STANDISH-STERLING CELEBRATES OUR SCHOOL BOARD LEADERS THIS JANUARY“School Boards LeadStrong”

January is School Board Recognition Month and Standish-Sterling Community Schools is joining 545 local and 56

intermediate school districts across the state to thank these community volunteers for their untiring dedication to public education.

“Serving on a school board has been described as the ‘toughest volunteer job in America.’ Yet Michigan’s public school board members dedicate countless personal hours to attending meetings, school functions, and hours of preparation for the decisions they make,” said Darren Kroczaleski, Superintendent. “On top of that, many pursue their own professional development to stay on top of the ever-changing education landscape. Collectively, school board members in Michigan have spent about 7,000 hours attending training and professional development. They’re dedicated individuals who are committed to the continuing success of our schools and students.”

It’s an exciting and challenging time in public education. School board members in Standish-Sterling develop policies and make tough decisions that help shape the future of our education system. They bear responsibility and oversight for an annual budget of over $15 million, 1600 students, 180 employees and 4 instructional buildings.

“We proudly join educators and community members in saluting these education advocates as they provide vision and leadership for student achievement, academic programs, district funding and school facilities,” Kroczaleski said. “They preserve the core of our democracy—public education.”

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTSNEED TO PAY CLASS DUES!

In an effort to eliminate the need for class fundraisers, all high school students pay class dues of $10 per year. Class dues are used to defray the cost of decorations and supplies that each class uses throughout the year.

In their Junior year, the class is responsible for putting on the Prom. This means that the Junior Class pays for all decorations, party favors, food, and the DJ for Prom. It is helpful if class dues are paid before the class plans the Prom.

The big expense for each Senior Class is the yearbook fee… each year the Senior Class pays for the extra pages in the yearbook that are devoted to senior pictures and senior activities. Other expenses for Senior year include Senior Luncheon, Awards Reception, and graduation decorations. Senior year is quite an expensive year for parents, so it is recommended that dues be paid in full ($40) prior to the start of Senior year.

Parents may send in class dues with their student at any time. Remind your child to ask the Class Advisor for a receipt and keep it with your records until graduation! Many parents make one payment of $40, but paying $10 per year is also welcomed. You may mail a check for dues to the high school, drop it off at the high school office, or send it in with your student. Be sure to note your child’s name and graduation year on the check or envelope. Make checks payable to “Standish-Sterling H.S.”

Meal Charge PolicyThe Standish-Sterling Community School District has a meal charge policy that applies at all schools for students and staff. The District realizes that there are times when staff and students may forget their lunch money. To ensure that staff and students do not go hungry, but also to promote responsible staff, student, and parent behavior and minimize the fiscal burden to the District, the Board of Education will allow staff and students who may forget meal money to “charge” the cost of meals to be paid back at a later date subject to the terms of this policy.

Food Services is an enterprise fund which means it does not receive general fund support from the district, and thus must generate funds through meal sales, snack sales, and federal and state reimbursement in order to pay operating expenses and fees to the district. Therefore, unpaid charges affect the ability of Food Service to support itself and its employees.

Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and National School Lunch Program (NSLP) have provided schools with administrative guidelines and policy for meal charges. Following the administrative guidelines from MDE and NSLP, Standish-Sterling Community Schools will adhere to the following meal charge policy:

1. A staff or student may charge up to three (3) meals maximum (one charge per meal). 2. Schools may offer alternate meals to students who have used their three charges. There are two (2) approaches to offering alternate meals: A. Schools may offer an alternate meal that is not eligible for reimbursement, for example, a cheese sandwich and milk. In a case where a student has 3 charged meals, the student will need to be able to purchase meals and if not, at lunch a child will be provided with a cheese sandwich (2 slices of bread and 1 slice of cheese) and milk. In the situation of a student who is lactose intolerant, then a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as an alternative will be provided, if medically appropriate. B. Schools may offer an alternate meal that is eligible for reimbursement, where the meal meets the meal pattern requirements, for example, a cheese sandwich, apple, carrot sticks, and milk.3. If a student has a charge balance, the school must provide a meal when the student is using money to pay for the current day’s meal or future meals.4. It is permissible for schools to serve only one (1) particular set of food items to children whose parents owe the school money, as long as the food items comprise a reimbursable meal. 5. A staff or student who has charged a meal may not charge or purchase “ala carte” item(s), including extra main entrees or make purchases in the snack room.6. If a student repeatedly comes to school with no lunch and no money, food service employees must report this to the building administrator. It could be a sign of abuse or neglect and the proper authorities should be contacted.7. Schools may deny a meal to a student who pays reduced or full price and who does not provide the required payment for that meal.8. The food service director will coordinate communications with the parent/guardian to resolve the matter of unpaid charges.9. If cafeteria services staff suspects that a student may be abusing this policy, written notice will be provided to the parent/guardian that if he/she continues to abuse this policy, the privilege of charging meals will be refused.10. All accounts must be settled at the end of a school year. Letters will be sent home approximately four to five days before the last day of school to students who have any negative balances. Negative balances will result in report cards being held until the balance is paid in full. Negative balances not paid in full thirty (30) days prior to the start of the following school year will force the District to take action to collect unpaid funds by means of collection agencies, small claims court, or any other legal method deemed necessary by the District. 11. The District cannot go on indefinitely feeding students for free. Unlimited “charged” meals would not be fair to the vast majority of students/parents who are paying for their lunches. Unpaid lunches would ultimately affect lunch prices.

