Michael ZsoltManager, Philatelic Australia Post

Welcome to this edition of the Australian Stamp Bulletin and a very special release marking the centenary of some of the best known Australian stamps. You may even have a number of the originals in your own collection.

The commemorative George V stamp issue, presented in an attractive block of four, marks 100 years since the George V 1d stamp was the denomination for the basic letter rate. The stamp issue brings a new and exciting philatelic product to the range; something collectors of Australian stamps will want to add to their collection.

We also mark the centenary of Red Cross in Australia. The organisation is responsible for some of the most important community aid projects and, as part of the wider international Red Cross organisation, has contributed to areas of the world where humanitarian aid is needed. With its establishment in Australia, shortly after the beginning of World War I, Red Cross was responsible for many of the support projects set up for our serving men and women.

A single stamp design to be released in May marks the G20 Leaders Summit 2014. The stamp is the result of a national secondary schools competition, with the winning design voted for by the public via a dedicated Facebook™ page.

Banjo Paterson was a great storyteller, and he wrote many evocative verse works often referred to as “bush ballads”. His works identify many of the characteristics of colonial Australians and their way of life; telling tales of wild bush brumbies and skilled horsemanship, to “daring do” and the humorous antics of Mulga Bill (a personal favourite). Paterson left his mark on the Australian literary landscape and the stamp issue celebrates four of his most memorable works.

Australian Red Cross was established in 1914, nine days after the commencement of World War I. The organisation grew at a rapid rate – by November 1914, New South Wales had 88 city or suburban branches and 249 country branches. The Society was accepted by the community from the beginning. Much of the World War I home front activities such as knitting socks and rolling bandages was done by local Red Cross branches.

Australian Red Cross supports and runs important projects whilst raising awareness about issues or problems. These include First Aid projects, Disaster and Emergency Services, Youth and Education.

The Mission of Australian Red Cross is: “To be a leading humanitarian organisation in Australia, improving the lives of vulnerable people through services delivered and promotion of humanitarian laws and values.”

Poet, journalist, editor and solicitor, Andrew Barton “Banjo” Paterson is arguably Australia’s master balladeer. The late 19th and early 20th centuries were the peak of this popular verse form in Australia, but Paterson’s renown and poetry has travelled very well across time. In 2014, we commemorate the 150th anniversary of his birth, on 17 February 1864.

Paterson’s use of a literary tradition of simple, rhyming, narrative poems adapted for singing proved popular. Published in December 1889, “Clancy of the Overflow” demonstrates Paterson’s romanticism for bush life, and perhaps his ambivalence to a career that tied him to both desk and city.

First published in 1890, “The Man from Snowy River” tells the tale of horsemen pursuing an escaped prizewinning colt in mountainous country. Written just prior to Federation, this ballad depicted something of an archetypal figure for a nation looking to forge a sense of itself: youthful, courageous and risk-taking.

“Waltzing Matilda” is probably the most famous of all Australian ballads, considered by some an unofficial national anthem. Paterson wrote it in 1895, when staying with friends at Dagworth station, Queensland.

“Mulga Bill’s Bicycle” strikes a humorous chord. Published in the Sydney Morning Herald in 1896, it was written at the height of the 19th-century bicycling craze.

The stamp design incorporates the Brisbane skyline – location for the G20 Leaders Summit 2014 event.

Release date 3 June 2014

Australia is the official host for the G20 Leaders Summit in 2014. The Summit will be held in Brisbane on 15 and 16 November at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. This will be the most significant meeting of world leaders that Australia has hosted.

Chairing the G20 in 2014 gives Australia an opportunity to influence the global economic agenda and to strengthen engagement with the world’s major economies. The G20 will also be an opportunity to showcase Brisbane, Queensland and Australia to member and non-member countries as a world-class destination for tourism, education and business. As many as 4,000 delegates and 3,000 media representatives from around the world are expected to attend.

In July 2013, all secondary schools across the country were invited to submit a design for the official G20 Australia Commemorative Stamp, to be put into circulation during Australia’s 2014 G20 presidency. The competition was a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their creative talent, and produce a design that best represents the G20 and Australia’s role as host.

There was a great response from secondary schools across Australia, with a range of unique designs submitted. Five shortlisted stamp designs were placed on the G20 Australia 2014 Facebook page. The winning design by MacKillop College, Werribee, Victoria was chosen by the Australian community, with over 3,000 votes cast.

A century ago, Australia’s stamp designs were “hot” political topics. Labor Postmaster-General, Charles Frazer developed the Kangaroo and Map design, but a few months later, his successor, the Liberal’s Agar Wynne, made plans to scrap it in favour of stamps featuring the monarch, King George V.

Together with the King’s profile, the new stamp design also featured a kangaroo, emu, sprig of wattle and the crown. Following earlier advice received from the British government about the depiction of the king on stamps, the Australian stamp would feature the same royal profile as depicted on Great Britain’s stamps.

The George V stamp was a 1d denomination for basic letter postage within Australia and to British Empire countries. With a view to making the stamp

look impressive it was decided to use intaglio with an initial print quantity of only 1.2 million, when the stamp was first issued on 9 December 1913. A further supply of 1.1 million 1d stamps was released in March 1914.

The letterpress method would be required to produce a permanent 1d George V stamp and for other frequently-used denominations. As the Stamp Printing Office in Melbourne had no suitable engraver to cut a letterpress die, an order was placed with London stamp printers, Perkins, Bacon & Co. The firm sub-contracted the actual engraving of the die to De La Rue, who were more experienced in letterpress stamp production.

Following completion of the stamp die, Perkins Bacon made four, steel printing plates of the 1d stamp, and five, non-denominated George V

For nearly a quarter of a century (1914–37) the George V design served for the basic letter postage stamp. During this period, a total of 11.8 billion George V stamps were produced

stamp dies, intended for later use when new denominations might be required. The dies and plates were shipped to Melbourne in May 1914. The consignment included a supply of watermarked paper specially manufactured for the George V stamp.

The first release of the 1d letterpress George V stamp occurred at the general post offices of Sydney and Melbourne on 17 July 1914. Production of the 1d Kangaroo and Map stamp now ceased. Agar Wynne had issued a King’s head stamp for 1d basic letter postage.

Christmas Island is a place of much natural beauty and scientific interest. This peak of a submarine mountain rises to a central plateau at about 360 metres above sea level. It is fringed by an almost continuous rocky cliff that rises to an average of 10–20 metres, broken in about a dozen places by shallow bays and small beaches. The Christmas Island National Park comprises 64 per cent of the island’s total area of 135 square kilometres.

Since the first exploration of the island, in 1887, there has been continuous interest in its unique natural history. Its isolation and varied habitats have allowed a great number of flora and fauna species to develop, many of which are endemic. The national park has 12 recognised habitats, four of which are represented in this stamp issue: forest, beach, sea cliffs and wetlands.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands, WA 6799

1813002 First day cover (gummed)$5.20

The stamp designs show the changes in cartography over four centuries

The first European sighting of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands is thought to have been in 1609, by Englishman Captain William Keeling of the East India Company. Soon after, the two atolls that comprise the islands started to appear on maps. These stamps show details of various Italian, French, Dutch and English maps over 400 years from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Each stamp is composed of various maps from a particular century: 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th.

Maps used in the designs

A number of different maps and navigational charts have been used in the design of the four stamps, including:

• L’Arcano del Mare (Secrets of the Sea) (1646).

• Hémisphère oriental ou Ancien Monde (c. 1783)

• Karte von dem Morgenländischen Ocean oder dem Indischen Meere (1758)
