THE CHAIR OF ST. PETER THE APOSTLE

February 22 In brushing up for “Catholic Jeop-ardy,” it might help to know that there is only one feast on the calendar for a thing, rather than a person or mystery. It’s for a chair: Saint Peter’s chair in fact After the Resurrection, there can be no doubt that the disciples reserved a special place for Simon Peter in the upper room. Lat-er, Peter became the bishop of Antioch in today’s Syria, the place where we were first called Christians. From there, he went to Rome, the center of the Empire, where it is said that Peter sat in a chair in the house of Priscilla and Aquila to instruct his flock. Je-sus, in entrusting the keys of the Kingdom to Peter and his successors, entrusted his com-passion and mercy to them, and charged them with pointing to the Kingdom of God. Com-passion and mercy are to resonate through their teaching. Since the ancient sign of a teacher is the chair (“disciple” literally means one who sits at the feet of a teacher), Peter’s chair has long been treasured. Today there is a symbol-ic shrine of Peter’s chair above the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. This monu-ment is the last work of Bernini, a huge bronze throne supported by four doctors of the Church: Augustine and Ambrose from the Western Church, and Chrysostom and Atha-nasius from the East. High above it is the ala-baster window of the descent of the Holy Spirit. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Reflecting on God’s Word We live in a country where we pr ize our freedom, cling to our right to choose, and even define our home-land as “the land of the free.” Today’s scriptures remind us that along with rights come responsibilities. We are to respond to our God who made us and calls us to be a peo-ple of the new covenant, ratified by the saving death of God’s Son on the cross. “If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you,” says Ben Sira (Sirach 15:15). For the Jewish people the law was a blessing and those who chose to keep the law would be blessed with life. That choice is still before us today. Jesus’ teachings reveal his wisdom in understand-ing the law of the Mosaic covenant. His grasp of what was at the heart of the law can be clearly found in the long form of today’s Gospel. While there is an option for a shorter version, spend some time with the longer read-ing (Matthew 5:17–37). We are to live as kin in what has been called the “kin-dom” of God. In a world that justifies preventative strikes, Jesus forbids not only killing but even getting angry and bearing a grudge. He teaches that reconcilia-tion takes priority over worship, that the prohibition against adultery extends even to looking with lust at an-other, reducing a person to an object for self-gratification. Finally, he asks us not to swear but to speak with simplic-ity and integrity. Some might dismiss all this as impossible to achieve. But, as a young virgin was once told: “Nothing will be impossible for God” (Luke 1:37). —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright © 2013, World Library Publications. All rights re-served.

Stewardship - A Way of Life Music Ministry

Living God’s Word We can pray for the Holy Spirit to open our minds to un-derstand what is at the heart of Jesus’ teachings, and that we both discern what God asks of us and respond wholeheartedly. Thus we witness to others what it means to walk in the law of the Lord. Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications.

Knights of Columbus “Coats for Kids” Program

The Knights of Columbus has a national program called “Coats for Kids” that provides free coats for deserving children during cold winter months. In December, our council bought 48 coats which were distributed to needy children on the Outer Banks by brother Knight Nick Facci and his wife Carol at an event held by the Elizabethan Gardens.

If you are visiting the Outer Banks, please consider dropping off surplus food on your way home. There are baskets in the Church’s Gathering Space at Holy Redeem-er for food donations. All food donations are welcome, but the Beach Food Pantry is especially in need of the following items: laundry detergent (30-40 oz.), bar soap, single wrapped rolls of toilet paper, ketchup, mustard, salad dressings, oil, healthy snacks, coffee, tea, nutritious cereal, oatmeal & instant oatmeal, mayonnaise, canned vegetables (NO green beans or garbanzo beans), canned spaghetti sauce, canned meats, tuna fish, canned soup with at least 7 grams of protein and unopened small trav-el toiletries. WE NEED Paper Bags. Your donations are appreciated. Please do not give out-of-date, opened, used or perishable items, as health laws do not allow us to distribute these items. For more information on the Pan-try’s mission and needs, please visit: beachfoodpantry.org

Friday Stations of the Cross

and Soup Supper During Lent we are all invited to

discover the true purpose of our beautiful Stations of the Cross as an inspiration for prayer and contemplation on the journey of Jesus to his cross, death and resurrec-tion. Each Friday during Lent (February 28 to April 3), our faith community will gather in to prayerfully remember Christ's journey to Calvary. Im-mediately following the Stations, we will share a light supper of soup and bread prepared each week by a differ-ent Parish group. This supper of the poor will put us in mind of our less fortunate brothers and sisters. An offer-ing will be taken up to help feed those whose plates are empty. February 28 will be hosted by the Liturgical Ministers.

