Virgin Mary

This ancient feast is held in high esteem by Eastern Christianity. It celebrated Our Lady’s dedication to God, which prepared her for her acceptance of God;s will that she became the Mother of His Son.

Wednesday Saint Cecilia

St Cecilia was a Roman woman of noble family who was mar-tyred in the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Her family home is now a basilica dedicated to where her remains lie. She is the patron saint of musicians and is remembered in the Roman Canon

Thursday Saint Clement I, Pope or of

Saint Columban

(+97) St Clement ws the third pope after St Peter and author of the famous letter to the Corinthians, an early example of the Bishop of Rome’s universal jurisdiction. Tradition records him being sentenced to hard labour in the Crimea and thrown into the sea, tied to an anchor. (c540-615) St Columban was born in Leinster, Ireland, and entered the monastic life at an early age. With a dozen compan-ions he travelled to the continent and founded many monaster-ies in France and Italy, including Luxeuil and Bobbio, although his strict discipline sometimes aroused opposition. He died in Bobbio in 615.

Friday Saint Andrew Dung-Lac &

Companions St Andrew Dung-Lac was a Vietnamese priest martyred in 1839. He was one of a group of one hundred and seventeen martyrs put to death in the nineteenth century. They were canonised in 1988. Altogether between 130,000 and 300,000 Catholics were martyred in Vietnam from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries.

Saturday Saint Catherine of Alexandria

or of Our Lady on Saturday

St Catherine lived during the 4th Century. She was a learned girl of noble birth who protested against the persecution of Chris-tians which was ordered by the Roman Emperor, Maxentius. She converted the Emperor’s wife, and defeated in debate the best scholars sent to oppose her. Very little is known about her life; she was popular in the Middle Ages. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
