Mass Intentions This is the second in a series of reflections about the Church’s Seven Major Themes of Catholic Social Teaching. Bill Frantz, Pastoral Associate at St. Veronica and Jim Crosby, Pastoral Associate at St. John Fisher will alternate weekly contributions to the bulletin.
Catholic Social Teaching Theme #2: Call to Family, Community and ParticipationBuilding on the foundational principle that the human person is sacred, we are also social. We come to a deeper understanding of our dignity and rights in relationship with others, in community. Our society, organized in economics, politics, law and policy, affects our human dignity. While our society often exalts individualism, the Catholic tradition teaches that human beings grow and achieve fulfillment in community. Our Church teaches that the role of government and other institutions is to protect human life and human dignity and promote the common good. We are also taught that the family is the central social institution that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined.
But what does all of this mean? What is the church asking us to do? It is so easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer number of issues that face our society today. We can also become desensitized to stories of violence and injustice just because there are so many of them happening. Where do we start? I believe that we start by just believing that we can make a difference. The inspiration for believing that we can make a difference is found during these 50 days of the Easter Season leading up to Pentecost. In today’s gospel we hear that the risen Jesus opened the disciples’ minds to understand Scriptures. As we move through these 50 days, living in the hope of the Resurrection, we can ask for guidance from the scriptures in knowing where we can make a difference.
Consider this story about an ordinary person who made a difference. When Chris Hooley showed his 11-year-old daughter Kaylee a touching video about making the homeless smile last summer, he had no idea that she would feel so inspired to give back to those in need herself that she would create a full-fledged charitable organization. Together, the father-daughter duo has spent the past 18 months hosting street events where they hand out food, water, clothing and toiletries to the homeless in Phoenix, Arizona, alongside their team of volunteers, and post videos of their outings on YouTube. With ReKindle, they hope to continue expanding their efforts to help the homeless across the country in the future.

The Cincinnati Festival Alliance is a group made up of Festival Chairs from the East side of Cincinnati. They provide the Poker tables and Poker dealers, as well as tables, chairs, and games for the local Festivals. The dealers are all volunteers and more are needed. The time commitment is at most 3-4 hours per month. We offer training on group facilitation, so no experience is necessary. Wednesday Church Night Topic – Suicide Prevention

Loss of a loved one, friend, neighbor, colleague, or other acquaintance to suicide is devastating. Importantly, there is hope and help for persons contemplating suicide, and you can help others in need. QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer -- three simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help.
A Gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that
someone may be contemplating suicide. Gatekeepers include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, coaches, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide.
As a QPR-trained Gatekeeper, trainees receive background on the prevalence of suicide and learn to
• Recognize the warning signs of suicide.
• Know how to offer hope.
• Know how to get help and save a life.
Our Presenters: Melanie Palmer and Scott Stephens
Melanie Palmer is an Independently Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with Supervisory Status and American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Approved Supervisor. She is the Director of Training for Child Focus, Inc, has worked in the outpatient and school-based programs at CFI, and taught a general psychology course at Southwestern College. She has over 20 years of experience working with clients on a variety of issues and challenges such as depression, anxiety, trauma, sexual abuse, marital conflict, and has extensive experience working with children and adolescents suffering from emotional and behavioral problems.
Scott Stephens is a Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervisory Status with 30 years of experience working with children and families. Scott is the Director of Parish Outreach for Catholic Charities. He is also an adjunct professor of social work at Xavier University and provides individual therapy to children and families at a private practice in Mason. He has worked in Foster Care, Adoption, and been the Executive Director of Pregnancy Center East in Cincinnati. Scott has a Bachelors and Masters in Social Work and a Masters in Pastoral Ministry from the Athenaeum of Ohio.

College students, stay-at-home parents, teachers, and seniors can serve. We need your gifts.
PROGRAM: Vacation Bible School (VBS)
NEEDS: Adult volunteers in Imagination Station (if you like science and making things), KidVid Cinema (if you can run a DVD player and talk to kids), and the Tropical Treat Café (if you are an organizer who knows your way around a kitchen), Decoration Director (if you have a knack for using art to set the scene), Finale Coordinator (if party planning is your thing), Adult Crew Leaders (to accompany small groups of kids each day). Also needed: Aides and part-timers in all areas.
COMMITMENT: VBS is from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., daily, from July 9-13. Adult time commitment depends on the job. Decoration Director and Finale Coordinator are NOT needed daily during the week, but before VBS begins and/or when it ends. Even if you can help only a couple days, WE NEED YOU. This is an awesome ministry for kids, teens and adults. It’s a win-win-win situation!

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is scheduled on Sundays either at Mass or at 12:30 p.m. Expectant parents should plan on attending the Baptismal Preparation Program, held six times a year. Call the Parish Office to schedule the Baptism and Preparation Program. The Sacrament of Baptism for adults and school age children is usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil, along with the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Preparation occurs in steps and stages throughout the year with weekly meetings on Sunday after 9:30 a.m. Mass. Call Emily Besl at 688-3143, or the Parish Office for more information.
SACRAMENTS OF HEALING The Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation or Confession) is celebrated each Saturday, 2:30-3:30 p.m., or by appointment with the Pastor. Seasonal Penance Services are also celebrated. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick may be scheduled by calling the Pastor before a medical procedure, or in the event of a serious illness, or after each Mass on the fifth Sunday of the month.When hospitalized, please notify the Parish Office; this is the only way we know if a parishioner has been hospitalized. In case of medical emergency or death, call the Parish Office and follow prompts.
SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT The Sacrament of Marriage is scheduled by calling the pastor or deacon to begin the process of marriage preparation, at least six months prior to the anticipated wedding date. A date for the wedding is set only after meeting with the pastor or deacon. Discernment for the Sacrament of Orders (ordination to the Priesthood and Diaconate) is facilitated by contacting the pastor or Vocation Director of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Those interested in pursuing Religious Life may also make these contacts.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Religious Education Program (R.E.P.) for children (ages 3 years through 8th Grade) begins each year in September and ends in May.