Security Update ALL outside locks have been eliminated, and the only entry to the locked building is through the three electronic locks - the front door, the choir door, and the education wing. If you currently have an outside key and have an ongoing need to enter the building when it is locked, please call Tim Gregory at (252) 261.4700 about obtain-ing a key fob. NB: The current keys will still work on the inside locks (sacristy, etc.).

Widows and Widowers Luncheon Please join us for lunch on Thursday, February 20 at Rooster's Southern Kitchen, 804 S. Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills. This is a great way to share a meal and have a good time getting to know other parishioners. For more information, please contact Sheila Chieco at [email protected]

On Sunday, March 8 at 2:00 PM, Dr. John Pendergrass, Director of Child and Youth Protection for the Diocese of Raleigh, will offer training on how to recognize and report the signs of child endangerment. The training will be held at Holy Redeemer in the parish hall. Father Bill has requested that all volunteers attend this training, and complete the accompanying back ground check so that we may all be ready to respond to a child in need. If you volunteer in any ministry and have not yet taken this course, please call Val Cummings at the parish office, (252) 261.4700 to confirm your attend-ance. All are welcome to attend even if you are not yet volunteering in a ministry. This is an enlightening presentation given by a highly qualified presenter which will enable our parish to continue to be a place of safety for the children entrusted to our care. Thank you.

Salesian Sunday Reflection

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 16, 2020

Today the Responsorial Psalm tells us to “Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord.” St. Francis de Sales elaborates on this intention: How do we “follow the law of the LORD” so as to live well? First, we must purify all our intentions as far as we can. We must make a firm purpose to use the day well for the intention of living as best we can in conformity with God’s ways. An-ticipate what tasks, transactions and occasions for serving God you may meet to-day. What temptations will you be exposed to, such as anger, self-centered love, or some other irregularities? Carefully prepare yourself to avoid, resist, and overcome whatever might hinder you from authentically living Jesus. To follow the law of the Lord, first make a holy resolution to grow in the love Je-sus exemplified. To prepare yourself to put this resolution into practice, ask our Savior to help you make the best use of the means available to you to grow in holy love, and serve Him. Admit that you alone cannot carry out your decision to avoid evil and do the good that God desires of you. Hold your heart in your hands and offer it with your good desires to Our Savior. Ask Him to take your heart under His protection and strengthen it so to grow in His authentic love. To follow the law of the Lord, train yourself to pray. Receive the sacraments often. As you perform the important tasks of your vocation, never forget to practice hu-mility, gentleness, patience, and simplicity, virtues that grow like flowers at the foot of the Cross. As you care for your family with all the diligence required, bring these souls to love God by infusing good inspirations into their hearts. Great opportunities to serve God rarely present themselves but little ones are frequent. As you carry out your responsibilities so that they give glory to God, all your activities, even eating, drinking, sleeping or recreation, will be done in the name of God, who leads you to authentic wholeness through Jesus Christ.

Knights Council Lamb Program The Knights of Columbus LAMB Pro-gram of North Carolina, named after the biblical quotation, “Whatsoever you do to the Least Among My Brethren, that you

also do unto me.”- Matthew 25:40, provides grants to Dare and Currituck County for exceptional children's teachers for their class programs. The evening of January 27, 2020, the teachers were invited to Holy Redeemer to receive funds collected by the Knights during their annual LAMB campaign. Approximately $17,000.00 was distributed this year. Brother Knights and their guests were happy to hear how the individu-al teachers were able to use the money to help in their classrooms. The event was led by the LAMB chair-man brother Nick Facci. The Walter Gray award was given to brother Knight Brian Kelly for his great work in the campaign.

Ash Wednesday, February 26, 2020, and Good Friday, April 10, 2020, are days of fast-ing and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Absti-nence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, Church law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and Catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for Initiation into the Church or the renewal of Baptismal Promises at Easter.
