Stainless steel, a reflection of everyday life

Stainless steel is one of the most commonly used materials in everyday life, from breakfast to the office, passing via transport, schools, etc.

Stainless steel, playing a leading part in construction Eurostar Station, Waterloo (London) Petrona Tower (Kuala Lumpur) Chrysler Building (New York) La Géode (Paris)... This material is now used in all Building applications, from rooves, through decoration and street furniture, to facades.

With stainless steel builders can finally reconcile passion and boldness with safety « UGINE & ALZ has the means to meet the expectations of architects and contractors. Our range of stainless steels covers all requirements, from the simplest to the most sophisticated, with the most up to date, perhaps even the most unexpected effects. With stainless steel all daring innovations are permissible ». Philippe Richard, Head of the Building Department U&A

Strength, ductility, excellent mechanical properties...

Stainless steel has numerous advantages conferred upon it by the addition of alloying elements such as nickel, molybdenum, titanium or niobium… Corrosion resistance: Stainless steels are continuously protected from corrosion by a passive coat of chromium oxide, which is formed naturally on the surface. It this coat is damaged it regenerates naturally under certain conditions. ”Stainless steel, a challenge to the passing of time .. and to the weather”. Resistance to warm oxidation and creep: ”Stainless steel, a safe material in the case of fire”. Excellent mechanical properties: excellent stiffness in small thicknesses and easy to use (by stamping, bending, hydroforming, welding, brazing, etc.). “Stainless steel can be adapted sensibly to the wildest dreams…” Recycling and suitability for cleaning: « S nless steel a s hygiene co erns an as re ect for t environment ». Stainless steel is a timeless material, with eternal youth, which is not

nt just to be resistant, d rable, gienic, adaptable and recyclable. It combines modernity and permanence by standing the test of time. Properties of stainless steel

From the façade to the roof

Stainless steel is incorporated in the structure of all types public buildings, industrial buildings, office blocks, apartmhouses...

Stainless steel has many different applications throughout the shell of a building, both in the façade and the roof. Stainless steel is resistant to the worst weather conditions (rain, hail, snow or wind). It is also resistant to fire and very high temperatures (material class M0). Comparison of fire resistance of different materials

of buildings: ents, individual

See the table U&A stainless steels have been developed meet the most creative needs of the designers. UGINOX® and UGITOP® are in fact only too willing to comply with the most daring ambitions of the architects.

Why stainless steel?

Its aestheticism (play of light…) Its durability It is easy to use Its corrosion resistance Its mechanical properties Its low coefficient of expansion Its low weight per m² It is easy to clean ts perfect combination with other

materials (wood, cements, glass, etc).

U&A offers a whole range of products specially designed for building

Roofing: for all roofs

Thanks to their exceptional physical and mechanical properties, stainless steels are easy to use and all forms of roofing can be constructed. Stainless steel can be integrated perfectly into both historical sites and ultramodern districts, from Paris to Berlin, passing through Milan and Barcelona.

It gives distinction and style to buildings and contributes original aesthetics to the new architecture. Architefree re

cts are therefore given a completely in in all that they create.

The stainless steels UGITOP® , UGINOX FTE® and UGINO AME® Xare used:

in roofing fully supported: - by brackets - by heading joints

in self-supporting roofing: - single-skin trapezoïdal frame - double-skin trapezoidal frame - self-supporting section

imposes quite naturally its aesthetics and its intrinsic qualities of strength, icity of use…, not forgetting its recyclability at the end of its life.

The stainless steels UGINOX® and UGITOP® are used for different types of façades:

Street furniture

Stainless steel lights up the city Capable of being integrated into any landscape, stainless steel finds a whole host of applications in the field of street furniture. With stainless steel it is possible to play with any shape, any design, giving architects free rein to their most creative ideas: - the frame of advertising hoardings, - benches, - traffic lights, - lamp posts, ...as many objects as have to resist the worst attacks from weather and man.

Stainless steel is very easy to maintain (anti-graffiti, etc.), and it is shock resistant.

Interior decoration

Stainless steel lights up the interior of buildings

Everyday examples of applications:- escalators, - lift doors and cages- kitchen and bathroofittings...

Stainless steel is a material that is admirably suited to interior decoration. It allows a play on the light in certain spaces, it exudes pure aestheticism and is ultra-modern.

Resistant to fire, stainless steel is a safe material and provides an effective heat screen (fire doors, etc.).

Stainless steel, a material for all budgets

No, stainless steel is not expensive!

A cost that is recouped over time Selecting the material is an important step: the economists and architects calculate the profitability of their project in terms of the durability of the material. The choice of stainless steel is therefore very often preferred to other materials. Stainless steel is the material with the longest life and the best quality/time and price/time ratios. Moreover, thanks to its mechanical properties, stainless steel has small thickness applications. The price of stainless steel per m2 is therefore attractive.

Sustainable development

Stainless steel is a modern material which fully meets the requirements for sustainable development that has now become our priority for everyone. Durability, reliability, respect for the environment and a capacity for melting into the landscape are factors to be taken into account when carrying out a full ecological evaluation.

A safe, very hygienic product Stainless steel provides real protection against fire and constitutes an extremely efficient heat screen.

See the table Hygienic and used for manufacturing kitchen utensils and surgical instruments, stainless steel (including tin-plated) is the only material which does not discharge any particles that are harmful to man or the environment. Very clean, it is easy to maintain. A material that respects the environment Stainless steel is a “green” material. 100% recyclable. When a building comes to the end of its life, stainless steel is recovered and fully recycled, which helps to preserve nature and does not exhaust the natural resources of th e planet.

Durability Stainless steel is a durable material. With a minimum of care and maintenance it stands the test of time without damage. Resistant to corrosion, it keeps its appearance and preserves its numerous properties. The durability of stainless steel is not determined by the thickness used but by the choice of grade.

Assets of stainless steel: energy content and CO² emissions According to data available, stainless steel represents the solution to the lowest energy content for roofing. These advantages are extremely important when calculated over the long life of stainless steels (taking into consideration the resistance of other construction materials).

Façades

Stainless steel brings the façade into relief and provides a great many possibilities for architectural creation. It not only renders the building more durable but it also enables aesthetic structures to be designed by playing with mirror effects or mat finishes. Stainless steel can perform several functions in a façade: - the facing, i.e. the visible outer face - the woodwork, comprising the secondary framework and the openings - various products: fixings, waning etc. There are “all-steel” systems and stainless steel outer facings.

Roofing: one of the specialist applications of stainless steel

Stainless steel meets all the expectations of architects and designers on the look out for the most up to date forms and concepts, as well as the boldest. Resistant to bad weather and corrosion, stainless steel guarantees durable roofing. It is also resistant to major variations in temperature. Atmospheric exposure is one of the main criteria when selecting stainless steel as a roofing material, but there are other criteria such as: surface usage and appearance. UGITOP® and UGINOX® are stainless steels which have been adapted to the requirements of roofing. Their mat finish integrates well with both the urban and rural environment, traditional or modern, and UGITOP® in particular enables architects to play with the façade-roofing continuity by treating roofing as a fifth façade. You will find in this space U&A technical advice for constructing rooves in stainless steel, and we are at your disposal should you require further information and assistance in building your project.
