CLERGY
Every Tuesday the staff
here at Starmount gathers
for our weekly staff
meeting. We always
begin this meeting by
engaging in a calendar
“check-in,” in which we
go through the calendar
day by day for the next few weeks to see
what is scheduled to occur. At our last
staff meeting, when we went through our
calendar “check-in,” I noticed a significant
difference in the number of the activities
listed. Those open spaces that were
present on the calendar during the
summer months were no longer there. They
were filled with activities, meetings, and
numerous programs that have finished their
summer hiatus and are ready to ramp
back up.
I’m sure that your personal calendars are
probably following suit with the church
calendar. They are starting to fill up again
as summer is drawing to a close and a new
school year is beginning. Organizing a
busy calendar can be challenging.
Fitting everything into your schedule can
sometimes feel like you are playing in a
real-life version of Tetris.
Do you remember that video game from
decades ago? Tetris was a game in which
you placed oddly shaped blocks together
and attempted to make a complete row.
If all the blocks fit together perfectly, then
that row would disappear. If you didn’t,
then those blocks would begin to pile up.
Shape after shape would come down and
stack one upon another. Faster and faster
they would come, until eventually the
stack would grow too tall and the game
would be over.
Our lives can feel like this sometimes. Like
they are filling up with activities faster than
we are able to handle them or organize
them appropriately. Therefore, it is
important for us to identify those activities
that can sustain us in the midst of our busy
lives, those practices that are life-giving for
us, and make sure we prioritize them in our
schedules.
These “life-giving” activities will be different
for each of us. Perhaps they will include
time spent with close friends, hobbies that
relieve our stress, or quiet moments spent
at rest. It is my hope that they will also
include your regular participation in the life
of this community of faith. There are so
many wonderful things going on here at
Starmount, that you have many options in
how you might get involved. Many of
those opportunities are mentioned in this
newsletter. You can also always find more
on our website (starmountpres.org) if you
click on the “Volunteer” or the “Events”
links on the very top of the page.
As you begin to fill your calendars for this
upcoming year, may you remember to
place activities on them that will not only
fill a space in your schedule, but will be
able to fill your heart, mind, and soul. I
pray that you may find those opportunities
here in the missions and ministries at
Starmount.
In Christ,
Charlie Lee

Starmount Constellations:
What are they and why should
I join one?
The Faith Formation Committee,
working with Starmount’s
Session, has been very
thoughtful through the spring
and summer to think outside the box about
Adult Education. Taking the results of the mission
study to heart, the Committee discerned that
Adult Education, for at least the fall of this
program year, will look and feel a bit different.
Learning from the experiences of other churches
and what congregants talk about with their
friends who attend different churches, the
answer is: small group ministry!
Starmount individuals will form to make
groups, or Constellations, that will meet on a
weekly basis for a set amount of weeks,
depending on the group’s topic. Constellations
will be formed based upon a number of factors:
common interests, agreed-upon group meeting
time and day, or other shared experiences.
Groups may choose to meet before another
Starmount event (like before worship on a
Sunday morning or incorporated into a dinner
group) or as a new stand-alone venture.
“But, Kathryn, why should I join one?”
Joining a Starmount Constellation will be a great
way to learn more about yourself through bible
study and reflection while also learning more
about others in your Starmount church family.
What a better way to do both at the same
time? Or, better yet – find 6-8 friends that you
think would like to go deeper in their relationships
with one another and form a group on your own
– but you won’t be alone! I will be able to
provide you with a number of options for the first
session to get your group off on the right foot.
Groups are forming NOW to start the week of
September 30th. If you’re ready to sign up as a
leader or participant, please talk to me or
Ginger Walton. If you’d like more information,
please plan to come to the Fellowship Hall on
Kickoff Sunday, September 9th, from 9-9:45 to
learn more about them and other great
opportunities in faith formation for all ages!
Blessings,
Pastor Kathryn

