Stations of the Cross Every Friday Night in Lent

March 10, 17, 24, 31

April 7th Living Stations at 7:30pm 7:00pm In Church

STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which re-counts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God--we want control, power, and answers to all of life's difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this sea-son of repentance so that we can join our hearts with oth-ers on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Apparitions of Our Lady: Our Lady of Fatima The fifth apparition was brief, but many came hoping to see Our Lady or some miracle. On September 13, 1917, over thirty thousand gathered at the site, pray-ing their rosaries and waiting for the three children and the time of the apparition. As it was about to begin, some reported that the air cooled a little bit and the sun dimmed a little. Some said they saw a globe of light approach the area just before Lucia began to speak to Our Lady. Lucia had a brief conversation with Our Lady asking about some people who were sick. As usual, Our Lady said that she would heal some and not others. Also as usual, Mary asked the children to keep praying the rosary that the war would end. She made a promise for October that she would come, Our Lord would come, and St. Joseph would also appear to bless the world. She also promised again to perform a miracle in October that all would believe. Next week we’ll begin looking at the final apparition of Our Lady to the three children. Until then, keep praying your rosaries for the conversion of the world. –Fr. Purcell. www.mysteryandtruth.wordpress.com

St. Simon-Masaka Cow Project During this spring season, let us celebrate with the farmers who have received cows thanks to the generosity of the community of St. Simon the Apostle. Here are two of the farmers who have recently received cows funded by donations through St. Simon. Harriet Makumbi is 33 years old. She lives with a disability and is raising one boy and two girls. Before her cow, she had no source of income and was struggling to grow enough for her family to eat on her three acres of unproductive land. Now that she has improved her farm and has received a Living Loan of a pregnant cow, Harriet feels she will be able to provide for her family and pay school fees for her children.

Ruth Mbabazi is also 33 years old. She is married and has five children. They all suffer from poor nutrition and have struggled to produce enough on their 1.5 acre farm. Now that they have enrolled in the Cow Project, Ruth and her family drink milk every day and are working hard to improve their soil fertility with the output from their cow. This will yield better crops and more food for the family.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – The Power of Fasting Jesus provides a marvelous example for us as we continue the beginning of our Lenten journey. Many of us have forgotten the great blessing and strengthening that fasting provides for us. When we fast from food, we understand more vividly how each meal is a blessing from God and God shows us our need to rely on Him for sustenance. Fasting must not simply pertain to food however. We can fast from false gods like our Lord did in the desert. We can fast from overuse of social media, technology, desire for power or recognition, sloth, or selfish use of our material resources. As we enter into the desert with the Lord for the next 40 days, let us pray for the gift of generosity and the grace to lead more simple lives, lives that radiate joy and hope in the most important thing: salvation in Christ. Pope Benedict XVI stated that “through fasting and praying, we allow Him (God) to come and satisfy the deepest hunger that we experience in the depths of our being: the hunger and thirst for God.” archstl.org/dynamic

March 5, 2017 - 1st Sunday of Lent “It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.” Matthew 4:10 Tempted between the riches and power of this world and service to God, Jesus chose service to His Father. If we wish to truly follow Jesus, we, too, must decide to turn away from power and riches and put God at the center of our lives. How is God calling you to serve?

Case for Smiles Sewing Session at St. Simon

The Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary is once again hosting a Sewing Session. The organization, Case for Smiles, was formerly known as ConKerr Cancer. We will still be sewing pillow cases for children going through treatments at area children’s hospitals. No sewing skills are needed as there are many tasks that do not involve sewing (and some that do!). This fun event is happening on Tuesday, March 21st from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm in the Lower Church Hall. You do not have to stay the entire time. You can come and help as long as you want; you may have so much fun, you won’t want to leave! We welcome anyone who wants to come and have fun while helping children with cancer and other long term illnesses. All parishioners (and their friends, family and neighbors) are invited to join us in making brightly colored pillow cases for children in the hospital going through chemo treatments. This event is not limited to adults. If anyone has any questions, call Diane at 845-8442. See you on March 21st !
