third Sunday in ordinary time ~ January 27, 2019

Dear Parishioners: Next weekend is going to be a busy one: *** 2019 Parish Councils Congress (for Pastoral and Finance Council Chairs or their representatives, one or both trustees, and pastors) on Saturday from 8:00 to 12:30 (So, Confessions will NOT be heard at STA from 9:30 to 10:00 on Saturday, February 2) *** Kick-off of Amazing Grace, the 2019 Catholic Stewardship Appeal The goals for our two parishes are being held to the same as they were for 2018: $87,500 for SJB and $23,000 for STA. While we haven’t received the official final reports for the 2018 Appeal, the last figures I saw said that STA had come in at almost 119% of its goal ($27,314.99) and SJB had come in at nearly 115% of its goal ($100,294). Well done! *** Sunday, February 3rd, is the Feast of St. Blaise. I will offer the traditional St. Blaise Blessing of the Throat after Masses at STA and SJB on Sunday morning. Anyone wishing to receive the blessing should come up as though in the line to receive Communion immediately after Mass. (The blessing will NOT be offered after Masses on Saturday.) *** And after receiving the St. Blaise Blessing of the Throat you can go home and prepare to test the blessing’s effectiveness by yelling yourselves hoarse during Superbowl LIII. The New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams at 5:30 Sunday afternoon. You don’t need to be a particularly avid fan of either team. Chances are the refereeing will give you something to yell about. Sure did in the Rams-Saints game last week! Oh, that excerpt from the opening chapter from Boy’s Life that I mentioned a couple of weeks ago?

You know, I do believe in magic. I was born and raised in a magic time, in a magic town, among magicians. Oh, most every body else didn’t realize we lived in that web of magic, connected by the silver filaments of chance and circumstance. But I knew it all along. . . . You probably did, too; you just don’t recall it. See, this is my opinion: we all start out knowing magic. We are born with whirlwinds, forest fires, and comets inside us. We are born able to sing to birds and read the clouds and see our destiny in grains of sand. But then we get the magic educated right out of our souls. We get it churched out, spanked out, washed out, and combed out. We get put on the straight and narrow and told to be responsible. Told to act our age. Told to grow up, for God’s sake. And you know why we’re told that? Because the people doing the telling were afraid of our wildness and youth, and because the magic we knew made them ashamed and sad of what they’d allowed to wither in themselves.

Living Way of the Cross...Students in Grades 3-8 of SJB, STA and other area Catholic Parishes and Schools are invited to bring to life the story of Jesus’ passion and death in “The Living Way of the Cross” during the upcoming Lenten season. After-school rehearsals, two nights a week based on student schedules, will begin at the end of February and will be held at SJB. No previous acting experience is needed. If interested please contact Amy Albers, St. John the Baptist Director of Faith Formation 920-892-6015; [email protected]

From the Respect Life Committee... Since January 22, 1973, when abortion was ruled legal by the U.S. Supreme Court, approximately 60 million babies have been aborted. “Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love but to use violence to get what they want” (St. Mother Teresa). Please come and pray the Rosary for Life that more people in our coun-try will promote a culture of life, not a culture of death. All persons from the moment of their conception until their natural death are precious creations from God, and as such, must be treat-ed with the utmost respect regardless of their situations.
