ST. JAMES COURT ART SHOW 2017 3
Nancy HopkinsYears exhibiting: 2Medium: ClayBooth: SJ-122
Describe your work — what do you create?Using low-relief earthenware, I create intimately proportioned one-of-a-kind works (tiles and sculpture). I embellish these with acrylic paint, glaze, underglaze, grout and found objects. Each piece has an underlying humorous or mysterious narrative stemming from my interest in children’s books and my sometimes offbeat aesthetic. In addition, I create a line of colorful and functional Madge Dishes©. Madge Dishes© are “cute little dishes with BIG possibilities!” They are the perfect size to hold your most precious or most mundane objects. They come in many different shapes like flowers, bees, ladybugs, leaves, etc.
What inspires your creations? My influences include a love of animals, gardening, contemporary illustration and an appreciation for the absurdities of everyday life.
What’s your favorite thing about the St. James Court Art Show? The beautiful location and the friendly people!
What’s the one thing you must have with you at the show?Water and my iPhone.
When you’re not creating art, what’s your favorite way to spend your time?I love to garden and take long walks with my doggy, Colin. He is the friendliest, most loving puppy I’ve ever had! He gets me out of my introverted shell.
Nichole CollinsYears exhibiting: 5Medium: JewelryBooth: SJ-220
When did you first begin making jewelry?I have always loved and been attracted to art. I started making jewelry in college and received my bachelors degree in metalsmithing and jewelry design from the University of Kansas. I also studied jewelry design at Lahti Polytechnic in Lahti, Finland.
Where do you get inspiration for your work?My most recent work is inspired by my flower garden. I enjoy looking at dried flower petals for inspiration.
What’s your favorite thing about the St. James Court Art Show?I love seeing many of the same customers year after year.
What’s one thing you bring with you every year?Every year I bring hand warmers just in case it gets cold.
When you’re not creating art, what’s your favorite way to spend your time?I love to spend time outside and gardening in my flower garden.
Joel PinkertonYears exhibiting: 10 Medium: Mixed media 3DBooth: SJ-318
How did you get started in mixed media?I use found objects and things that have been discarded or forgotten … objects that still have a lot of life left in them. The cost of my materials is usually very low yet durable.

The 5 FamiliarFACES of the St. James Court Art Show
4 ST. JAMES COURT ART SHOW 2017
What inspires your creations?I’m usually inspired by the objects I find. I try to create the next best use for an object playing off its shape, size, color, etc. The characters and their expressions play off of real life experiences and encounters with the world around me.
You’ve been exhibiting at the St. James Court Art Show for 10 years. How has it changed since the first year you were here?I don’t think it has changed all that much in the years I’ve been a part of it, but the art offered is always changing.
What is the one thing you have to have with you when you’re at the show? The one thing I always bring with me is a smile for all who visit my booth.
When you’re not creating art, what’s your favorite way to spend your time?If I’m not creating art, I’m looking for art making materials.
Paul James Years exhibiting: 20Medium: PhotographyBooth: FS-683
Describe your photography and what inspires the shots.Nature inspires me, whether it is in our national parks or the wonderful gardens throughout the United States and Europe that have been designed to interact with the landscape. In early November, the cottonwoods come into their fall of golds along the Virgin River in Zion. During the first week in July, the lavender blooms in the Luberon of Provence.
Describe your ideal customer. My ideal customers is someone who enjoys nature and spends time interacting with her. Sometimes I sell clients an image that reminds them of a location where they have visited, and sometimes I sell them a workshop where they spend time learning how to use their camera equipment and come home to decorate with images they have captured.
How has your work evolved in the 20 years you’ve been exhibiting at the St. James Court Art Show?Twenty years ago, images were printed in the dark room where I had an RGB color wheel to bring out the colors. Today I spend a lot of time on the computer, where I can be more creative using Photoshop’s digital darkroom. There is a sign next to my monitor that reads, “Here lies a land where time does not exist!”
What one thing do you have to have with you while you’re at the show?I carry an information sheet on all the location workshops that I will be teaching over the next 12 months and spend most of my time talking about photo equipment and the possibilities of travel with clients at the art fairs I attend.
When you’re not creating art, what’s your favorite way to spend your time?Spending time with family and friends is the most important thing I do. I just returned home from a 21-day shoot in Tuscany and Provence, where my brother and nephew joined me. My nephew joined me for all the first light shoots, my brother did not. Fortunately my family and friends enjoy traveling and often capturing images with me.
Mary Lou HessYears exhibiting: 42Medium: PrintmakingBooth: SJ-206
Describe your work — what do youcreate, and what inspires your work?I have been creating and exhibiting etchings for over 45 years.
This is the 61st year of the St. James Court Art Show. You’ve been exhibiting for more than two-thirds of those years. How has the show evolved since the first year you were here? From a clothesline show, St. James has grown into a highly organized and respected art fair known all over the United States. Through the years there have been changes and additions and now Louisville has an October event nationally known, one that has a waiting list of applicants.
What’s your favorite thing about the show?It is a well-juried show that has something for everyone.
What’s one thing you want visitors of the show to know about either you, your work or the show in general?Rain or shine, St. James Court is the place to be the first weekend of October.
When you’re not creating art, what’s your favorite way to spend your time?Gardening and reading.
Stop by the booths of these talented artists and see why they come back year after year!

