How would you write a definition of a standard component?

You have 2 minutes to try and write your own definition of a standard component.

A standard component is a ready prepared ingredient that will be used in production of a food product. It is used to ensure a consistent final outcome and to remove steps in the final production of a product so that they are all the same.

Page 7: Standard components

What are the advantages? No skills required No preparation for some sections of a

dish required Assembly of sections only required. Less time required to produce a product. Can be cheaper to buy in bulk and store

than buy as needed.

Page 8: Standard components

Are there any disadvantages? Can be expensive to buy You don’t have as much control of the

nutritional profile of the product. You are not in control of the ingredients

that might be added – such as additives, preservatives etc.

May need to buy in bulk to get best price so is dependant on orders in.
