Stations of the Cross Every Friday Night in Lent

March 31st at 7:00pm in Church

April 7th Living Stations at 7:30pm In Church

A LENTEN INVITATION A few years ago, in his annual Lenten message, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI wrote: "Faith is genuine only if crowned by charity." Here at St. Simon parish we will once again continue our wonderful opportunity to live out this profound sentiment expressed by the Holy Father. As an expression of faith, on Friday, April 7, 2017 we will pray the Living Stations of the Cross in Church at 7:30 p.m., as members of the parish reenact the last hours of Jesus. Upon conclusion of the Stations, Eucharistic Adoration will begin, which will continue until 9:00 p.m. We will then "crown" our faith by performing a work of charity on Saturday morning, April 8, 2017 as we conduct a food drive to benefit our St. Vincent de Paul Society, as well as the Affton Christian Food Pantry, of which St. Simon is a member. On Saturday morning, April 8, volunteers will be outside the lower church doors from 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. to receive your "works of charity" in the form of contributions of non-perishable food and personal hygiene items for use by these wonderful organizations as they strive to meet the challenges of those in our area who are in need. Following is a list of suggested items for donation by last names: ABC Canned or box Soup/Ramen Noodles DEF Rice/Pasta or Pasta Sauce/Mac & Cheese GHI Jars of Baby Food/Powdered Milk/ Peanut Butter JKL Canned Meat (chicken/ham/Spam) MNO Canned Vegetables/Canned Fruit PQR Canned Ravioli/Spaghetti/Sloppy- Joe/Stew/Chili STU Flour/Sugar/Boxed mixes (Cake/Au Gratin or Scalloped Potatoes) VWXYZ Cereal/Pancake mix and Syrup Additional items needed are: paper towels, toilet paper, facial tissues, bar soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, household cleaners and laundry detergent. Monetary donations will also be gratefully accepted. Volunteers (of all ages) are needed that morning to help receive, sort, box-up and transport the items. If you (or your family) are available to help, please contact Rick Eschelbach at 314-541-5304 or [email protected]

Dear Parishioners of St. Simon’s, Our new speakers are operational! This weekend, at all of the Masses, our new speaker system will be in use. You will hopefully notice a better quality of sound and greater coverage across the entire span of our seating in church. Mr. Chris Sauer from the Avid Group will be present at our Masses this weekend (you may notice him walking around within church during Mass), in order to monitor and adjust the system to its optimal performance level, BUT, the new speakers are installed and ready for use! I want to express my thanks to all of you and your generous pledges/donations to the Beyond Sunday campaign, which has made this new speaker system possible for our parish. One of the new options within the new system is the ability to “live stream” or “broadcast” liturgical events from our parish onto our website. While the new camera for this capability has been installed, we are still working on setting up the system and trying to figure out the best way to live stream Mass with our current computer network system here at St. Simon’s. Our homebound parishioners are not able, YET, to see and hear Mass live from St. Simon’s; this will hopefully be operational in a couple of weeks – watch for more details soon! Finally, I wanted to invite all of you to a healing prayer service this Tuesday, March 28th, at 7pm, here at St. Simon’s with Archbishop Carlson. This is a prayer service will focus on spiritual healing for survivors of physical, sexual or emotional abuse. Family members and friends of abuse survivors are encouraged to attend, as well as those who are involved in helping abused people. Also, those who work to prevent abuse as well as those who want to pray for healing --- everyone is invited to attend and participate in this evening of prayer with Archbishop Carlson. I hope to see you there! Have a healthy and holy week! St. Simon the Apostle pray for us! Sincerely, Fr. Brad

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Spiritual Sight There are simply times in life where we are in the dark and do not see as the Lord sees. Lent is a time of going into the desert, a time that can be dry and desolate in our spiritual lives. In the midst of this darkness, however, the Lord can work wonders and purify our relationship with Him and family members and friends. Just as the blind man could not see but obeyed the Lord, we too must continue to heed the voice of the Lord so that we may truly see with the eyes of faith. As the Pharisees shows us, it is often when we think we know it all or see everything already that the opposite is true. Jesus came that we may see. We pray that Jesus might open the eyes of our hearts and minds to see Him. archstl.org/dynamic

March 26, 2017 - 4th Sunday of Lent “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.” 1 SAMUEL 16:7 How often do we invest our time, talent and treasure in creating an appearance that does not matter at all to God? We strive to impress with our clothing, home, ca-reer, possessions, car and other marks of distinction. But none of these illusions of greatness will impress God. In-stead, He will look into our hearts to see how much we loved Him, how much we loved others and how we showed that love by the way we used our time, talents and treasure here on earth.

During this spring season, let us celebrate with the farmers who have received cows thanks to the generosity of the community of St. Simon the Apostle. Here are two of the farmers who have recently received cows funded by donations through St. Simon.

Harriet Makumbi is 33 years old. She lives with a disability and is raising one boy and two girls. Before her cow, she had no source of income and was struggling to grow enough for her family to eat on her three acres of unproductive land. Now that she has improved her farm and has received a Living Loan of a pregnant cow, Harriet feels she will be able to provide for her family and pay school fees for her children.

Ruth Mbabazi is also 33 years old. She is married and has five children. They all suffer from poor nutrition and have struggled to produce enough on their 1.5 acre farm. Now that they have enrolled in the Cow Project, Ruth and her family drink milk every day and are working hard to improve their soil fertility with the output from their cow. This will yield better crops and more food for the family.
