SESSION 4: MAXIMIZING PROFITS THROUGH DEVELOPINGCONTENT – PART ONEThis session will examine how large-scale venues have generated revenue through non-traditional content. Case studies will include the Telenor Arena in Norway, host of the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, one of the largest live TV shows in Europe.

Developing non-traditional content for major and secondary marketsBrad Parsons, chief executive ocer andEd Rubinstein, chief operating ocer - Arena Network IncAs major musical artists reduce the number of dates they tour, it becomes more important for live entertainment venues to pursue non-traditional events to ll their event calendar. The Arena Network has been involved in the routing of two such successful events within the past two years: Walking With Dinosaurs, The Live Experience and the 2008 Tour of Gymnastics Superstars, featuring the gold medal-winning US Olympic gymnastics team. Hear how these tours were conceived, routed, and marketed.

Arena design: maximum flexibility = maximum revenue generationDonald R. Dethlefs, chief executive ocer - Sink Combs DethlefsIn the world of modern-day arenas one of the most important aspects of successful arena design is that of exibility. The ability of the arena to host a wide range of events for the community it serves, and the ability of the building to accommodate all future needs, is paramount to nancial success. To guarantee this exibility, each possible event and the ability to accommodate it successfully needs to be considered. This includes ‘out of the box’ events such as cultural festivals and unique sporting events. With maximum exibility comes the responsibility of successfully serving the patron for all functions. Seating congurations and various capacities will be calculated for each event. The support areas of the building and the seating congurations must also allow the event to

take place in the optimal manner while maintaining operational expenses. Great arena design means optimal sightlines for each event that will take place in the facility. Dierent events will require dierent capacities, and it is important that a large-scale arena has the exibility to be downsized for certain events while still maintaining intimacy for event patrons. Seating congurations must be determined to allow the spectators to be as close to the action as possible, creating an exciting venue for patron and participant alike..

Part 1: The key to making profit: how can we triple the number of big-time events compared with a traditional soccer venue?Einar Schultz, managing director - Telenor Arena, NorwayThe new Telenor Arena opened in February, just outside Oslo, Norway. One of the objectives is to increase its use far beyond the traditional ‘every second Sunday’, and into a living arena. The presentation will address the most important issues and lessons learned including: design and planning, operational eciency, commercial and nancial planning. Examples and key gures from various events will be presented.

Part 2: Eurovision Song Contest 2010 – five weeks until wewelcome over 100 million TV viewers live to the Telenor ArenaThe second part of the presentation will discuss the plans for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. This is one of the largest live TV shows in Europe, with artists from 45 European countries.

Additional speakers to be conrmed

SESSION 5: LUXURY SUITE AND PREMIUM SEAT SALES – AN END TO THE GOLDEN YEARS?This session will examine the impact of the global economic crisis on revenue generation through luxury suite and premium seat sales. How can an innovative seating design solution help venue operators manage their opportunistic business? What methods are existing stadia using to try to keep revenues in this sector as high as possible?

Christopher Lee, senior principal - Populous, presentation title to be conrmed

Revenue driven through design – how correct seating can be a crucial revenue streamSheldon King, director - The Product PeopleThis presentation will illustrate how an innovative seating design solution can help venue operators manage their opportunistic business amid the changing face of global sport and entertainment. With a focus on the legacy and revenue opportunities of venue operators, the ability of a venue to adapt to market demands is key to its success in this global economic and ecological climate. The presentation will explore how a venue that can oer the service, the seating capacity and the business solution gets the job, and the TV revenue.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way!Ebru Koksal, general manager - Galatasaray Stad ASThis session will examine how Galatasaray Football Club successfully implemented luxury box, VIP seating and other revenue growth strategies, despite being faced with ongoing construction delays and dicult economic conditions. SESSION 1:INDUSTRY ROUND-TABLE DISCUSSION – CURRENTAND FUTURE INDUSTRY TRENDS – PART ONEThis session will feature leading industry experts debating current trends in the market and the issues they feel will shape the future of sports venue design and development, both in North America and overseas. Topics covered will include:• The role stadia can play in enhancing the emotional experience for spectators• Growing demand for multifunctional venues to increase revenue• Operational challenges found in new-generation stadia/arenas/spring training facilities• How far is ‘too far’ in terms of premium spaces, technology, and entertainment peripheral to the event?• What lessons can be gleaned from the last 20-year cycle of professional/international stadia?• How have owner expectations changed in the past decade, for design, operations and revenue (ex.

spring training facilities weren’t seen as money makers years ago – now they are expected to makesubstantial revenue)?

• What geographic locations oer the strongest opportunity for sports growth internationally?• Where do we see professional sports 20 years from now?• What sports, if any, seem to remain untapped markets or are poised for growth?• With the signicant costs of most stadia projects, what responsibility do publicly funded (either full or partial) venues have as civic resources/legacies? • Is it better to forgo maximum sales of a few events in order to optimize the building capacity and

construction for a smaller capacity? Should buildings be slightly smaller than they are often built?• In what ways can a building be future proofed most eectively?

