Home Learning Timetable

Rationale Home learning is a daunting prospect for most students. They will need support in finding ways

to make the process more manageable and achievable. In creating a plan or a timetable, students will be able to prioritise and organise their time more efficiently to ensure progress is still being made while at home. It allows students to realistically plan around other commitments at home, while maintaining a routine which will help them to focus on one task at a time. Some students may benefit from a detailed plan in which timings, breaks and other commitments are also planned for, whereas others may simply benefit from organising their subjects into certain days to avoid feeling overwhelmed and under pressure. It is advised that all students should follow some style of planning – whichever suits their needs best – in order to ensure they are utilising their time effectively, while still including time to relax, support families at home or engage in their personal interests outside of school.

How to use Students may wish to use the ‘suggested timetable’ but this may not suit all students, as every individual will have different activities to fit into their day. If the suggested timetable is not suitable, students can create their own personal timetable. Students are to fill in the relevant sections realistically. They should be reminded that this is for their own use – it needs to fit their own situations in order to work effectively. The aim is to come up with a weekly plan of slots for ‘working from home’. They should keep it relatively simple. This helps to avoid the situation where a student spends more time writing and changing their schedule than actually working. Reassure students that this is a guideline for working hours. During this time, students need to learn how to be flexible; if something clashes with the timetable they have created, they are not to worry. If this occurs, students need to be reminded that it is how students change plans to suit their lifestyles that will lead to the most successful home learners.

Name: _______________

The following steps will be used to construct your personal revision timetable:

Step 1: Current Free Time Think about when you have free time each day (be realistic!). Place a tick in the time slots where revision is available. Look at the example below and then complete your own free time timetable. Example:

Early Morning Late Morning Early

Afternoon Late Afternoon Early Evening Late Evening

Monday ✓

Tuesday ✓

Wednesday ✓

Thursday ✓

Friday ✓

Saturday ✓

Sunday ✓

Step 1•Current Free Time

Step 2•Dividing your time between subjects

Step 3•Is this enough time? subject priority

Step 4•Keep it under review

Now it’s your turn.

Step 2: Dividing Your Time Between Subjects

Now that you have identified the times when you available to work, identify:

Your subjects and prioritise the time you are going to give to each. The times that best suit you during the day (ideally you want 1 or 1½ hr slots)

My Subjects

Page 6: Staindrop Academy Home Learning Support Year 7-9staindropacademy.com/.../04/Home...Timetable-7-9-1.pdf · Home Learning Timetable Rationale Home learning is a daunting prospect for

Step 3: Is this enough time? Total the number of hours work for each subject:

Subject Number of hours

TOTAL

Example

Subject Number of hours

English 1 Hour

Maths 1 Hour

Science 1 Hour

History 1 Hour German 1 Hour

Geography 1 Hour

Creative 1 hour

TOTAL 7 hours (+ time for reading, challenge, physical wellbeing, SMSC and PSHCE)

Step 4: Keep it under review Make use of the above sequence to keep your revision under review. If some things are faster or slower than expected you can update your plan. Similarly, if other events or activities crop up, you will need to put them into your weekly plan and adjust the worktimes.

Remember to include allocated hours for each subject you have done in step 3 and factor in some time for wellbeing activities such as physical activity and reading. Careers will be an important part of Year 11, make use of free time or allocate time to research careers and post 16 providers.
