helpful, if not essential, but they’re not the same as actually being with those who are precious to us. Similarly, the daily online Masses have been fantastic in keeping us connected with our Faith, and it is expected these will continued indefinitely. But there are (at least) three important components of our church and parish life which online Masses, valuable and helpful as they are, cannot replace. These are (1) the actual, personal reception of Holy Communion, (2) the important experience of praying together with those who share our Faith, and (3) the similarly valuable experience of just ”being together” as we come and go from our church (even with social distancing being observed). Please God the spike in Victoria of identified COVID-19 cases will diminish, and the potential for 50 people to attend Mass together will re-emerge. When (hopefully not “if” ) that occurs, then St. Simon’s will be doing its utmost to provide increased opportunities for those three “faith connections” mentioned above to be made available. Primarily, this will be through some additional Masses - hopefully three on Saturdays, three on Sundays. We might also be able to engage a visiting priest on occasions. Perhaps we could have a “hybrid” of our video-recorded Mass combined with ”live” readings, the singing of hymns together and the distribution of Holy Communion might tick those three critically important boxes, so as to preserve and express some of the key components of or community worship. We will need to be permitted the minimum of 50 attendees in order to engage the necessary volunteers to make this possible over increased occasions each weekend. A chapel has been set up at the new Parish Centre. For the time being, it will be open on Mondays and Fridays only, from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.
