Crews just rescued a horse from
a pond at Butterbridge Stables. from Canal Fulton/Lawrence Township Fire
A team consisting of police officers, firefight-
ers and volunteers helped an approximately
1,500 pound horse escape the chilly waters
of a frozen pond Friday afternoon at Butter-
bridge Stables.
Firefighter Erik Smith, of the Lawrence Town-
ship/Canal Fulton Fire Department, said a black-colored, male horse wandered onto
the frozen pond about 4 p.m. January 8, 2015 in the 5600 block of Butterbridge Road
NW and fell through the center portion of the 5- to 6-foot deep water.
Firefighters were able to chip a path through the ice using sledge hammers to reach
the animal, Smith said. About a dozen people were then able to help pull the horse
from the pond using a rope.
“Once we got to him with a rope, he was able to gain his footing and pretty much walk
up to shore,” said Smith, adding that the horse was likely in the pond for at least an
hour.
The horse was taken into a heated garage and was being cared for as police and fire-
fighters left the scene, Smith said.

For the first time in probably ever, we find an Akron Fire Department pump, on McKinley Ave SW
in Canton. Their trench/collapse personnel assisted with the house explosion today. Russ Volkert
I bet you are right, or at least in a very, very long time. We had a pump down from Canton twice,
the last time was in 1926. Christopher Tritt Tell me about. I was at Harrison Ave. and West Tusc.
when Hudson and Akron got off 77. What a site. Solid effort Canton Fire.
Canton Fire responded to a structure fire on McKin-
ley Ave SW late this morning. On arrival units found
a 2 story house that had exploded and was on fire.
The fire was extinguished and the the Canton Fire
Technical Rescue Operations Team was requested,
as well as the Ohio Region 5 USAR Team and Mara-
thon Fire Department Technical Rescue Team. The
units used listening devices and search cameras to determine if there were any victims in the un-
stable structure. It was determined that there may have
been potential victims, and the building was shored and
rescuers entered the structure to do a search. No victims
were found. Thank you to all members from the Mara-
thon Fire Department and the Rescue Technicians from
the Region 5 USAR team for all you assistance on the cold
day. Thank you to Stark FDRU for assisting us today, it
was greatly appreciated.
