This tutorial will explain how to create a first domain controller (DC) in your network or company and includes
DNS server setup in windows server 2003.
You *have* to install DNS server for a DC to function properly. Without a DNS server the client computers wouldn
know which computer is the DC. You can even host DNS on a different server than DC, but typically the DNS Serv
s hosted on the DC.
Before Starting the DC Installation
Before Starting the DC installation process you need to make sure the following points are addressed.
Minimum Requirements
• You have installed Basic Windows Server 2003 installation
• Make sure you have assigned a static IP address to your server
• 1 GB Ram or more on the DC running DNS Server
Recommended Requirements
• 3 GB Ram or more on the DC running DNS Server
• 20 GB Partition using NTFS
Selecting a Domain Name for your DC
Now we have to think of a name for our domain. If you have a domain like windowsreference.com”, you can use it, t isn’t suggested because computers inside of your domain may not be able to reach the company website.
Active directory domains don’t need to be “real” domains like the one above – they can be anything you wish.
So it is suggested to create a non-internet domain name IE: “windowsreference.int”.
Starting the Domain Controller and initiating the DNS Setup Process
• Start the DC server and start the DNS Setup process by using the “Manage Your Server” tool
