From the Rector Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R. Staffed by The Redemptorists This Thursday, August 29th, we celebrate the feast of the Passion of St. John the Baptist. As you know, John was beheaded by King Herod, he murdered because he “spoke truth to power”. Among other things, I have always honored John the Baptist as a man of deep integrity, John did not care who anyone was, if he saw injustice, he spoke against it, if he saw people being treated with disregard and disre- spectfully, he challenged it. As you know from the gospel story, John challenged King Herod and as you may imagine, nobody challenged King Herod! Herod managed to have his brother killed so that he could marry his wife. The gospel tells us that John confronted Herod: “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife”. Herod had John imprisoned, his brother’s wife, Herodias made sure that John was beheaded. In some countries there are men and women imprisoned and tortured because they have spoken against government leaders. In our own country there are men and wom- en who have lost their jobs or who have been ostracized and shamed because the dared to speak the truth that others will not speak. Sometimes, we forget that we wor- ship a Lord who was crucified because he spoke the truth that others did not want to hear. The death of John the Baptist deeply disturbed Jesus, besides his love for John, Jesus could see in John’s death, his own future death. Sometimes, we fail to speak out against injustice because of the fear of being ridiculed, inciting another’s anger, or being ostracized. The Passion of John the Baptist give you and me a chance to pray for the grace to speak the truth no matter the consequences. MASS INTENTIONS FROM THE RECTOR

NEWS & EVENTS

StewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipStewardshipReflection“For behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.” (Luke 13:30)

Our standards in society are different from God’s standards. We often rank people by what they have, how powerful they are, or how suc-cessful they are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the same earthly standards. When God asks you, “what have you done with the gifts I have given you?” How will you respond?

Gift of One HourPlease remember that we depend on your weekly offering to continue the ministry of our parish. We ask that you consider giving the equivalent of one hour of your weekly salary. If you can not commit one hour at this time, we ask that you contrib-ute at least $5 as a minimum offering for the upkeep and mission of the church. Every gift will be used wisely and carefully. Thank You!

RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of AdultsDo you know an adult 18 years of age and older who has never been baptized and is interested in the Catholic Church? Do you know an adult who has been away from the church for a long time and has never made their First Communion or Confirmation? Do you know and adult who is a member of another faith but is interested in the Catholic Faith? Please invite them to simply leave their name and phone number at the Rectory office.

School Supply Drive“Fill The Backpack” is a school supply drive to benefit students of the Mission Hill Community. Please consider donating an item to help fill the backpacks from July 1st through August 10th. Items to donate include: No. 2 Pencils, Spiral Notebooks, backpacks, pens, looseleaf paper, crayons, binders, highlighters, pocket folders, markers, rulers, glue sticks. Backpacks filled with supplies will be given to students in August. Help ensure our students are equipped to learn by getting them the supplies they need to succeed! Please bring your donated supplies either to the parish office, or place them in the baskets at the Holy Family altar.

7th Annual Walk for the PoorOur parish chapter of the St. Vincent DePaul Society will hold the annual Friends of the Poor Walk on Saturday, September 28, 2019. This event is part of a national program that provides funding for local Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Con-ferences. Funds raised from these events remain local, allowing local SVdP Con-ferences to provide emergency assistance to those in need. The walk is 5.2 miles beginning and ending at the Basilica.

Fall Women’s RetreatThe theme of the retreat this year: “The Call to Holiness.” This retreat will invite you to reflect on your personal call to holiness and to the fullness of life in Christ. Octo-ber 11-13, 2019 at the San Alfonso Retreat Center, Long Branch, NJ. Please sign up at the office if you are interested in attending. We have a bus that can take 35 wom-en.
