The first stamp issue presented on page four will be released at the end of September to coincide with an announced change to international rates to take effect from 2 October 2017. Details were not available for the September edition, and so the complete range of products is included for you here.

Another instalment of the Century of Service stamp series recognises the significant contribution by women during times of war and human conflict. The contribution has evolved over the last 100 years, from the initial role of women as nurses or carers for those affected by the circumstances of battle or recovering on their return home. Today women play a more active role alongside their male counterparts.

We present the third instalment of what is fast becoming a favourite stamp series: the Fair Dinkum Aussie Alphabet. This issue presents the letters B, G, J, K and U. A large part of the appeal are the entertaining stories composed about the illustrations from each stamp. I hope they encourage discussions about other possibilities!

The civil aviation history of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is the subject of a new stamp issue. The stamps feature four aircraft models that were involved in key events and developments dating from the onset of World War II to the 1970s.

Along with an offer of a collectable for the next release from the New Generation banknote series, this Bulletin brings you commemorative products marking significant events from the war in Vietnam and World War II.

Australian water plants are not part of a single botanical group; they span hundreds of genera of aquatic and wetland plants. Water plants also encompass semi-aquatic species and the many herbs, shrubs and other plants that grow in moist conditions. This stamp issue features three flowering species native to Australia.

The impressive blue-white flowers of the Giant Waterlily (Nymphaea gigantea) grow up to 25 to 30 centimetres in diameter. The plants favour permanent water with deep mud.

Marshwort (Nymphoides geminata) grows in still and slow-flowing pools, usually less than one metre deep. Its common name is derived from the fact that its leaves are unscalloped, or “entire”.

Lotus Lily (Nelumbo nucifera) boasts pink fragrant flowers, of approximately 20 centimetres in diameter, which bloom for around three days. Many parts of the plant are used in cooking. Lotus Lily is also known as Pink Lotus-lily and, in Asia, as Sacred Lotus.

Next Generation of Australian Banknotes Released late September to early October 2017

The second release banknote of the Reserve Bank of Australia Next Generation Banknote Program will soon be available, and there are two products for collectors. The new generation $10 banknote retains some of the design and colour aspects of the existing note and includes the same people in the design. It also incorporates the innovative security features found in the 2016 $5 banknote, and the tactile feature to assist those in the community who are vision-impaired.

The Next Generation of $10 single banknote presents one uncirculated $10 banknote from the new polymer series. The Two Generations of $10 banknote folder presents one uncirculated $10 banknote from the new polymer series and one uncirculated $10 banknote from the first polymer series.

Since 1947, Australian women have been active in peacekeeping forces in many countries, including East Timor, Indonesia, Korea, Zimbabwe, Namibia and the Solomon Islands.

This issue, the fourth in the series commemorating a century since World War I, acknowledges the role of women in war and conflict. Prior to and including World War I, the involvement of women in conflict zones was almost entirely limited to nursing. During World War I, more than 3,000 nurses joined the war effort. Many women on the home front also made an immense contribution. In World War II, other roles opened to women, including the Women’s Land Army and the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force. Women civilians participated in

a number of roles during the Vietnam War, including as members of civilian medical teams, Red Cross support, entertainers, Embassy staff and journalists. Women have been active in service in the Middle East and have been involved in peacekeeping forces in many countries. Today women can participate in all employment categories in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). In 2015, 15.4 per cent or the ADF permanent workforce were women, as were 14.9 per cent of the total deployed force serving on overseas operations.

This stamp issue features different art techniques used by artists today.

This issue features works by two eminent artists from northern Australia. Banduk Marika (b. 1954) belongs to the Rirratjingu clan of north-east Arnhem Land and Bede Tungutalum (b. 1952) is from the Tiwi Islands. Both artists were born into celebrated artistic families and both work in a range of media, including printmaking.

Marika’s work focuses on her inherited Dreamtime stories. Her Waterlili and Gaya 1983 is a linocut, printed in relief in yellow ink from a single block. Guyamala 2000, a combination of linocut and screenprint, relates the creation story of the naming of the fishes.

Tungutalum’s painting Untitled ca. 1984 and linocut Pukumani poles 1988, both represent the tutini or pukumani poles that play an important role in the complex Tiwi burial rite. The decorated poles, carved from Ironbark, are placed around the grave in the final stage of the lengthy burial ceremony, and

then left to weather and decay. Tungutalum’s carved pukumani poles can be seen at Government House, Darwin and another is displayed in the Sculpture Garden at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Both Marika and Tungatalum have received many awards and honours and their work is held in numerous public and private collections.

This stamp issue looks at Cocos (Keeling) Islands civil aviation history. Each of the four stamps represents a “chapter” of this history, from 1939 to the 1970s.

The Consolidated Model 28-3 design represents the first-ever flight to Cocos (Keeling) Islands, a survey for a new route in the event an alternative route to deliver airmail to England was necessary if war broke out in Asia and interrupted the Empire route. It was undertaken by the NC777 Guba, a civil version of the Catalina flying boat.

The Avro 691 Lancastrian VH-EAS shown in the stamp design represents another survey flight, this time in 1948. Qantas Empire Airways made the flight to ascertain the practicality of the “Wallaby Route”, which it wished to operate between Sydney and Johannesburg. The success of the survey flight led to scheduled services commencing in 1952.

The third aircraft type operated by Australia on the Wallaby Route, after the Constellation and Super Constellation, was the Lockheed L-188 Electra. Qantas Electras began flying the route in 1963 and gave way to Boeing 707s in 1967, at which time Cocos was no longer a stop on the route. The aircraft in the design is VH-ECB Pacific Explorer.

In the early 1970s, operating under the “two-airline policy”, Ansett Airlines of Australia and Trans Australia Airlines (TAA) flew charter flights between Cocos and Perth using Boeing 727s. Schedules meant that in reality aircraft from the two airlines were seldom, if ever, at Cocos at the same time. The aircraft in the foreground on this stamp is VH-TJA James Cook, a TAA Boeing 727-76.
