ST. Therese Catholic Church 701 S. Charles G. Seivers Blvd. Clinton, Tennessee 37716 Administrator’s Desk: Dear Brothers and Sisters of St Therese’s parish! This Sunday is very special for us as a family because we are privileged to have the Chief Shepherd of the Diocese of Knoxville preside over this weekend’s liturgy. We warmly welcome the Most Rev Richard Stika to St Therese’s parish. Its our earnest hope that his visit brings us more bless- ings as we continue to evangelize with our fellow brothers and sisters in East Tennessee. In our first reading, we meet Elijah, sitting down, hungry, tired and no doubt exhausted asking God to take his life. Thanks to the visit from the angel of the Lord; “get up and eat.” Strengthened by the food from the Lord, he was able to walk according to the scriptures for forty days and forty nights to mount Horeb. The journey through life can be difficult sometimes, but to what purpose if we do not look to the end of the journey – to the day of salvation. If the great human adventure has no lasting purpose or eternal significance, then why sacrifice to be generous? Why forgive those who have hurt us? Why hunger for justice? Why visit the sick? Why be committed to peace? Why struggle to protect babies in the womb? In the Gospel, St John presents the importance of the gift of the Eucha- rist which we hear Jesus talk about today. At this point in John’s story, Jesus has not even instituted the Eucharist. It was probably taken for granted and John spends his time on the washing of the feet. But John places the institution of the Eucharist here as part of his teaching. Jesus tries to make it clear by using Jewish references. God fed the people in the desert with manna. They lived long lives but eventually died, but to- day, Jesus feeds us with a form of manna as well, but this time when we eat this bread, we will not die. It is the gift of himself. Whenever we eat him worthily, we become what we have eaten. Brothers and sisters, the Eucharist is so important in our lives. That is why it is so important to strive to participate daily or at least weekly in order to be fed and nourished by Christ’s body so as to reach the higher perfection for which we were created. We must never hunger spiritually, because God has given us the means to be what we were originally be- fore the fall. Do we really take the time to meditate on this mystery? We need to. Administrator’s Desk:

Dear Brothers and Sisters of St Therese’s parish! This Sunday is very special for us as a family because we are privileged to have the Chief Shepherd of the Diocese of Knoxville preside over this weekend’s liturgy. We warmly welcome the Most Rev Richard Stika to St Therese’s parish. Its our earnest hope that his visit brings us more bless-ings as we continue to evangelize with our fellow brothers and sisters in

East Tennessee.

In our first reading, we meet Elijah, sitting down, hungry, tired and no doubt exhausted asking God to take his life. Thanks to the visit from the angel of the Lord; “get up and eat.” Strengthened by the food from the Lord, he was able to walk according to the scriptures for forty days and

forty nights to mount Horeb.

In the Gospel, St John presents the importance of the gift of the Eucha-rist which we hear Jesus talk about today. They lived long lives but eventually died, but to-day, Jesus feeds us with a form of manna as well, but this time when we eat this bread, we will not die. It is the gift of himself. Whenever we eat

him worthily, we become what we have eaten.

Brothers and sisters, the Eucharist is so important in our lives. That is why it is so important to strive to participate daily or at least weekly in order to be fed and nourished by Christ’s body so as to reach the higher perfection for which we were created. We must never hunger spiritually, because God has given us the means to be what we were originally be-fore the fall. Do we really take the time to meditate on this mystery? We

need to.

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“It is written in the prophets: ‘They

shall all be taught by God.’” John

6:41-51

Jesus grew up in Nazareth, a small village atop a

craggy hill with approximately four hundred peo-

ple who lived a simple, self sufficient, subsistence

lifestyle. They had many skills, such as carpentry,

smithing, masonry, and farming. They helped and

learned from each other. What they could not pro-

vide for themselves they bartered their skills to

obtain from nearby villages, like Cana. They all

knew Jesus and he knew them. When Jesus said,

“I am the bread that came down from heaven,”

contrasting himself to the manna God gave to the

Israelites, they questioned how that could be.

They knew his parents and family, but they knew

nothing of his Incarnation by the Holy Spirit, or

his true nature. Jesus understood their doubt. He

also knew that “They shall all be taught by God.”

We have the testimony of the Apostles and two

thousand years of people who believed in Jesus

and imitated him. How strong is our belief in Je-

sus? Is our faith reflected in how we help and

learn from each other, like the people of Nazareth?