Thank you to The Starmount
Congregation Today and every day we give thanks for
our Starmount Family. You have carried us
through these last few weeks with your
prayers, cards, hugs and a wonderful day
of giving thanks for and celebrating
George’s life. What an incredible job you
did in organizing and carrying out all the
details for the memorial service and the
beautiful reception afterward! We know
everyone in the congregation had some
part in all that took place.
With grateful hearts and our love to each
of you. All The Carpenter Family
Matthew Copple will be ordained to
the ministry of Word & Sacrament, and
installed as pastor of First Presbyterian
Church of Henderson, 222 Young
Street, Henderson, NC on
September 23, 2018 at 2:30pm.
There will be a reception following the service.
All who wish to attend are welcome.
Brenda Triplett
Administrative Office Manager
Celebrates 20 Year Service Anniversary
Did you ever wonder how
Starmount runs so efficiently
and smoothly? One very
special reason is Brenda
Triplett. Brenda will celebrate
20 years at Starmount on
September 14th and we are
so very grateful for her many
contributions. We as members,
benefit from her many
talents each time we call the church, read our
newsletter, refer to our bulletins each Sunday
during worship and when we review our annual
report. She also maintains the church’s
membership records, generates the
membership directories, and assists the Admin,
Evangelism & Membership and Caring Ministries
Committees in executing their responsibilities.
Brenda’s work keeps us on top of what’s
happening at Starmount. During her time with
Starmount, she has worked with three pastors,
two associate pastors, three interim pastors,
three parish visitors and one parish associate,
two directors of christian education and three
directors of music. Brenda has seen many
changes over the years and was instrumental in
computerizing membership and church records.
Brenda graduated from Appalachian State
University with a BS degree in Early Childhood
Education. Prior to joining the staff at Starmount,
Brenda held various positions as: first grade
teacher, District Sales Coordinator for E.F. Hutton
Credit Corp. and District Customer Support
Administrator for Scott Paper Company (now
Kimberly Clark). She joined Starmount in 1998 in
a part-time position to produce the newsletter
but gradually assumed more responsibilities. In
2004 she accepted a full time position.
Brenda is a member of City Church and their
choir and participates in a women’s Bible study.
She enjoys spending time with her two sisters,
nieces, great nieces and great nephews, as well
as biking and walking in the Lake Jeanette
area. Brenda enjoys the diversity her work
provides, and values the friendly, caring people
and friendships formed over the years.

Youth & Young Adults
Youth
In August, the youth participated in Mission
Possible. They spent the mornings helping as
leaders for the 100+ super heroes that
attended VBS and then participated in service
projects in the afternoon. The youth went to
Greensboro Urban Ministry to pack food and
did work around the church. They helped Ms.
Cindy get the preschool ready by organizing
her library and helping to clean out toys. They
also worked on the playground, in the garden,
and cleaned the inside of the church bus. We
give thanks for the ways our youth learn to
serve here at Starmount!
In September SPY will officially kick-off for the
school year! Mark your calendars for White Lake
September 15th-16th and a parent meeting on
the 16th as we arrive back to the church! All the
SPY fall calendars can be found on the
Starmount website under the Youth tab.

Yoga Is Not for the
Flexible...It Is for the Willing Many people who think about
exploring a yoga class never manage
to make that first step through the
door. There are many reasons for their
hesitation, but a common block is the
feeling that they are not flexible enough for
yoga. They have mental images of slim, fit yogis
proudly twisted into pretzel shapes. One visit to a
normal yoga class will sweep that vision from
their minds.
Yogis come in all shapes, sizes, ages and
abilities. The common thread is that they are all
willing to learn and permit themselves the grace
to try. Success is not measured in being able to
touch the floor without bending your knees.
Success may be measured in being able to take
a deep breath and controlling the exhale. It may
be in recognizing that you can sit with good
posture for a few minutes without your back
hurting. It may be in raising your arms above your
head for a minute without becoming light-
headed. Success at yoga comes at all levels and
it is different for each of us.
As a teacher, I get the most satisfaction
from watching my students progress from
groaning with each move to being able to
move comfortably in class. It’s even more
rewarding when they ask me privately if they are
ready to do more. That’s why we added a class
called Out of the Chair for those students who
know they can do more than a Chair Class but
aren’t quite ready for the Beginner/Intermediate
level.
So…if you are willing…come and play with
your friends who have chosen to be yogis and
embrace the healthy feeling of moving freely.

