FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT FEBRUARY 17, 2013

From Msgr. Figliozzi

Scriptural Reflection for the Week “Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil.” (see Luke 4:1-13) As we begin the Lenten season, this Scripture verse makes real for us the struggle between good and evil that lurks in every soul—between selflessness and selfishness. Jesus was like us in every way but sin. He even exposes Himself to the tempta-tion of the devil so that we may know we have a Savior and Redeemer that is able to take upon Himself all the sins of the world. We therefore are unafraid to confront the dark-ness within us for we never have to confront it alone - un-less we choose to! To confront sin with Jesus leads to the victory of eternal life. To confront sin without Jesus leads to the defeat that is eternal death. We use this period of Lent to help us see our need for Jesus and the salvation only He is able to offer us. Lenten Examination of Conscience • Have I love and reverence for God’s name? • Have I offended God in swearing falsely or taking His

name in vain? • Have I shown disrespect for the Blessed Virgin Mary

and the Saints? • Do I keep Sundays and feast days holy by taking a full

part, with attention and devotion in the Mass? • Have I fulfilled the precept of annual confession and of

Holy Communion during Easter Season? • Are there false gods that I worship by giving them great-

er attention and deeper trust than I give to God: money, shopping, food and drink, leisure, occult practices, etc.?

An Act of Contrition “Lord Jesus, Son of God, be merciful to me a sinner.” Station of the Cross Fridays at St. Vincent’s after the 8:30am Mass. Fridays at St. Catherine’s at 7:30pm (followed by the opportunity for confession). Last Week’s Collection $3,917.00 Thank you for your support. One Final Thought “We have to pray on behalf of those who do not pray.” Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

Stewardship….. 1st Sunday of Lent

Reflection Today’s first reading describes the offering of first fruits the people of Israel were to present to the Lord in thanksgiving for their deliverance from Egypt and the gift of the promised land. Is my offering at today’s Mass an appropriate response to the many blessings the Lord has given me?

Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who share their first fruits by using their talents and resources to welcome the newest members of our parish community through hospitality and invitation.

LENT AT HOME By Rev. Johnny R. Mendonca

Lent began on Ash Wednesday; let’s ask ourselves again before it gets too late in the season – What can I do during this period of time to grow closer to God? What I’d like to propose during this Lenten season is to think of ways you can be reminded of the season in your daily life. One way to do this is by bringing the Lenten Sunday readings into your home. Here’s a few suggestions on just how to do it. Each Sunday we, of course, have a first reading, a responsorial psalm, a second reading and then the Gospel. I propose that you can bring some of the symbolism and meaning of these readings into your home. I propose that you create a ‘Lenten Scripture Time’ that will help you through this journey with the Lenten Sunday readings. For your ‘Lenten Scripture Time’ pick a place in your home where you can be relaxed in an atmosphere of peace. It may be helpful to design a small space in your home that encourages prayer and reflection. If possible, create a table scape environment that re-minds you daily of the season of Lent. You might use a small pur-ple cloth—the color signifies repentance. You may fill a small bowl with sand or rocks reminding you of the isolation Jesus experi-enced in the desert or garden while He prayed and reflected. Do you have your bible and a small crucifix? Did you pick up your ‘nail of remembrance and prayer card’ on Ash Wednesday? Spend a few moments in silence before your time with scripture preparing to ’hear’ the Word of God in your heart. There is a message in all Scripture; the writings were inspired by God. The words hold for us today a meaning just as they did for all those who have gone before us. Imagine yourself hearing a prophet speak or having a letter of Paul shared with you firsthand. What would it be like to be sitting and listening to a story, a para-ble, being shared by Jesus during this time as he travelled and spoke to the crowds and disciples? How can you bring this to life in your home? First Read … read the words of Scripture quietly to yourself, and then again aloud. Take time in your reading, listen to your voice and hear the words. Then Reflect … give yourself quiet time to think about what you just read. What did it mean? What specific words jumped out to you? How did it make you feel? What do you think the message was for you? Finally Pray … pray for inspiration, direction and guidance. Pray-ing with the Scriptures during this special time and allowing the Word of God to speak, enlighten and guide us is a way for us to make a commitment to grow closer to Him. Again, LET US PRAY: Lord Jesus, in these weeks when we remember your time of fasting and temptation in the desert, help us to better learn to find and love you in our neighbor, recognize and serve you in your creation, and hear and follow you in Scripture.

New 2013 IRA Charitable Rollover Opportunity

The IRA charitable rollover was revived in the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012.

What’s called a rollover is actually a “qualified charitable distribution” that can be made to our Parish. Here’s how to do it: ♦ If you are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift ♦ If your IRA is a traditional or Roth ♦ If you don’t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will free of federal and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD). The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified chari-table distribution". In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form. Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution. Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to contribute $5,000 to our Parish. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, she directs the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2013 directly to the Parish as a 2013 gift. She will not be subject to income tax on her $5,000 qualified charitable distribution.
