The joy of recognizing Jesus The Fourth Sunday of Advent shows Elizabeth and her unborn son, John, reacting to the nearness of the unborn Christ. We know that Elizabeth immediately understood that Mary was pregnant with the Lord, because the Gospel says she was filled with the Holy Spirit. But how could the fetal John understand? How could he leap for joy while still in the womb? If it's true that an unborn baby is not a person with a soul until it takes its first breath, as is claimed by many who believe that abortion is okay, how could the unborn John recognize the presence of the unborn Savior? The faith to recognize the presence of Christ -- in the womb of people's lives, in the Eucharist, in the humanity of unborn children, etc. -- comes from being fully alive in the Holy Spirit, who was given to us fully during our baptisms. However, it takes a humble willingness to let God change our minds about what we think is true in order to be open to God's Spirit teaching us what is indeed true. John as a fetus was incapable of understanding anything, especially when it happened outside the womb, yet he leapt for joy. This teaches us that we don't need to see God working in the world or solving our personal problems before we can leap for joy. We don't have to understand what God is doing, and we don't even have to know his plans. The Holy Spirit enlivened the faith of Elizabeth and John through an act of grace that depended on Christ's future activity. For us, our faith is enlivened by the grace God provides in the Sacraments. The joy that comes from recognizing the presence of Christ is God's Christmas gift to us. It's a joy that's meant to last all year. It's a lifestyle, not a holiday. It comes from a faith that appreciates God for working mercifully in ways that we can see and ways that we cannot see, because we trust in his goodness. Even when we suffer or feel sorrow, we can learn to recognize the presence of Christ. And then what? Like John, we are called to be heralds of Christ's presence. How? First by sharing our joy with others. Questions for Personal Reflection: How much is the joy of Christ's Spirit within you affecting your outward life? What will you do this Christmas to become more aware of the Holy Spirit increasing your faith?

What is Christmas? The Church, in her mission to go through the world carrying the Good News, wanted to dedicate time to deepen, contemplate and assimilate the Mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God; at this time we know it as Christmas. Near the ancient Jewish festival of lights and seeking to give a Christian meaning to the pagan celebrations of the winter solstice, the Church took advantage of the moment to celebrate Christmas. At this time Christians through Advent prepare to receive Christ, "light of the world" (Jn 8, 12) in their souls, rectifying their lives and renewing their commitment to follow it. During Christmas time, as in the Easter Triduum of the Holy Week, we celebrate the redemption of man thanks to the presence and surrender of God; but unlike the Paschal Triduum in which we remember the passion and death of the Savior, at Christmas we remember that God became man and lived among us. As the sun clears the darkness at dawn, the presence of Christ bursts into the darkness of sin, the world, the devil and the flesh to show us the way forward. With his light he shows us the truth of our existence. Christ himself is the life that renews the fallen nature of man and nature. Christmas celebrates that renewing presence of Christ who comes to save the world. The Church in her role as mother and teacher through a series of celebrations seeks to make man aware of this important fact for the salvation of his children. For this reason, it is necessary that all parishioners live with a true sense the richness of the real and profound experience of Christmas. Finally, it is necessary to remember that during Christmas we celebrate on three consecutive days, December 26, 27 and 28, three holidays that make us present the total surrender to the Lord:

Saint Stephen, martyr who represents those who died for Christ voluntarily. Saint John the Evangelist, who represents those who were willing to die for Christ but did not get killed. Saint John was the only Apostle who risked being with the Virgin at the foot of the cross.

The Innocent Saints who represent those who died for Christ without knowing it. © ACI Prensa

Stewardship Reflection Reflexión “For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy.” (LUKE 1:44) When you hear the scripture readings and Gospel reading each Sunday, do you “leap for joy?” If not, don’t blame the lecturer or priest, rather look inside yourself. Do you prepare for Mass each week or do you just show up and expect to be entertained? We are called to be active participants, not passive by-standers.
