BAPTISMS Baptisms are scheduled on the Second Sunday of the month at 11:30 AM based on parental requests. Participation in a Parent Preparation Program is mandatory before the baptism of the child. Our preparation Program is held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM. Attendance at Sunday Mass on the day of the Baptism is Mandatory. Please call the Parish office to schedule a baptism.

WEDDINGS All weddings are scheduled by the Pastor of the Parish. Office staff cannot schedule a wedding and a wedding is not consid-ered to be officially scheduled until the couple receives written confirmation from the Pastor of the Parish. Couples desiring to be married need to speak directly with the Pastor BEFORE re-serving a hall. Only the Bride or Groom may request a date for their wedding. Diocesan policy requires that a 6 month (minimum) preparation process be completed prior to the cele-bration of all weddings. Weddings are not scheduled on Sun-days.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK Parishioners who are seriously or critically ill, or have surgery scheduled should receive the Sacrament of Anointing and Heal-ing. Please call the parish office to request this sacrament. Reg-ular visits are also made by our Pastoral Staff and Ministers of Care to bring Holy Communion to hospitalized or homebound parishioners. Anyone desiring such a visit should call the Parish Office.

FROM FATHER JOHN: “We cannot stand idly by, enjoying our own riches and freedom if, in any place the Lazarus of the twen-tieth century [or any century] stands at our doors.” (St. Pope John Paul II)

St. Paul the Apostle Parish and all of our parishioners are abundantly blessed. We are a vibrant parish offering all of the sacraments to our people, particularly, the daily reception of the Eucharist as well as offering valuable educational, liturgical and other ministe-rial services to members of our community. We strive to meet the needs of our parish and do so through the exemplary work of our teachers, lay and religious leaders, catechists and volunteers. We are a blessed parish, and I thank you for your presence in our faith community.

God has granted each of us unique gifts, graces, and resources that are to be shared responsibly and wisely with others. We may be blessed financially, we may have time to share, or we may have special abilities. Whatever our gifts, God calls us to be good stew-ards of them, cognizant of the priority with which we use them and the measure of gratitude in how we give them.

I want to take this opportunity to present the financial condition of St. Paul the Apostle Parish to all the people of our parish. I decid-ed to do this in my bulletin article in order to, one, give everyone from our parish the opportunity to receive the same update that everyone else receives and, two, I want to put the details in a form that the people of our parish can take home and study and, three, I want to make sure that the details are placed before everyone in a consistent manner so that we can all be on the same page vis-à-vis our parish’s financial condition. You will find the 2013/2014 Financial Report enclosed in this bulletin.

Our last fiscal year ended on June 30th. Our total collections in Fiscal 2013/2014 were $951, 998. Our Sunday collection was $832,102 and we had additional special collections of $119,896. These additional special collections included the Christmas collec-tion, the Sunday collection and two one-time donations of $60,000 and $20,000, respectively. We cannot expect to receive such gen-erous one-time donations each year. Our Sunday collections are critical to the financial viability of our parish. Relying on special one-time gifts to our parish would not be a wise way to steward our resources.

You will notice in our Financial Report that we had a deficit of $226,457 for the fiscal year. This was due to the HVAC project in the school and the decline we have seen in our Sunday collections. Our capital expenditures were $ 354,844 for the fiscal year. We are projecting higher capital expenditures during this fiscal year because many of the invoices associated with the HVAC project will be paid during this fiscal year. Our current shortfall in our Sunday collections (as of 9.21.14) for the current fiscal year is $25,872 or $2,156 per week. This pro-jects to an annual deficit in our collections of $112,112. The Parish Finance Council and I will have to take a hard look at our ex-penses with the goal of decreasing them dramatically if we do not increase our Sunday collections. Unfortunately, we have seen a steady decline in our parish collections over the past six years as the following graph illustrates.

I would like to ask everyone who is able to increase their weekly/monthly gift to our parish to be as generous as possible and to be intentional in planning what you are able to give to the parish given your financial resources. I realize that the poor state of our econ-omy has impacted many people from our parish negatively. But, I also realize that it has not impacted others as much or even at all. That is why I am asking for each member of our parish to seriously consider increasing their donations to our parish. This will ena-ble those who can give more to offset what our financially troubled brothers and sisters are unable to give. For those who have lost jobs or businesses and are struggling in these difficult times, I understand why you can’t give more at this time, I empathize with you, I pray for your financial success and I ask that you support our parish with your prayers and with your time and talent. For those of you who can give more, I ask that you do, that you prayerfully consider what you can give and that you increase your dona-tion based on that prayerful consideration.

WHO WILL FILL THESE SHOES?

Fr. Victor Ivers was celebrating Mass one Sunday in 2007 at St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville. It was his final mass before retiring after more than sixty years as a priest of the Archdio-cese of Chicago. The church was packed because Fr. Ivers was well-loved. Something odd happened as Fr. Ivers was processing out of Mass. A strange look came across his face. He stopped about halfway down the center aisle and returned to the altar. He bent over, took off his shoes, laid his shoes at the foot of the altar, turned to the assembly and asked the stunned congregation a very simple question, “Who will fill these shoes?” He then walked out of the church (in his socks!). It really is a simple question, “Who will fill these shoes?” More importantly, it’s a shocking image, the image of empty shoes, a priest’s shoes, laying there by the altar. It is a sharp reminder to all of us that without priests there will be no Eucharist.
