Holy Scripture, the Word of God, is filled with so much meaning for us each and eve-ry week, if we only listen carefully and ab-sorb what we are being told. In the last verse of today’s First Reading we hear, “Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.” It is speaking of Sts. Peter and John who traveled to Samar-ia to more or less confirm those who had been baptized there. In fact, most historians

believe that the laying on of hands in the New Testament is the origin of the Sacrament of Confirmation. In the Apostolic Consti-tution on the Sacrament of Confirmation, Pope Paul VI affirmed that laying on of hands in the Sacrament of Confirmation contin-ues the grace of Pentecost (on Sunday, June 4 this year).

If you have been confirmed, you have experienced the laying on of hands. That means the Holy Spirit has been called to bless, sanctify, transform, and give grace to you. You have received the Holy Spirit, which is the ongoing life of the Church. You have been anointed with the Spirit of God. That means you have been called to not only live out that Spirit, but also to live a life which shares that Spirit with your parish and with others.

When the priest or Bishop imposes hands, it is called epiclesis, a Greek word that means invocation. The laying on of hands is an important part of the ordination of priests and deacons. St. Paul re-minded us all in his First Letter to Timothy, “Do not neglect the gift you have, which was conferred on you through the prophetic word with the imposition of hands.” Copyright © 2010www.THECATHOLICSTEWARD.com

For the WeekFor the WeekFor the WeekFor the Week A Thought From St. Francis De SalesA Thought From St. Francis De SalesA Thought From St. Francis De SalesA Thought From St. Francis De Sales We must learn what God wants of us, and having learned it, we must try to carry it out, if not generously, at least cheerfully. That is not all. Even if we were des-tined to look after pigs all our lives, or do the most me-nial and lowly things in the world, we should love the will of God and the obligations it imposes upon us. No matter what state God places us in, the goal of perfection is the same. This is the goal toward which we all must aim, and whoever comes closest to that goal is the most victorious.

People of God Are on a Journey to Meet God, Deepen FaithPeople of God Are on a Journey to Meet God, Deepen FaithPeople of God Are on a Journey to Meet God, Deepen FaithPeople of God Are on a Journey to Meet God, Deepen Faith “Each of us,” the Pope ex-plained, “is on the way to the fullness of our own time. Each of us will reach the moment in which life ends and there we must find the Lord. Each of us is on the go,” and Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit to guide our way.

Francis reminded of the importance of going to Confession as we make this journey. He invited faithful to ask themselves whether during confession, there is not only the shame for having sinned, but also the understanding that in that moment they are taking a “step forward on the way to the fullness of times.”

“To ask God for forgiveness is not something automatic,” Francis acknowledged, saying, “It means that I understand that I am on a journey, part of a people that are on a journey,” and that eventu-ally “I will find myself face-to-face with God, who never leaves us alone, but always accompanies.”

Pope Francis concluded, pointing out that this “is the great work of God’s mercy.”

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In his 2016 World Communications Day Message, Pope Francis reminds us that "communication has the power to build bridges, to enable encounter and inclusion, and thus to enrich society". The Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) collection helps bring the gospel mes-sage to the public square so that all can know the Word of God. As people continue to access more and more infor-mation on mobile devices, there is an increased need to provide faith resources on these platforms as well. With your support of the CCC, the daily readings are availa-ble as free podcasts to download and listen to when on the go. In addition, the readings are also available in Eng-lish and Spanish by email subscription. By supporting the CCC, people from all over are able to experience the Scriptures in a new way and are never far from the Word of God. Your support of this collection helps to enrich society and to invite all to encounter the love of God. The Catholic Communication Campaign Collection will take place in the Diocese of Venice on May 27 and 28, 2017. Please remember that 50% of the funds collected will remain here in the Diocese of Venice to fund our local communications and evangelization projects which include the weekly broadcast of the televised Mass. I take this opportunity to assure you and your families of my continued consideration as well as my prayers. Thank you for your generosity!

Sincerely yours in Christ, + Frank J. Dewane

Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida

Bishop J. Kevin Boland, bishop emeritus of Savannah, Georgia, and Apostleship of the Sea (AOS) promoter, will celebrate a Mass in observance of Maritime Day on Saturday, May 20, at 12:10 PM, in the Crypt Church at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington.

Apostleship of the Sea (AOS) is a worldwide Catholic maritime ministry that reaches out to seafarers, fishers, their families, port personnel and all who work or travel on the high seas. The ministry shows the Church's care and concern to seafarers who are often away from home for many months because of the nature of their work and lifestyle. In the United States, AOS is present in 53 mari-time ports in 26 states, and in 48 dioceses. More infor-mation is available at: http://www.usccb.org/aos.