The Preschoolers at Standish Elementary enjoyed many activities this month to get in the holiday spirit! They had the opportunity to decorate their own Christmas trees, made pumpkin pie, wrote letters to Santa Claus and even had a surprise classroom visit from the big man himself! In addition, the preschoolers sang songs for their families and made lots of adorable crafts at their Annual Family Craft Day.

Standish & Sterling GSRP Preschoolers are busy, busy, busy...

During the month of October the Sterling GSRP Preschool students learned about fire safety during a visit from the Sterling Fire Department. They also learned how EMTs help people who are hurt or sick during an ambulance visit to the preschool.

Preschool children learn how to STOP, DROP and ROLL.

“Papa Don” from the Sterling Fire Department teaches preschoolers how to crawl out of a house quickly and safely during a demonstration with the fire department’s smoke house.

In October both the Standish and Sterling GSRP Preschool classes went on a field trip to LeCronier’s Baby Animal Farm. The children were able to hold baby chicks, bunnies, goats, and kittens. They also were able to feed and pet baby calves, goats, and lambs. After feeding the animals the children went on a hayride out to the pumpkin patch and each child was able to pick their own pumpkin to take home. It was a fantastic day!

On November 20, the GSRP Preschool classes each held a Family Feast Night. The children performed a few songs for their families and then they all sat down together and enjoyed a potluck feast. The children wore turkey hats that they made and the rooms were decorated with art made by the children. It was a wonderful night that celebrated our preschool children and their families.

The month of October was full of lots of fun and learning for the GSRP Preschool at Standish Elementary! In addition to the field trip, we went on a Nature Walk around the school, collecting interesting things for our Classroom Collage (pictures below).

For Fire Prevention Week, we had a visit from the Standish Fire Department, where we learned about proper safety and then we practiced what we learned in the Smoke House (pictures to the left).

Sportsmanship checklist for students and adultsSportsmanship is the ability to win without gloating, lose without complaining and treating your opponents with respect.

If you make a mistake, don’t pout or make excuses. Learn from it and be ready to continue to play. If a teammate makes a mistake, offer encouragement, not criticism. If you win, don’t rub it in. If you lose, don’t make excuses.

Follow these guidelines for good sportsmanship:

q Abide by the rules of the game. q Follow the directions of coach.

q Try to avoid arguments. q Respect the other team’s effort.

q Share in the responsibilities of the team. q Encourage teammates.

q Give everyone a chance to play by the rules. q Always play fair.

q Accept the judgement of the game’s officials. q End the game smoothly.

Central Theatre Presents

THE GUYS & GRACELAND

It’s time for another show! Auditions are DONE! Rehearsals are UNDERWAY!

Before you know it, Central Theatre Association will be gracing the stage with its winter production of two one act plays: The Guys, a touching story about the tragedy of September 11th when the Twin Towers fell in New York City and Graceland, a sentimental tale of two women who share much, including a love for Elvis Presley.

The Guys features junior Jonathan Dent as the distraught fire chief who must speak at the funerals of his fallen firefighters as well as sophomore Madison Schwab who dons the role of a New York writer who agrees to assist the chief in finding “just the right words” to honor these dedicated heroes. Graceland features senior Keara Dixon as a mature fan of Elvis who may be able to offer a little friendly advice to a younger fan, portrayed by sophomore Katie Van Haaren, whose life so far has not been “a bed of roses.”

The production will come to life on the SSC stage Thursday through Saturday, January 22, 23, and 24, 2015 at 7:00 PM. Tickets may be purchased at the door: $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students.

Whether you recall the events of 9/11 or consider yourself a true Elvis fan, you won’t be disappointed in Central Theatre Association’s poignant presentation. So mark your calendars to share a few laughs as well as some tearful moments as these talented students present an evening of fine entertainment.

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs), dirt bikes and other similar vehicles are prohibited from operating on school property. Parents are encouraged to discuss this with their children and remind them to respect the property of others.
