Spiritual Warfare: Attacks of the Enemy The baptized living on earth form the ‘Church Militant.’ The Church Militant is distinguished from the Church Suffering (the Holy Souls in purgatory) and the Church Triumphant (all the saints in heaven). Unlike the Church Suffering and Church Triumphant, our souls are still in the battle for eternal bliss or punishment, hence the name ‘Militant’.

One aspect of this battle for eternal life is the struggle against evil. Temptations can come from our own disordered desires, from the world, and from the Evil One. I want to focus on the last of these today. First, I must emphasize: every soul is given the grace to fight the temptations of the Evil One. We’ll cover the weapons we can use against his attacks next week. Here, we’ll discuss how he acts so that you can better defend yourself against his attacks

The Evil One wants to tempt to sin. Normally, he doesn’t make it a blatant temptation, such as, “Choose this evil thing.” He is much trickier than that: he tries to make an evil thing seem “not all that bad” or “the lesser of two evils.” He tries to attract us to pleasure and to disregard what it does to the soul. He’ll make drunkenness look luring as having a good time at a party, justify a bad book because reading is better than watching TV, or make family time on Sunday seem more important than going to Mass. (“After all,” he’ll whisper, “you don’t really get anything out of it because of the kids. And the homilies aren’t as interesting as TV preachers.”) In these moments, we reaffirm our faith in Our Lord and his revelation, and then we reaffirm our belief in the way he has told us to get to heaven.

Another attack that the Evil One is to try to get us to turn our wills away from what God asked of us. This turning may not necessarily be to something sinful, but might just be to a more comfortable way, a way less glorious to God. He tries to make us reject the spirit of fortitude that we were given at our Baptism so we do not courageously take on difficult projects. We must remember in these times that God’s grace is sufficient, no matter what the task at hand. We must remember to hope in his grace to persevere through any struggle we are given.

A final attack the Evil One makes is trying to make you give up. It happens in lots of ways. Maybe you’re sick of confessing a sin, so he tempts you not to return to confession. Maybe you’ve been trying to pray every day for 20 years, and you are becoming unsettled at your slow growth or apparent stagnation, and so he tempts you to give it up. Pray for perseverance. Our Lord’s grace will aid you.

In the gospel of Luke 19:1-10 Jesus has an encounter with Zacchaeus “a chief tax collector”. He is described as rich, greedy, despised by others, a sinner in the eyes of all. Zacchaeus is short, so he climbed a tree to get a better view of Jesus who happened to be passing through. Surprisingly, Jesus stopped, looked up and told Zacchaeus He would like to stay at his house. This becomes a life-changing event for Zacchaeus in that he gives away half of his possessions and returns ”fourfold” to anyone he has cheated. Jesus has not asked this reparation of him, only shown him love, respect, mercy. Zacchaeus had a personal and intimate encounter with Jesus. Having been loved first and freely, Zacchaeus feels the urge for reparation for his sins. He learns to love and respect others in return. This is how God’s love, God’s mercy operates. As we are shown love and mercy, we are then able to do the same. Jesus, grow my love for you and my neighbor.

Corner of Mercy for your reflection:

RCIA is for those wishing to become Catholic or for Catholics returning after some absence from the Church to the practice of the Catholic faith R.C.I.A. meets on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:00pm in the Mary Room, starting Thursday, October 6. A little faith can go a long way—sometimes that seemingly-small first step is a giant leap forward toward salvation and eternal life. Think of all the occasions in which Jesus Him-self says “your faith has saved you” even after a simple word or gesture that expressed the tiny mustard-seed faith begin-ning to grow in one of His disciples. Can we take that im-portant first--or next—baby step toward deeper knowledge and love of Christ? (CCC 186, 2607-2615) archstl.org/dynamic