Billy TackettBorn and raised in eastern Kentucky, art has always been an influential part of my life. I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. As a kid I adored comic books, horror movies, and Saturday morning cartoons. Little did I know all this would one day collide to create my lifelong career and passion!
In my 25+ year art career, nearly 300 of my works have been published as book covers, illustrations, etc. During this time I created a series of oil paintings which led to multiple exhibits, awards, and invitations to national conventions and events.
While exploring other styles and mediums I developed my “splatter art” technique. By dipping my fingers into the paint and flicking it onto the canvas I’m able to capture my desired image without the use of brushes, giving my highly textured art a more fluid and organic quality. The kinetic energy of my splatter art technique gives a viewer a whole new level of interaction, allowing me to offer live art demonstrations.
The success of my splatter art has enabled me to open my own studio gallery where I explore new techniques. My work still resonates with my love of pop culture and you’ll find it now sprinkled with more fine art creations. These have allowed me to spread my wings and experiment with more architecture, portraits, and still lifes...things I probably would have never painted prior. And for that I am grateful.
Billy Tackett, Artist
Jenna WhiteJenna is a recent graduate of the Graphic Design program at the University of Louisville. Soon after graduation in May she started her career as a Junior Graphic Designer at Brown-Forman. Although she chose graphic design as a career path, art has always been her passion. She is a skilled illustrator, both by hand and digital. The design she created for The Saint James Art Show showcases both hand and digital illustration, blended together to create a fun and exciting piece! The color pallet she chose draws directly from the Old Louisville neighborhood – houses, signage, nature, etc. The design is meant to feel exciting, like a party, because that is what Saint James Art Show is for so many of us. A longstanding celebration of this community’s love for art!

3RD STREET NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION
Welcomes Artists and Art Lovers
to
St. James Court Art Show 2017
Through the funds raised during this and past Art Shows, we continue to support our local schools, our community non-profit organizations, our neighborhood parks and local events. We installed Victorian lighting along a number of Old Louisville streets and keep those lights on night after night for our community’s enjoyment and safety. We support Shakespeare in the Park, Springfest and the Garvin Gate Blues Festival. We provide much needed meals and technology to school children. We repair sidewalks, upgrade playgrounds, clean up trash, edge sidewalks, remove snow, endow scholarships and so much more!
None of this would be possible without our wonderful artists, patrons and food vendors in the 3rd Street Section of the St. James Court Art Show.
Thank You for supporting the artists and food vendors on 3rd Street.
Enjoy the 2017 Show!
