THE MASTERCLASS
Stadslab European Urban Design Laboratory and Eindhoven City Council are pleased to announce the Stadslab Masterclass: Eindhoven 2050.
The Master Class is an exciting and intense 8-day program during which we will devote ourselves to envisioning the cumulative ef-fects on our cities of disruptive, game-changing innovations in the coming decades. We believe that the problems that challenged designers in the twentieth century are simply not the problems that will define the twenty-first. If we are to deal with what Bruce Mau has called the “massive change” that seems to be characteristic of our time, we will have to redefine the basic design parameters of urbanism and architecture and study the process of developing qualities of built and unbuilt environments.
The Master Class is open to design professionals—architects, planners, urban designers, landscape architects—at all levels of experience. Stadslab Master Classes are a collaborative process between designers, stakeholders and experts. It will not be just a theoretical exercise but an attempt to define the critical architectural and socio-economic challenges of tomorrow which will influence planning, program energy, finance and management concepts of today.
URBAN DESIGN LAB EINDHOVEN
Eindhoven Innovation Capital
Europe is for many the most desirable place in the world thanks to its abundance of beautiful cities, high quality of life and rich culture. But with the rapid urbanization of the world how can Europe remain competitive in this evolving global economy? The existence of the EU government hints at a future where borders completely disappear and mega regions appear. Eindhoven is spectacularly situated in the core of the Randstad/Brussels/Ruhr/ Region. But how should Eindhoven position itself within this region?
Currently, Eindhoven is the most innovative city in the world with nearly 3 times more patents per resident than the second most in-novative place (Silicon Valley)! But how can future city design help to foster innovation in this modest city, in its leading companies and in its people? Cities such as Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, etc are considered great beautiful cities to travel to, work and live in. How can Eindhoven, not a classically attractive city, transform its urban form to be a place that future generations desire?
These are just a few of the questions that will be tackled in the Eindhoven 2050 Master Class and MA+U Design Studio.
Through local trend research in conjunction with future societal forecasts we will establish via a method of scenario thinking future potentials/urban interventions for the city of Eindhoven
STRENGTHENING EINDHOVEN
The future potentials of Eindhoven will be explored via ‘Research by Design’. By understanding existing realities, then extrapolating them through the lens of future city trends we can begin to design for 2050 now.
These design study are neither blueprints nor will they define an ultimate answer. They are conversational material which will be discussed among politicians designers and civic organizations, they feed and steer an open and iterative communication and thinking process. The scenarios will enable us to formulate more precise the future questions and future ambitions and explore the new possibilities and potentials of Eindhoven. The studies should support the urban transformation process and be adapted to the specific challenges, potentials and dynamics of a new urban society.
THE TEAM
The Master Class will be supervised by Marc Glaudemans and Caro van de Venne, while other experts will collaborate as lecturers or visiting critics.