SESSION 12: MAXIMIZING PROFITS THROUGH DEVELOPINGCONTENT – PART TWOThis session will examine how smaller-scale venues have become ‘street smart’ in generating revenue in very creative and innovative ways, without the reliance on a large venue operator.

Small facility, small market – BIG ideas!Jane Cada-Sharp, general manager - Arenas/Crystal CentreMunicipally owned and operated facilities aren’t all hamstrung by bureaucracy, and the Crystal Centre, located in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada has been given much freedom to ll its event calendar. Concerts and hockey are a huge part of the entertainment and sport pie, but they aren’t the whole pie. The never-ending journey to nd those all-important new ideas has been a blast, and although our venue might be small, we are mighty in our approach to event generation and lling those dark days.

Building a talent-based facility – investing in our human capitalPaul L. Pickard, president - Wings Stadium/Kalamazoo WingsDuring these economic challenges we all look for creative and innovative ways to generate revenue. As a small, privately owned venue in a tertiary market, we try to become ‘street smart’. As we continued this journey it became apparent that we could maximize prots by developing content, that ‘content’ is our human capital (our people). By creating a culture of engaged and inspired associates we could meet the needs, wants and desires of our clients and treat our patrons to a positive entertainment experience every single visit. This has become the focus of ‘building a talent-based facility’ in a ‘talent-driven community’.

SESSION 11: SUSTAINABILITY AND THE ENVIRONMENTEnvironmental consideration is a relatively new factor in sports venues, but already one of its key drivers. This session will examine the impact of venues signing up for LEED certication, plus programs that engage people in the venue and the club(s), with recent project examples.

Sustainable stadium projects – something good in the neighborhoodPete Bradshaw, head of corporate responsibility - Manchester City Football ClubSports stadia are often impressive venues, making a striking physical impact on the horizon and in their locality. However, carefully thought-out and with managed processes, the impact that can be generated reaches much further: programs that engage people in the venue and the club(s); capacity to promote local purchasing, create local employment and, as such, realize local wealth. LEED for sports: current and future impactDustin Schafer, director of sustainable services - Henderson Engineers IncorporatedThe LEED rating system has taken hold in the building industry as the standard method of measuring the environmental impact of a facility. While it is generally applicable across a wide range of project types, there are some challenges presented when it comes to sports and, in particular, to stadia design. This presentation will briey cover the LEED NC rating system, highlighting changes between past and present versions, but will quickly focus on a recent case study for the design and certication of a new arena in the Pacic Northwest. Special attention will be paid to the the cost and design implications of deciding to pursue LEED certication.

Sustainability opportunities for stadia and arenasWolfgang Werner, director of Sustainability - Thornton TomasettStadia and arenas are highly specialised facilities with characteristics and functional demands that dier signicantly from those of conventional commercial, industrial and residential buildings. By their nature they tend to have relatively large footprints, both literally and in terms of resource consumption and waste generation, and too often opportunities for smart sustainability approaches and associated potential benets go unrealized. This presentation will explore how some of the seemingly ‘not so green’ traits of arenas and stadia can be harnessed to integrate high-performance sustainability technologies and strategies into existing or new facilities – illustrated by some successful real-life examples.

SESSION 12: MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER (MLS) ISSUESThis session will examine trends in soccer-specic stadia design, construction, and technology, what the future holds for new stadia in the league and a case study of Rio Tinto Stadium, home of the MLS team Real Salt Lake.

Soccer-specific stadia: trends of the past, present, and futureCharlie Thornton, senior vice president - Icon Venue GroupThis presentation will discuss the trends in soccer-specic stadia design, construction, and technology from the speaker’s experience with a wide range of Major League Soccer facilities. Charlie will discuss stadium features that were trendsetting, and how the stadia have evolved over the years. Similarly, he will discuss what the future holds for new stadia in the league.

Rio Tinto – design reflectionMatthew Rossetti, president - RossettiDavid Kerschner, SVP development - SCP Worldwide LLCThe discussion will focus on how one of the main challenges of the project was to educate project stakeholders, including the political and cultural base of Utah and the greater Salt Lake City area, on the sport of soccer at a professional level. The demographics revealed a large population of youth players, but the challenge was how to translate that into building a fan base for the expansion team.

This process of education continued into the design of the stadium, directed by Dave Checketts as a key principal, for establishing long-term support for the club. Most of the American population grew up understanding traditional sports such as baseball and football, but have little understanding of the rules and stats associated with soccer. A discussion of technology and design features addressing this goal will be presented.

Additionally, the stadium site is located at the foot of the picturesque Wasatch Mountain range, and had to respect the very strong architectural style of Utah and compliment, not challenge, the established landscape.

Finally, the stadium is the rst piece of a large-scale mixed-use development that is to occur over the next decade. Important decisions had to be made in regards to the siting and design features of the stadium that would facilitate and contribute to the planned development. The client was instrumental in sticking to his vision and committing resources to design features that may not function now as they will with the full build-out, such as the iconic grand stairs.