Church Historian

Some interesting motions were
made and passed in the Session
minutes of August 5, 1953:
“Jesse White and Rev. Allen McSween to make a
survey and to recommend to the Session an
Organization Committee for the purpose of
creating a better understanding and closer
cooperation between the Elders and Deacons, of
their work and duties.”
The Session decided that “for the
development of our Church, they would
put special emphasis on: Christian Education,
Visitation and Giving.” The bulletin for September
20, 1953 had this: Moravian Church sent letter of
appreciation for the four silver offering plates
given by Starmount as a token
of thanks for the use of their sanctuary while
Starmount’s sanctuary was being built.
Come to the library to read full article from
Greensboro Daily News (Sept. 15, 1953) entitled
“Starmount Church Men Take Kitchen Turn” by
Alice Lide. Very cute but too long to put in this
column. I’ll give you just one line: “What a rat
race,” said Mrs. Lin Adams. “Did you ever try to
get a dozen men started on something,” Mrs.
Adams was addressed as “Top kick” by members
of her domestic detail with memories of KP duty.
Montreat Family Retreat: November 9-11 It’s never too early to put important plans in the
calendar! Plan to join the Fellowship and Faith
Formation Committees at the annual trek to
Montreat for Starmount’s Family Retreat. It’s also
been arranged that because the 12th is Veteran’s
Day, there is an option to stay an additional
evening to enjoy the fall foliage and mountains.
Please let Pastor Kathryn know if you have any
questions.
DO YOU HAVE any church bulletins or newsletters between the years of 1953-1998.
I have many bulletins from 1953-1955 but not all. I
am not sure when the newsletter started. If there is a
stash of newsletters and bulletins somewhere in the
church, I have not found them so I need to get as
many as I can from individuals before they get
discarded. I know I used to have bulletins that were
special to me but decided to pitch them before I
knew I would be historian under the incorrect
assumption we had an archive of bulletins and
newsletters. So next time you clean out your files and
want to give up any bulletins or newsletters in this
time frame, please let me know or put them in a box
in the library labeled “older bulletins and newsletters.”
If by chance you want them back put a note saying
“please return to name, phone no. and/or e-mail.”

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. “What
wisdom would we impart to the
world if we knew it was our last
chance? If we had to vanish
tomorrow, what would we want
as our legacy? When Randy
Pausch, a computer science
professor at Carnegie Mellon,
was asked to give such a
lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his
last, since he had recently been diagnosed
with terminal cancer. But the lecture he
gave--’Really Achieving Your Childhood
Dreams’--wasn't about dying. It was about
the importance of overcoming obstacles, of
enabling the dreams of others, of seizing
every moment (because ‘time is all you
have...and you may find one day that you
have less than you think’). It was a
summation of everything Randy had come
to believe. It was about living. Pausch has
combined the humor, inspiration and
intelligence that made his lecture such a
phenomenon and given it an indelible form.”

The Self Does Not Die, Verified Paranormal
Phenomena from Near-Death Experiences
by Titus Rivas and others. “Our
faith holds the promise of a life
everlasting yet our culture
constantly reinforces a false
belief that death is to be
feared. In recent decades
thousands of first person, near
death experiences provide
evidence of the reality of life after
death. The Self Does Not Die summarizes
over 100 cases that are particularly
interesting in that they show experiences that
are perceived as things that cannot be
explained as dreams or hallucinations. These
cases support the theory that consciousness
is not inextricably linked to brain function
and will continue after our physical bodies
have ceased functioning.” Review from
Starmount’s own Jim Fisher who donated this
title. Call no. 133.9 Riv 2016
Noah’s Wife, A Novel by Lindsay Starck.
“When young minister Noah and
his dutiful wife arrive at their new
post in the hills, they've reached
a gray and wet little town where
it's been raining for as long as
anyone can remember. Noah's
wife is determined to help her
husband revive this soggy
congregation but soon finds her efforts
thwarted by her eccentric new neighbors.
Overwhelmed, Noah's wife fails to realize
that Noah, too, is battling his own internal
crisis. Soon the river waters rise, flooding the
streets of the town and driving scores of wild
animals out of the once-renowned zoo. As
the water swallows up the houses, the
telephone poles, and the single highway out
of town, Noah, his wife, and the
townspeople must confront not only the
savage forces of nature but also the fragile
ties that bind them to one another, all before
their world is washed away. Noah's Wife is a
wise and poignant novel that draws on the
motifs of the biblical flood story to explore
the true meaning of community, to examine
the remarkable strength of the human spirit,
and to ask whether hope can exist even
where faith has been lost.” From publisher
