Welcome to our first Bulletin edition of 2015. We introduce this year’s program with Lunar New Year: Year of the Goat. The product range for this issue includes a silk miniature sheet with turquoise foiling.

Michael ZsoltManager, Philatelic Australia Post

Lunar New Year festivities are important celebrations for millions around the world. The Goat is the eighth sign in the 12-year cycle of animals in the Chinese Zodiac.

This time of year we also recognise through the Australia Post Australian Legends Award, Australians who have made a significant contribution to the community. Although the Legends will not be announced until 22 January 2015, a full list of the products to be released is included in this edition.

Native Animals is a new issue of six stamps featuring Australia’s unique fauna. For most, the only opportunity to see many of Australia's native animals is by visiting a wildlife sanctuary or bush park; however, some of us are lucky enough to observe these shy little Aussies in our own backyards.

A new release of stamps in time for St Valentine’s Day draws attention to this time when love is in the air. These clever designs are also suitable for many other occasions throughout the year.

A stamp issue in late February recalls an era when the method of world travel and economic growth relied on the clipper ship. The speed and versatility of these magnificent sailing ships allowed commercial trade with the new colony of Australia to thrive.

I would also like to reflect on the gummed stamps issued in 2014, and the favourite stamp design voted by those participating in our annual stamp poll. Interest in the most recent royal visit to Australia obviously hit a cord with collectors. The stamp receiving the most individual votes was the Royal Visit international stamp design.

Lunar New Year is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals, celebrated throughout the world. Lunar New Year 2015 celebrates the beginning of the Year of the Goat.

The Goat is the eighth sign of the Chinese Zodiac and symbolises independence. Those born under the Goat sign are considered shy, creative and affectionate. The Lunar New Year stamp

issue for 2015 is the eighth in our special 12-year series, featuring each of the animal signs of the Chinese Zodiac. The stamps depict the Chinese calligraphic symbol for the Goat and a pictorial derivation.

The prestige booklet features a beautiful set of stamps that present each animal sign with its lucky gemstone. Each gemstone is said to match the personality of each animal sign and to bring good luck.

The stocky Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus) and the Eastern Grey Kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) are both found in the south-eastern parts of Australia. The Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) lives in eucalyptus forests along the eastern seaboard, and the endangered Numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) is a small, striped marsupial confined in the wild to the

south-west of Western Australia. The carnivorous Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) has been threatened by Devil Facial Tumour Disease for the last two decades. The Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) feeds largely on ants and termites and is found throughout Australia. Like the Platypus (the only other monotreme), the Echidna lays eggs rather than gives birth to live young.

ARTIST'S IM

PRESSION

This issue commemorates the first Victoria Cross awarded to an Australian. The Victoria Cross was instituted by Queen Victoria in 1856 to honour conspicuous bravery during the Crimean War, but was not awarded to an Australian until the Second Boer War of 1899–1902. During this conflict, in which Australians fought alongside South African and British forces, five Australians were honoured with a Victoria Cross, the first being Captain Neville Howse.

The stamp design of this stamp issue is based on an original one penny (1d) stamp issued by the colony of Victoria in May 1900 to raise funds for the Patriotic Fund for the Boer War. The design, which arose from a public competition, was modelled on the Victoria Cross medal. The medal is in the form of a bronze pattée bearing the crown of St Edward surmounted by a lion, the emblem of the British royal family, and the inscription “FOR VALOUR”.

This latest issue of stamps, for special occasions and everyday use, is a fresh and contemporary take on the subject of love and the love-heart form.

Each stamp presents a heart-shaped object, floating in a panorama of blue sky and fluffy white clouds. There is a heart-shaped kite, sky-writing smoke trail, hot-air balloon and cloud.

From the earliest days of European exploration, sailing ships were crucial in the development of Australia. Sailing ships carried everything that settlers needed for survival. The journey was often long and dangerous, ranging between six and 13 weeks, depending on weather conditions. Other hazards were fire and the difficulties of maintaining hygiene.

Clipper ships were known as the greyhounds of the sea from their beginnings in the 1840s and represented the pinnacle of sailing ship technology. By the 1850s, the use of clipper ships on the England to Australia route was prominent, with most setting sail for Melbourne. These sleek sailing ships represented major advancements in design, enabling them to reach destinations more quickly.

All the sailing ships featured in this issue have played a

role in Australia’s maritime history. The Frances Henty was constructed in 1852 and named after the wife of Portland Bay patriarch Thomas Henty. The vessel carried passengers, gold and wool between London and Victoria. The clipper barque Phoenician of the White Star line was the first clipper ship to come to Australia, arriving in Port Jackson on 21 July 1849, taking 91 days from England.

The painting of the Australian clipper ship Arabian, by CP Williams, was lithographed by John Raphael Isaac, medallist to HRH Prince Albert. The clipper barque Monkchester, was painted in 1865 by John Scott, a noted English oil painter from Newcastle.

The Red Jacket (cover) set a speed record on her maiden voyage across the Atlantic in January 1854. The ship’s subsequent voyage was to Melbourne in the then unprecedented time of 67 days non-stop.
